Bare essentials

I'm not a skilled user of making digital art, but this was fun practice with an enjoyable exercise. My graphic program of choice is the free software, Gimp.

My inspiration, was a recently installed shelf which I'm still deciding what to fill with. So it's rather sparse, but fitted the theme of "space" really well. I liked the archway, which implied height and contrasted the flat shelf. A ceramic rabbit was already one of the shelf residents, so I made it my feature character.

I wasn't a fan of the artificial plant on the shelf though, so used one of my favourite climbing plants to grace the archway. Scindapsus Pictus Exotica. If only it could live permanently on my new shelf, but there's not enough light.

This was my original pencil sketch, which was a little wonky at first. However, I was able to fix that in Gimp, using the Rotate tool. It looked a little plain, but space is what the exercise was asking to be considered. So less was more, as a place to start.

After adding all the wonderful colours, I decided the bottom needed something else. So added diagonal shapes to contrast the archway and flat shelf, even more. The extra height also gives an illusion of levitating off the ground.

By keeping the design elements simple, and contemplating the space around the composition, I was able to make something that felt light and airy. Which is something new to me, and yet completely suitable for the every day!
