1. Introduction: Hello, It's Thomas George. And welcome to this course, for this course is all about beat making in ableto live night. This course is for anyone who wants to jump in and start making their own beach straight away. You're going to be looking at a drum rat, creating from parts base parts on some parts. So if you want to make some beats, make sure you enrolled in this course. 2. What you are Going to Learn: Okay, Now let's have a look. Actually, arranging this drum beats one thing making a drumbeat. But you want an arrangement? You're saying you want your lesson to feel something. You want your listener to not get too bored. So really, the best way to do this is through arrangement. The easiest wasted this and able to life is to just get these click views up here and literally just duplicate them, copy them and just change certain parts and each one. I like to color them differently. Just so in there, that's a different section. So I've got this beat that we made before. Use that. Be a gambit. Change it slightly. So I'm gonna hold down, drag it down, right click and choose a different color. Now I'm gonna actually change with a kick. Promise. Change the kick from now and again. I'm also gonna change where the snare is on the change of snares from 2 to 4. Because previously there were just on free. Okay, so let's hear this back now. Different five Compact. So it's a similar kind of thing, but really have just changed it round a little bit with the same kind of thing again. Hold on. Old Dragon dying Let's choose a different color And then let's just double click on this on this time in the change the hats. I'm not gonna get rid of the hats on this one. So you all you can do just click on the side and just hit backspace or delete. And now we don't have any hats with copy the one from before. Over. Hold down, bolts. If you play this, the hats about will appear again getting a better arrangement going. But you're gonna copy over the top one again. Hold down old. And now I'm going to get rid of all of them apart from Shaka on the kick and I'm gonna hold out all track this over. That's killer, that one from before, Slightly different and colorless again, slightly different. And then I'm just going to add in some snazzy Okay, the change, the velocity of this one. Press beads. Get rid of the pencil on literally just drag it down. So it's not as loud. That's here this way. Getting a bit of the arrangement now she's really what we want when we creating beats, we just don't want the same thing over and over again. Let's just play through a few of these seeking here. Actual arrangements change the last one. Just move this nest to four. Shane's it slightly the color. There we go. Just arrange the drums. And next we're gonna look adding a bass part. 3. The Drums: Okay, so let's start off with the kick drum. The best way to do this is to use a drum rack. So you go to instruments up here and choose drum rack. And here we can actually just drag in our own samples. So we look at the bottom left down here. This is the drum, right? This allows us to actually drag in our own sample. Just one of my favorite things that able to live this drum rack. So now we need to find some samples. If you have your own samples, you can drag them in here. You can see on the left of loaded different sample packs that I like to use. Or we can use some of the samples that actually come with ableto life. I think we should use the ones that come have able to live, just in case you don't have any of thes samples. Okay, so let's just type in at the top here. We can just type and kick on. Then we'll have a low, different kicks to choose from. Great thing about able to as well. If you just scroll down with your keyboard, it was just play the samples, which I think is fantastic. Okay, this vinyl one that shoes this or if there is literally just drag it down I like to have the kick on C one. It's just scroll up. We can use the side panel here and find where see Oneness. And then all we literally do is just drag it down and I will have this here appear. This gives us a few different options we can do with the kick if you've been using ableto for exactly what I'm on about. But I just go through this just in case someone's news ableto live, we can add a filter. We can change the resonance which shows the frequency can change the volume transposition so you can make the kick higher or lower, fade in, fade out. We can actually change the wave position. So if we don't want it coming in straight away, we can choose where we want in the way of tohave it just with these orange arrows. So let's actually just double click on the session view here, and this will open a MIDI role editor hit be for the pencil, then all I'm doing is just type it in some information. Okay, there we go. Just hit play. You can change the tempo at the top. I'm gonna choose. Ah, trees 1 40 All we have to do is just drag a double click. American type M on 14 is going quite fast. Okay, on the change this kick from Because the sign of the kick is very important. You can actually add on a filter, take out some of the highest, and then I'm gonna change where it starts. Okay? Now, just change the trump's position here. Just dying free semi tones. Okay. It's the same with the snare. Pretty much. You can just go up to the top here. Just type in snap. Okay. I'm going to use this one dragging on today. I like to have snout in the data. Just what I'm used to from finger German. And then the great thing about drum rack is adds a snare or adds the instrument you added on top. So now first, you think that's a bit loudly change of a lost here. We just move out the way. So