About This Class

This class will introduce you to the basics of SketchUp - simple 3D modeling program, that is used by designers and architects. 

A free version of SketchUp Make, or a trial version of SketchUp can be downloaded from one of the links below:

You will model a simple 3D space that consists of the following objects: walls, floor / ceiling, window & door openings, window frame, door. You will then add materials to the walls, add furniture items to your model, (furniture items are downloaded from a free online database of sketchup models). You will learn to add a camera view & export your final 3d model into an image file.

1. Intro - SketchUp: Hi, My name is Layla. I have a background in interior design, and I have been teaching three D and other design related programs for a few years now. So I finally decided to create this online class to introduce you to the basics of three D modeling and sketches. You will learn how to grade walls, how to build a very simple window and a door, how to apply basic materials and download furniture. And whether or not you're deciding to pursue a career into your design, I think this class will be really helpful if you decide to remodel your room or just to add to the set of skills that you already have. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the class and let me know if you have any questions. Thank you. 2. Start the Program & Set the Template: So once we around the program, we can just go to templates here, select simple template. Feed in inches first. If you decide to work and millimeters or meters, you can select a different template. But for now, we'll stick with this one and then just say, start using sketch up. 3. Navigation Tools: Orbit, Pan & Zoom: Okay, so here we are in our three d space. That's where all the action will be happening from no one. This graphic is here just for scale. We can just select it and hit delete for now, a little bit about navigation. So you have navigation icons here. This guy is an orbit tools, or you can orbit in this space. This is a pan tools, or you can move left to right up and down. This is a zoom tool zooming in and out. Um, simultaneously. You can use these tools without clicking on the icons. You can just use your mouse key. So for the orbit to you can just press your scroll wheel on the mouse and just start moving left and right for the panto. You will need to press the scroll will hold shift on your keypad, and that's how you convulse a band without clicking the actual icon. And for the zoom tool, you can just zoom in and out in the space, and that's gonna be your zoom tool. So that's a quick overview of navigation tools, and we are ready to go forward 4. Create the Walls: Rectangle & Push / Pull: to make working and sketch up easier. Let's activate a large tool set, so go to view tool bars and click. Check the box next to the large tool set just an expanded version off the toolbar on the top. From here, let's take a rectangle tool that will be our base for the walls, so just click with the rectangle toe click on the intersection of the axis. Start moving your mouth to the right and start typing. 10 Apostrophe coma, 20 apostrophe enter and if you notice in the bottom right hand corner. That's where you get those two parameters. And this way you created a rectangle 10 feet by 20 feet. Again, you don't have to click there. You can just start typing on your keypad from here. Less. Activate the push pull tool. Click on the surface of the rectangles. Start moving your cursor up. Type 10 feet or 10 apostrophe Enter and from here, let's take the offset tool is this guy. Click on the top rectangle off this object. Start moving your cursor so you see the second frame than type five injure and we're making the walls five inches thick. Then take the push. Pull chul again. Click on the chop surface. Start moving your, um, rectangle down to the point where you see own face sign and a dotted service. And once you see it, just click there this way you pretty much created a cat cut out off your, um, original three D object. So this is a very basic shell, a core for our wolves and women go from here. 5. Group the Object, Add Slabs, Copy Objects: Okay, So what we want to do from here is to group this object. We can select this object by either triple clicking on either off the sites or you can just click, hold and drag your amounts to create Ah, window around this object. Once this is done and you can tell the the edges became blue, that means of the object is collected. You can right click and say, Make group. This is an important step because we'll be creating more objects on top of this object, and we don't want the geometry to be merged. I'll explain a little later what ISS was that means. But for now, just create another rectangle on top off this, um, object. And this time you don't have to enter the parameters. Just click in one corner, dry across click and another corner. If so, by default, your pencil should snap to one of the points. But if it doesn't happen, just zoom in and then you'll be able to snap. Once you created this new rectangle, take our No. One push Balto click push up and type 10 enter. So we're just making a 10 INGE like slab triple quick on the slab, right click make group, then take the move tool. Click on the top quarter off this slap. After clicking, you should click or hit control on your keypad. Once you hit control, move. Tool becomes a copy, too, and with that being said, you can just place the second copy under our rules. So this way we just created these two objects Easter slabs as a floor and a ceiling, and what we can do from here is we can select the top one rightly on it, say, hide, and then we'll be able to access our room. If we need to bring the top slab back. We can go to edit on hide, last or all, and then this will be brought back. But for now, we want to keep it hidden. 