Although I need to practice more with the grids, I agree that they are really helpful for drawing. 

I have created the whole illustration for this project with Photoshop, using the grid in a layer with low opacity and sketching my motifs and composition in more layers over it.

For my plants I have used roses and for the secondary background small leaves.
