“The Beautiful People”
I chose “The Beautiful People” by Christina Aguilera, featured on the “Burlesque” movie soundtrack. It samples “The Beautiful People” by Marylin Manson, using its strong percussion and lyrics throughout.
Someone called percussion the pulse of a song in my research on drums. A friend sent me a file of the beat he recreated on his phone. The waveform reminded me of a heart monitor, so I decided to feature it through the center of the board as a sort of grid.
I included screenshots of 1930s burlesque performer Sally Rand from a YouTube video by Gary Hopkins where she does her fan dance and goes behind a screen, showing her silhouette. Also using a photo of her bubble dance from butlexe.com.
The photo of a grand piano from limkokwokwing.net (found on Pinterest) shows the triangle of the open piano as well as the spotlight’s circle.
Using keywords: tom drum, drumaesthetic, grand piano, and vintage burlesque. I found circles and triangles throughout. I used them to help tie everything together in my addition to the board, the dancer silhouette behind the Tom drum that acts as a screen. Along with the spotlight going through it.
A collection of photos I drew on for inspiration.
