1. COURSE INTRO: going on? It is your boy, Keogh. Ryan, welcome back to another masterclass. I am super stoked that you're here today. I'm the man who is obsessed with making don't music and teaching you how to make your own. And this course you're going to learn how to make beats like Tory lanes. He has some huge smashes that right now just dropped his new album. And I'm really stoked to show this to you guys. This is a ah take that. People have been asking me four people love that kind of Toronto Drake Torey lane sound. So this is ah, track where we're gonna build it from scratch Start to finish. I've got project files for you. I would also love to see the projects that you guys make. Please post beats in your soundcloud link in the project Resource is Excuse me. In the project section of this course, I'm always down to listen to the music that you guys make. So, without further ado, if you want any of the able tin tips, tools, tactics, guide sample packs, drum kits that I have, you can find them all at Keio Ryan dot com slash resource is or the producer volt dot com. That's where I keep all my goodies. So go over there, get your drum kits, get some sample packs and, yeah, get rid of rock n roll. Grab your beverage of choice. Strap in and, ah, let's make some to Orleans type beats. Thank you so much for tuning in. Come to 11 direct. See money inside peace. 2. Course Overview: Once you want to come in through, you already know what to do. It's your boy Kia Kilo Kilo Ryan, the man who is obsessed with making Don't music and teaching you how to create your own. You already know if you've done any my class before. You know that I am a fanatic about teaching you how to make hip hop beats trap beats, but not necessarily doing exact replicas or remake. So today's course tutorial was going to be about how to make beats like Tory Lanes. He's one of my favorite artists, and in fact, he actually just released his new mixed eight. And so I wanted to walk you through one of his, um, one of the songs that I love of Tories that's called shooters. So before we get into it, um, I'm actually just looped it. So it's a much longer song, but I got the audio. It comes in around 1 30 bpm, and I looked just the end of it because that's where he lets the beat play. So this is the beat that we're gonna be making, huh? Dobie? I love the song, and some super stoked it evidence with you guys, so obviously we have a different sample. America needs trumpets, but we're going to use a lot of the same drums. BPM feels arrangement, all that sort of stuff. So if you're ready to dive in, grab the stems far along with your boy. Get your project later. I can roll on. Let's get it. 3. Drums Walkthrough: So the first thing we're gonna attack What? This is the drones. I mean, I I downloaded some cool audio samples I think would make for a dope leap Middle East. But what they don't want to talk about in particular about this B, that's super important. I can't hammer this a home enough. Is that how often as producers we overproduce? So, uh, I'm actually gonna just illustrate this point for you really quickly. I'm gonna bring this down and actually going to bring this beat way out and just bring it all the way in. Just listen to it for a second. So So what? Maybe a three minute song, 2.5 minutes on something like that, Um, in the sample. Snow Danek Catch one to shoot. It's a two bar loop. As far as the melody over and over and over and over and over the entire thing. It will drop the beat out once in a blue. But the only thing that changes is the drum doors in the booth. That's something they do to keep it interesting. Drop the beat out way. So honestly, it doesn't. I think we make things more competent I need to be. The key is especially gonna make beats with a vocalist find really pay attention to finding some school, some sort of a cool melody or cool instrument and then basing the entire track around that , especially if you look at those guys from Toronto Tory Drake party next door. A lot of those guys kind of in that with that kind of like wavy vai be Toronto sound. The melodies air dope, but they're very simple. And then it's just they build that boy boy wonder species all the time. There's build the track around the drums, so that's going to start with. First, let's figure out what he's doing in this. Let's take a listen and, ah, we start with my kicks first because I find that easiest for me. So let's jump into this not that many kicks. You want something lumpy, and then we're gonna really toy with eight awaits. So let's find a kick, a thumping kick that could be that could be going. I like that. I like that. See if you can find one of those that's going to one that's just got a lot of a lot of meat to it. Also, they If I remember, this kid has, like, a weird tales. I was gonna fade this out. There's that one. Or since we were till two clips a little bit of the end. Cool. Okay, let's just audition these kind of see how it feels. I don't even think the volumes have changed that much. I might just because, like, to be reared on my just turned it down. So maybe not quite divisive, but just a little bit just to give us a little bit of nuance. The's air just ate away. City has the end of this bar to and because the end of the song, it's not gonna look correctly. But I'm not worried about that too much right now. Wait. Sweet, Alright. Super simple with this kicks. Nothing crazy there. Nothing crazy these snares, and this is when he starts to get a little bit nutso with snares. That's a cool snare, actually might even have that snare. It has, like a sounds like almost like a try and go on the top of it. That's a good snare that we want. Maybe later that's going to, uh, let's let me listen. Is real quick. You know what? Here's what we're gonna do. I was gonna I was gonna add our own. There's gonna layer this and enter on triangle. Guess who's Bezek? I swam labels Triangle. We're tried a couple of ensnares. Uh hmm. That's that's all for now tell this snare is a lot louder. So we're gonna turn these down, mix it up a little. I was actually gonna do just to make that a little easier. We're going to have this be these other snares. We can control the sex. I don't wanna have to come in later. When we make this, it could be a pain in the butt listening for the hyattes, maybe stress of these. All right, so we're going to They were pitched down. I think some of the highs are taken off him down . Super simple. - A lot of open sounds like is paying to the right a little with the left. I think his might actually stretch the whole bar for Is gonna go tap tap? You had some more here. That's of course, Naral. So now we're going to take this. I'm actually take this one and make this snare role. Gonna lead that. Oops. - Go to me. So we got the drums down. We might actually add some more to this because I kind of want That may be a different, a little bit of a different fields. Maybe we'll add some stuff to it, but I think that that works. For now. Let's jump into our own melody. 