Art Slump Exercises

Art Slump Exercises - student project

Cut up magazine image square collage:

I had some time but not really any in-progress works to jump back into and just needed to spend a little bit of time creating. So I cut up a vintage cookbook page into squares then randomly glued them down into my sketchbooks, turning a recognizable images into an abstract collage. Then it felt a bit unfinished so I went back in with black Posca paint pen to fill the gaps, added some loose radiating lines on the outer edges and then filled the rest of the page in with black. I loved how this turned out and it felt great to create without any pressure as to how it turned out. Check out the process video over on my YouTube channel later this week.

Original Post:

I love that I can take these exercises out into the wild and incorporate them into my "create art everywhere" approach to art making. This circle limitation was created while my son had his swim lesson, working with various markers from my travel art kit and using my mixed media collage sketchbook, created during my Layers of Inspiration: Craft Your Own Mixed Media Collage Sketchbook class.

I especially enjoyed Exercise #2 and the random approach to creating. I'm planning to do more of these tomorrow but this was a very fun one using numbers, only curves (tricky with some numbers), and markers. It was a great opportunity to get our highlighters and colorful sharpies.

I also ended up pulling animals, shading, and pencil. I pushed this one a bit further, adding in fun color to represent some values on the pug.

For Exercise #4 I explored Herma Starraveld's Skillshare class Fantasy bird post cards which was a lot of fun and gave me a fun way to use my stash of decorative collage papers to create the body of my birds and then work back into them with a fineliner, colored pencils, and paint markers. I love these birds and will definitely explore this approach to creating cute animals again.
