I've decided to take this project in an abstract direction and see what I can create if I stick to a combination of organic and geometric shapes and explore cutting, separation and overlapping to create a range of compositions from the same elements.

It was fun and refreshing to start playing around with arranging paper cut-outs and then develop the compositions further in Illustrator.

My final compositions also feature a few additional elements, such as circles and lines, but the main elements are arranged based on the reference photographs I took whilst playing around with the cut-outs:
