Circular gradient lights on a seamless backdrop have been my favorite as well. I do not have space in my studio to light from directly behind me, so I have the light off to the side. I have to flag using barn doors because it's coming from an angle and not directly behind me, but it creates an interesting shape other than a circle. The seamless paper also has dings, but it doesn't bother me :)