change of velocity with the pencil here. Older, that is, just add in some stress. Have to quick or unclean to add and delete Andi. Yeah. So let's just go back to the snap. We click on a drone, Mac, here, just click. The one want to change? Then we can actually go in and change some of this. So on the volume. A bit quieter, personally. Think it's a bit too loud. I'm gonna transpose up to semi terms. Let's hear this. Free seven signs. Okay. Okay. Other filter. Okay. Let that. This is kind of the basics of how you make a beat in able to life. So now let's add some high hats. So let's just type in hats, see what we get. You have lips as well. So what we can do is just grab this loop and drag an f sharp on. We can actually pick and choose what we want to use in the loop. We don't have to use the whole lots. We hit this play button down here, we'll play the whole look. I just want to use part of it. So let's just gay fruit and hit play. Good. Find. Find a high hat to use. Here. Use this one became. What we can do is actually hold on old Jew pickets over I like toe have on G sharp as well . And click on this and choose a different high hats. Okay, so let's try this one here. Lets see what this sounds like. Maybe not. We can zoom in with the cursor. Okay, let's put this in the right place. Okay, Great. So now we've got two different sounding high hats, this one and this one from a little bit confused Pretty much any looter drag a high hat from or snare. You can't really copyrights NASA and or a high hat to be careful with copper. Obviously, that one steal anyone's music, but little things like bits of percussion. It's absolutely fine. Okay, so let's go into the piano editor again. And now let's just draw in the hi hats really up to you what you want to draw in. But it does involve a lot of listening to other people's songs and just realizing what's going on and feel and stuff and playing in. Or you can just use your fingers and finger drum easy. Want to start with is literally just yeah, every 16th notes for the hi hats. If you want to add a bit of a trap pattern. We can roll this as well. One week we can do that is we can actually adding arpeggio hater onto the high hat. Okay, so let's just copy this one over to a hold down bolts. And then all we have to do is find a midi effect. Get rid of the rights in the top on Dragon Arpeggio. Later the book, Click on this and then you'll notice. Here we have the up educator. Let's change the rate too. 24th but more interesting. And then if we add on here, you notice it will play this sound. Okay, play this arpeggio. Now we could play this beat. It will play the arpeggio hated Hi, Hat the end. Let's hear this. You can add a few more one. Let's try this one there we could add Say another one. We could try a different arpeggio. So let's go back on and just hold down bolts and drag this over. All we have to do is just change this to say 37 40 40 eights. That would be quite interesting. Click on this again and then we can add this one Let's hear this back. We could just go through and change this around. Okay, let's hear this beat now. Or if there's hit play on the clip, it's a bit too much at the end. I'm gonna have no high hat. There can always add more stuff on the drummer. A really deal of the drum rackets, a fantastic feature in able to life. So let's actually go on to samples again. And let's try. Let's just go through and see what we've got. Let's add something a bit more interesting. Oh, okay. Let's use this going to put this on detail on the go through and just find a little clip here that I like Maybe here. Like that shaker. That sounds cool. I'm just gonna sample this shaker. That's finally a friend and drag it back. Okay, Now, I've just got this shaker. You can change the pitch down slightly. Okay, Great. Now we've gotta shake a sample them double click on PR role editor, and now you can just insert Shaker. It's a good idea to make a lot of space in the beat. You don't want too much going on at the same time. So if there's a role going on. I haven't really at the Shaker there. That's here. That's so the space for pretty much every instrument to be heard, maybe get rid of this one. But that there So the kick plays the Shakers not playing in this now plays the Shakers, not playing when the role in the high hat is there. The shake is not playing just so there's more space for each instrument to be heard. We can even do the same with Shaker so we can even add on an arpeggio later for the shaker . So all we have to do just hold down bolts drug over. It lets you see shop and then go on to many effects arpeggio data and Iraq this over. Okay, so let's just click on this. Change the rate too. 24th. What? Sounded interesting on then changed a couple of these shakers to a different note. Okay, let's try this way we get a rhythm going now. One thing we can do as well is actually go back to the from wreck. Has she changed the gate? Change the swing as well. So that swing this one. Okay, great. So this is basically the fundamentals of making beats in able to live, just making the drumbeat to start up with. And next, we're going to be looking actually arranging the drumbeats and then adding arrangements at the base on a symptom the pad. 4. Arranging the Drums: Okay, Now let's have a look. 5. Bass Part: Okay, So previously you created drumbeat on we arrange the drums. Now let's actually make a bass part. So let's get a media clip here, and that's drag on a synthesizer. Let's go on to instruments that's choose unlock. And for now, we just use one of the presets. I do recommend going for him working out how synthesis works. But for now, let's just use a preset