6. Create Window & Door Openings: Okay, so now we're just going to create a window, and a door opening will start by double clicking on this object with a select tool and then taking the rectangle toe snapping to the midpoint. You will see a green snap, which means that's a midpoint. Snap so quick there and start dragging the rectangle up. Be careful so that it remains on the surface of the wall and then start typing eight feet comma, three feet enter. Then take the push pull tool point to the surface of the rectangle, push it back to the point where it says offset limited or own face and then click there to create an opening. From here, we'll do approximately the same thing for the windows, except will create a couple of additional lines. So take a pencil tool or a line to, and then create a line from the midpoint of one vertical on the left to the midpoint of another vertical on their right. It will snap to the mid points automatically. Let's do the same thing for the horizontal lines. Sometimes when you start moving the line down, it can go sideways. So to prevent that you can hit the upper arrow key on your keypad and that will look the line or in the vertical direction. So now let's just select thes Electoral and click on the line on the top. We'll copy this line. Select the move tool hit control to make it into a copy to click on the point of this line and start dragging it down than type two feet. Enter and then we'll copy the bottom line with a reference to the top line. So so, like the bottom one. Click the move to hit the point on the top line, hit control and then move it down, clicking the intersection off those lines. So we just copied with the reference point and the less Take theme pencil or lyinto again and draw in additional line from 8.2 midpoint. Great. So from here, a listing its electoral and double click on the rectangle on the top. Hold shift and double click on the rectangle in the bottom, and we'll just copy these two to the side. So take the move toe klik in the corner, had control and then place the second copy, um, on the side. Great. So take the razor tool and just you raise the lines that would no longer need. I will just leave these two big rectangles like that. Awesome. Great. So from here, we just need to create frames for our windows. So let's take the offset toe, um, creative frame and type three for three inches with the same officer tool. You can double Blake on the adjacent rectangle and that will copy the same frame. You don't have to re enter the correct from here. Let's take the push, pull tool and just, you know, select the frame for a steak that push brutal and pours that frame one inch out. I just double click with the same push Balto on the adjacent frame. Now let's push thes rectangles back to create opening. Sometimes you have to be careful when pushing it back doesn't isn't always go right, and you just need to be aware where is going. Yeah, that's pretty much it. So we created our window openings and we can go from here. Thank you. 7. Add a Door & Add Materials: so we just need to add a door here, which is a pretty simple thing to do. We just take a rectangle toe, draw a rectangle here, take a push pull tool, and it's easier for me to do it from this side. So I orbited to see the other side and pushed the door out, or about two inches than double triple click on the door, right click Make group. So always, always remember to make groups out of your objects. The reason why we're doing that is because let me explain or let me demonstrate this year, so resemble these two objects are grouped, right? And if I create a copy of this object and just places them side by side, you're still groups. I can move things around, pull this object, separate them blah, blah, blah. But let's say I copied this one. I right click on it and I say Explode, which pretty much on groups? Theology? No, Let's say I selected it and I copied it in place in side by side with the other one, and now that I want to move it out Oops, see what happens. So make sure to always group your objects, especially if you're placing copies on top of one another. Otherwise, it will be really hard to go back to your original. So here we are with our door. That was pretty simple. Now let's apply some basic materials to our walls, windows and doors. To do that, we need to address our default tray on the right. In case you don't have it, you need to go to a window default tray and say, Show trade. Now you will need to open the materials tab and here you have some basic materials. If you click, somebody folded said to glass and mirrors, in my case. But, for example, whose go click there and select colors, you have some pretty basic colors here. Um, you have some patterns. If you want to play with those, you have, um, would you have concrete things like that? So for now, just select. Let's say, polished concrete material, and I apply that will apply that to my wall. So to apply that you just need to click on the sample of the material and with a paint bucket till you just need to paint the now because we grouped our walls Once you apply this material to the walls, every wall gets the same with you. If, for example, you need this specific will to be in to have another mature, you need to double quick on this group. Select the surface, go to let's say, colors or just select another material. Select the color that you like, and then pain that will with that specific color. And then always remember to exit the group by clicking outside off the group. Um, you can change materials as many chaps as you want, and then, um so, yeah, that's pretty much it same thing for the floor. So, for example, if you need to have the Florida and other material, let's go to, Let's say, would select Cem basic wood and apply that to the floor. But it honestly can be anything else. I would apply the same concrete material to it. Um, So, for example, if you need to pick material from the scene, you can do that by selecting the pain bucket toe holding cult, and this way your pain back. It becomes an eyedropper tool, and when I point the eyedropper or click with the eyedropper, my wolves for example, it just selects the material that is applied to the bulls, and it's easier this way if you need to use the same material for the floor for the walls for something else, you can just pick them the material with the eyedropper and then use that material. I will use a different color for the door and the windows all being the door with a gray, um, for the window. Because I made it a part of the world group. I will need to double click to open