4. Main Melody: All right, So now we jump into the melody. This is the fun part. Let's ah, see how things sound without the sample, which you just slightly off. Which I actually don't like these. Oh, actually, I think I'd like these all the same one. Let me jump in and see what we have with hope. See, I didn't mean to delete. Sorry, Tory. So I delete, you know. Okay, let's bring Tory bag down and see we're working with, because now we're going to start making the beater owns. We have kind of an idea of Tory lanes beat, and then we're going to start. Let's try this. - Here's another one. The sound is kind of cool to me. Uh uh. So, let's go like this. Let's pull this no doubt, and then let's stretch it. Is that one? What was this one? I kind of dig, um, definitely. Message doesn't have the energy the same. Keep that same energy. Um, what am I looking for? Let's see what happens to begin once we add some a little bit of delay to it, you make it a little great it out a little. - We're going to do. We're going to save this for another part of the track. We're gonna steal those double time. It no sense. I was like a since I mostly go a flute way , wages way, way. Let's add some base and more, Drum says. I think it could. I think this could have the cool kind of trap feel, so let's jump into it. 5. Bass Walkthrough: when it comes to designing this base. Are these eight awaits? At least So if we listen to Tori shooters, I think it's the he doesn't have that many. Eight awaits, just kind of lets in Iraq on the kicks. That's it. I didn't mean it. There we go. Let's come in here. And, um, it's duplicate that. Let's join that. No, that's super going to figure out what the's That's how we can use little able to in act to help us with notes you hear the birds spurs out All right, this isn't always super actor. I have a feeling section might have a really hard time trying to detect with these notes are but figure at least worth a shot. You know what this is when you might start to make things their own because And I think I have alecks like kind of a bang and lex Luger eight await that. I feel like I just want there to be because he is such a cool sample. Um, I think the guy's name is seasick. The guy who designed this, uh, they're made this beat. This initial beat is so sick, he doesn't need like a ton of tenor drums we might. Our sample isn't quite as dope asses, so we might need a little bit more. Eight. Await action. - Uh huh. All these and pick him up one. - Just just i e. I don't love it. I love it. I don't love it. I don't love it. Let's see. Maybe we can design a base that fits a little better. I'm this year. Way, way. It's a cool. It's kind of cool, but let's see. Let's see what happens. We just copy exactly what seasick does. - So I think it's definitely needs a little bit of something. So let's pause that right there we have. I actually like the Zeta waits more than I thought I would and will come back to this base . Maybe in other parts of the track. Um, again, just goes to show you how important it is having a dope sample because the one in the Tory beat like that thinking just wrapped for an hour. People will get tired of it, but ours I feel like it's starting already. You little get a little repetitive. So, um, let's put that on hold for a second and see if we can edit these drums to get a little bit more energy 6. Percussion: So now let's go back to these drums. So if we're gonna make something a bit more exciting or interesting with ease right now, it just sounds like every other trap. You know what I mean? You want make something? Maybe a little bit more interesting than this way like that? Is your finical way? - Just a little bit too. I think having one more. Hi, hat. Open hat. Um, and this would give it some a little bit more energy, maybe some sort of a chant or open hat. So I'm going to try both, Um, like a shout. Huh? Huh? Hope, Um, let's try this. Yeah, advantageously. And just like it just needs a little bit more something on these off beats. Let's try this. I think having maybe one more sort of instrumental layer I know, I know, I know. I said not to overproduce this, but our sample isn't quite as dopers crazy. So I'm gonna add some vocal chops, and then we'll arrange this out, and that'll be it. Well, the lot will come down to the arrangement for this track because that's when you could really have some fun with it. Obviously, the seasick joint is crazy because those horns are crazy. But I think we also learned a lot from this. So hold that thought. Let's jump into the next section. 7. Vocal Textures: all right, just let sleeping. If I in some of these vocals the Satori Lanes beat, he does like to use a lot of vocal texture. So even though it might not be exactly like this beat shooters, let's see if we can Tory lanes this out a little bit with some spacey vocals. So you're gonna be vocals and a way that you want to make. These is a vocal texture is you want to? Ah, first of all, at a Q waste, we can take out their low end and just we just want the highs and then reverb a bunch of delay. Um, actually, I take that back a bunch of reverb in a little bit of delay online. All right, let's do it. So these air pitched down. Ah, three semi tones. What? So we're going to take all of our vocals and actually pitch these all down by 32 because these are all G minor, so you want them to match up? All right, let's amenities way . So normally I would push this up 12 if I wanted to be a productive. But now we're going to pitch it up, I think. 