Let's choose base on the great thing about ableto live, same as the samples we can just collect and go through. As long as this little headphone button here is selected on is Blue, you can just go for and scroll through with your, uh, yeah, the bottom arrow, and you can just scroll through these different sounds. Oh, let's try this one than I always do is drag it over to the Midi instrument on. What I like to do is actually just copy over the drum part and Iraq this over. So if a double click here this way, we get to see the river more. What's going on? Obviously, it's not the right notes, but we can see the river. You can see what's going on, and I know you. Now the bottom one is the kick. There's a few things you can do with the base. You can even make space so the kid can be heard. We can lock in with the kick. This instance I want to make space. The kit can be heard. So hit bay for the pencil tool on going to start with. Make sure the headphone but in the selected here so you can hear what we don't on. But you're gonna select all by commanded a moving a productive OK, and now the about it below a conducive for the base. We're going to use that C minor. I don't want to play with a kick is so let's try this river here. Don, say the skills to be flat or the shop. I'm just using this rhythm. Okay. And then get rid of the pencil Tool bay. Okay. Also, remember to save your project. Just a little side note, because you do want to do this, okay? And I'm just gonna hear delete them and play this back. Obviously, I have left a note there. That's one thing you need to look out for way. Change the notes around, Uh huh? Of course we don't have to stick to this. Can change around just a really, really simple bait on a simple base part. Not only the same kind of thing with the everyone that you just look at this and analyzed at this time. Remember where the kicks are. So you can do is do the same kind of thing and just direct this over. Andi, just look in the base with the drums now. Okay, So let's have a look at this Command a select all. We'll make sure you click on the piano roll. It is the first commanded, slept all and then shifted to go productive. And now the kick drums here. So this similar kind of thing kick from appears there. So this time I'm gonna actually put the base there and move it around So that space for the kick to be heard because they want the basil lock in too much. I want there to be space in this instance. Okay, let's go to the sharp. What? You flat Then I'm gonna dio vivir role. Um okay, slightly off key, but I think this is sound good. Be to get out of the hospital and then just, uh um became that that's here, This back. So now we've got the base on and the drums should have space for life way. Always go into the symptoms well and actually just change some of the things that way. The way the residents, this kind of thing. I think this isn't really a course on synthesis. This just more about making a beat in the process of beat making. Okay, so that's basically the drums. And the bass would go through the of ones, but pretty much just got it sorted from before. So that's the same kick from infamous the second ones who just sees that base again. So this is same kick from rivers. The second ones we use that bass, part GAM, this one. Same is the 1st 1 This one's the same as the 1st 1 the last one, same as the 1st 1 so basically arranged the drums in the base. Now let's just have a listen to this and hopefully should be space for all the drums and the bass to be heard. A lot of it is just about creating space, so it's not too muddy. You can actually hear what's going on. Wait. That's kind of the basics off drums on the base for creating beats and able to live. Next, We're gonna look at creating some pads or some keys. Yeah. I hope you find this video useful so far. 6. Keys: right. So let's add on some keys now. Similar kind of thing to the base that's going instruments less issues a preset on. Let's choose synth keys. Theo Stride piano in case E. Thats one organ six in That sounds nice. You realize now we don't actually have any more many instruments, so we have to correct Numidian treatment, create and set management. We can drag it where you want it and just drag this over. Of course, we can use audio clips as well, but for this, but just gonna be using MIDI. Okay, let's actually just drag over the base clip. That's how I like to do stuff. So you actually see where stuff is? Okay, so now let's actually build on some cause from here. So the bass note is a C says a lot. We can do here, but we carry on looking through here, you'll notice that in the key off seem minor. So we need to know that this court is a C minor court. Okay, so let's build on a chord here, so we're gonna go productive. Make sure this headphone button here is selected, and then way to play the flat here that is the third of this course. Even. Just leave this. And if we want and then let's add on another one here, you can see there's there any flat or D sharp G and a flat. So this could still be a C with 1/7 or could be a never called Let's Try and never court. We're gonna be Oh, Jane. Also, first court, we're gonna meet the seat, so sounds of its smooth. And now let's get rid of these bass notes and from the start A we're gonna put this open up . So command day. Oh, okay. So let's actually go into the simple and just change a few things around here, so it's a little bit loud. High frequency and drop this a bit on. Let's hear this back. I'm just gonna solo this with the S button change shape to our state is on here so we can go through and change. The oscillators have been based on this. We have one independent. I prefer Slater one personally. Let's try a square wife e. I think that sounds good. Let's leave us. It is okay, Way recalled. Because the same all the way through so you can literally just copy this over wave arrangement here. We don't have to have the course playing the whole time. Let's just take finish on this court case. That's basically how you can write some courts. You will need to know your music fairy, but it's about just kind of locking in and release God's saying Good you got used to here. It's not all about fear. It's about using your eras. Well, next we're gonna look at, actually, I don't on the synth parts. 