the group. Select. Let's say this surface and pains that with a different color. I can also just draw a rectangle or square, and I'll do it from the back side of my, um, object. And then I can select thes two squares. Go to glass and mirrors, select translucent glass blue and just paint those guys in with glass material. Yeah, that's basic. So if a blank materials to your option 8. Add Furniture Items: Okay, so right now we'll just download a couple of furniture items to our model. Let's click on this little icon that's called three D Warehouse, which will connect you to an online database with lots of different three D models and in the search box. Just start typing lounge chair. And if you want the specific one that I'm using, just feel free to, um, type the name. Otherwise, just select mature you prefer. And then, you know, click on the model that you like, say, download, and I'll ask you, if you want to load it directly into your sketch model, you will say yes. And then it will probably take some time while it's downloading. And once it's ready, you could just place it in your model. After your place said, you will probably want to rotate this model so we will select the rotate tool, which is this guy next to the move tool. And then we will click with this blue circle on the ground. Click once and then move your cursor a little out click again to specify the rotation arm, and then you can just start Rudiger rotating or moving your cursor and just type of the angle off the rotation. 45 for example. Enter and noticed that in the right hand corner you we'll see this angle. But you don't have to manually click there. So from here you can take the move tool again and just move your item to the left to the right. Depends on where it was placed originally. Um, sometimes went moving objects. You will, you know, you can go sideways. And you know, sometimes off chair can be floating. The trick to that is either, you know, point directly to the bottom of the chair. Snap to the leg and that's giving you more control. Or you can use one of the arrow keys on your keypad to lock the direction. So, for example, if I hit the left arrow key, I will be looking my movement on the green access. If I hit the right arrow key, the direction of the movement will be locked on the red access Upper arrow key is the blue access, etcetera, etcetera. So with these tools, with this little tricks, you will be able to have more control over the movement off your chair. Great. So from here we will pretty much add a couple of other models. I will give you links to those. But I'm pretty sure Ikan dude yourself and yes, thank you. And we will continue from here. 9. Create a Camera View & Scenes: wait. So now that we have these furniture items here and let's go ahead and create a camera view , just click on the position camera toe orbit. So you see this corner of the room. Click in the quarter, hold and drag across to the opposite quarter and then release. This will look a little weird, as if you're sitting on the floor as because they I hide is set to zero. So let's just change that to three foot six hit Enter. Great. So once we created this perspective, you let's go to edit on hide all and that will bring our ceiling back. And then let's go to window default tray and make sure that the scene stab is active. If it's not, just check the box next to it and then go to scenes tab here. Click on the plus sign that will create Scene one, and I'll explain how that works. Two. Demonstrated. Let's hit zoom extents and or all zoom out a little bit. Take these electoral, select the ceiling right click, hide again and then click on the plus side. Integrated Seen number two. So seen. Juan has the ceiling on perspective. You seem to has a sealing off, um axle or top you. You can create as many scenes as you want each time you create a scene, it will remember the a position you were in while creating a scene so you can rename the scenes if you like. You can. Great Blake. It's a rename or just change the name up there. Just saying That's a perspective. Um, you can say top you something that makes sense to you. And then let's go back to see Number one. Let's click on the Zoom Tool instead of manually zooming out notice that the field of view here is set to 40. So if we change that to, let's say, 50 we can zoom out without actually zooming out or just changed. You know the amount of things we see in this. Let's change those back to 45 and then right click on the scene and say update. So whenever you make any changes to the same zooming in or out, you want to right click and say update. Otherwise, the scene will just keep the last update that you made cool. So now let's add little light door room. So go to shadows here, click on this little icon to show the shadows, and then I already adjusted the location of the sun. But if you don't see this light in your room, you can play with the time and date for amateurs. There will pretty much of bringing the sunlight into your room. And then once you're happy with that, remember to right click on your C Number one and say update, quote were good, so we just have a couple of things left and then we'll be done. 10. Wrapping Up: Export Into an Image File, Save: So it might be that after you created this scene, you will want to save this as an image file. And instead of just going print screen, you can go to file export to D graphic, select JPEG or pdf PNG if you like, but I'll stick to Jay Peak for now. Go to options if you want a bigger resolution, so you know by default it will say Use view size. But you can uncheck this box and journalists see 2400. But whatever it is here and say OK, picker folder export. Yes, and that will save it as an image file. Additionally, you can look at the Styles menu. Here you have some catch styles that you can select. Rome. If you want a different look for your model, feel free to explore those or assorted styles that were just fun to play with. So if you want to, you can experiment with those. If you want to go back to your original style, you can click on this home I can and just scroll down and select. Um, I have a bunch great her scroll down to the simple style, and that's gonna be your original style. That's pretty much it.