15. No music expert, but I think that's right. No. Nine, My math is terrible. I'm sorry way we owe. Let's go all the way with over There it is. Let's really get Let's get crazy with the atmosphere way. That's, you know that's fuelling negative three. No way. Sometimes do is stable. Duplicate. Both of these is I'll take this one and I'll just pitch a pitch this one down E like that. I like that. I like that. So let's see. I like these vocals to let's see what happens if we get cracking. - Maybe , like it's some in some part of the verse. Maybe. - I think this is starting to finally shape up. This is where it's really the river's gonna meet the road when we start to arrange this beat. Um, so let's jump into that 8. Mixing & Mastering: when it comes to arrangement. I'm looking at this story. Lanes beat again. It's always so hard to play your beatniks. One of these, like, really dope. He's like this because it's like, Oh, really? Makes you realize how far you have to come But that's that's why we do this, that we can get better. That's the whole point. So he has just he starts with just this. Okay, so here we're gonna do Get out of here, Tory. All right, so we don't need that. See if you have anything lingering. No, we have it. Waiter. Baselitz Color. Prodi's actually before we arrange it. Um, let's makes this down. Let's get a rough mix that we can kind of see we're working with before we actually jump into arranging. So you're taking into my stuff? You know? I like zero everything first to bring it all down to zero. True. Wait, I'm not sure if I love that kick. I must always like that. Kick more now that they're loud. My trip in. Nice partisans. There's so few kicks in this track really easy. Just trying. Both are committed around there. What? Some of the high end on the weight. Uh, there it is. You want that role on the road? But we want that low rumble, but nothing too crazy. That's what A lot of this in here is that where the clicking is coming in. Yo, this things. I'm so sorry. This thing has been clicking this whole time. I apologize. My badge Oh, I'm so sorry. I was like, I feels like there's clicking in here from You know what? We also may be able to dio Let's try this. That's just the attack. A little, Yeah, I think it's just easier just to mess just to make those things a little bit shorter. - Let's listen. It is That's cool. That's all We want a little bit more distortion. Make sure makes screwing around 6.8. That kicks on stumpy, enough as it is. I don't think I need at a glue compressor. - Let's see what these notes are being a c. Um, Let's see what this triangle is right now. We're gonna tune this. I don't tune a lot of my drums, but for a beer. See? Okay, - I'm so bad with pitch. I'm sorry. Ah, if that's off, but I'm just gonna run with it for now. No, I don't have that much reverb on the snare. Like that's inside chicken breast in my house. Just a taste. Many of these vocals way you're gonna have to have a vocalist in here too. And I think that triangle that was a little too loud. All right, let's arrange this. Get you out of here. Okay, lets arranges. 9. Arranging The Beat: all right, The arrangement for this beat is really pretty simple. Um, which is a good sign. And it's just about, um, bringing things in and taking things out, and really, that's it. Um, there is not a copy. These over here is just in case. I want to move things around. Um, I like having everything joined us and just want to come back and massive it. So let's take this out. All right? So, Tory, let's just do let's do what seasick does. So we start with the sample and then we go sample with base. That's something to I need. I need to mix and was the base. I think it would do the same as you did before. Bring this in it. Eight. Excuse me. Negative eight. It's on way, way, way, way. Bring in this may bring in most of our drums. Um, you're gonna have these vocals here yet? Obviously. And we're not gonna have the base in there. And I like that for that second kick more. Samantha needs that yet. It's a system Natori Boy, I'm trying to catch me. Where to shoot Snow Danek. Cash wanted to shoot us normal place short is in over. Boy, I'm trying to catch me. Where to shoot snow down. What is it? Snow Danek. Cash wanted to shoot us. Normal. Short is in over. I want to do is God. Let's go like this. So sorry. I gotta get it all my shoe to stop I want to do is God trapping with shores. So I can So we're going to do now is when duplicate everything out like we did. Except this time, Uh, in this first bar, we're going to take out the open hats. We're gonna add these open hats in here. I came and I just like I can waiting. Got I came spot. Tell me you fucking back. Okay, so I think we just keep it going. You should keep it. Keep moving, keep moving. And then And then we come back to the hook and this is when we would, because we aren't Tory Lanes. Thank story for the help. Um, this is when Will bringing the vocals? Some of the vocal chops. So maybe we add the's the first vocal traps. Cool. No way. - Way like Justin impact arises. That's just cause that's the way role, But way. Ooh, I like that. I like that. A lot says we're gonna do. We're gonna go. And where's that drum rules narrow. There's that this way and these other open. And here's where we're going to delete everything like that. She was gonna drop everything. Okay? Actually, we're gonna have these vocals. They're gonna be the hook vocals. And he's just gonna be verse vocals Kick out for a little bit. - Eyes , actually, where I'm going to photo filters because I like to play with arrangement a little bit. - I was gonna add this show in the second part of this hook. Just add a little bit of character to it. Gonna have this hook extend out. Keep this is a short beat and make a little altro on call today. But that is how you make a Tory Lanes type of trap beat using his shooters song and ah, as inspiration. Hope that that was fun. Hope that you learned a little something. You know where it is.