7. Synth: Okay, so this is kind of the fundamentals of creating a beat or beats in able to live a lot of it is just about arrangement and create something that it listens would like to listen to so many different dramas. You can use this. Just one example on one technique are used to create beats. Another thing we could do is great and melody. So this could be a vocalist. It could be a real life investment like a saxophone. Or it could be a synth pop. Let's just go in and create a SIM part. Now one thing I like to do is to actually duplicate the courts. So hit command in D. This will duplicate make a copy and now we can't should go in and create a melody part. I wouldn't worry too much about the Simpson at the moment. Let's just concentrate on the notes. So if we double click on this mini information, we will have the MIDI notes here on because you see the notes. So really, the melody we do want notes from the court. Just go for you. Make sure this headphone icon is switched on here. Then we can write in a melody here. So in C minor, Germany would use accords from the notes on the court. But you can use a few passing notes. It doesn't necessarily have to be the same. One thing to do is just keep it simple. So then we spot to kind of the same chord. So any flat. So we just changed one note. We just change this note here, keep the pattern. Gavin, if the shop change Teoh a shop. Okay, that's here. This thing e always make it longer as well. Doesn't have to be the same left every single time, so you can always drag it out and make this longer. So how did you copy all this? All down old rack this over. So remember they ever called was a seaside. Just change this note to say. Then add on. Okay, This kind of melody just fits around the notes in the court. A productive, so command a shift. No, Let's go into the organ there and just change some of these dreamy sounding judgment. Great for pads, but not so good for lead. So we can always go into instruments on Simpson leads or Simpson keys just try and find something a bit more suitable for a lead instrument, maybe even guitar and plucked. Try this one way With C, this long notes sounds a bit boring, so I always go in just to Iraq this over. Remember, this goes back to the sea. Wait, for example, we could add a delay. We could change the notes around this. Just a quick example of melody writing. There's a lot more we can do in able to live. So let's go to order effects on. Let's add on a simple delay just directly over to this. I always find this instrument as well. Just make it a bit more interesting. This lows, more stuff we can do. We can have an arpeggio later onto the pad as well. So if we go to many effects on shoes, arpeggio weakened Iraklis onto the organ. I want arpeggios, does plays the notes separately in the court. So let's listen to this. There's different effects. We can choose here for hard to allow this stuff going on. So if you just say below the organ playing, you can hats playing one that the tithe hard to hear because of all that brat the same time. It does make it sound a little bit more interesting than previously course. If we add on our pejeta, too a signed with a lot less kind of release it be much more punchy. Let's just hit us just a little less will change way, always go through and choose different instruments. For example, this pluck Sarah and it might not be the most suitable. You always go in and change in just drag over infringement. This is just a really simple way of, actually, he created a beat or beats and able to life. We can change the arrangement now. The organ doesn't always have to be playing the same time. The melody doesn't just move stuff around, delete certain stuff, and then all we have to do is hit stop, and they want to record this to the arrangement or we have to do is hit the record button hit play, make sure all clips of stop starts on. Then we can make a bit of an arrangement as well. So in the start off, actually, just with a the base bar and then we're gonna add on if you ever actually that starts off with this. Welcome parts. Never gonna add on the arrangements a case on the stairs hit record and then just use these arrows on the right. You can just record in the arrangement. - Okay , so I just made a bit of the arrangement there. I just played through. I didn't actually stick this all the way through A changed a few things around the plate, and that's a good way they're able to live. You could make more of a live feeling performance on when you get a bit more controllers and use have external module is you can make it sound even more exciting. So now if we go to the arrangement view by hit in the tablets and appear and we had a small orange button here because you go through and we can edit the arrangement view. But this is basically how we make beats or how I make beats in ableto life is really about the session views this view here, creating clips, creating different parts, moving stuff around, making kind of intra cuts, arrangements. And this weighs a bit more interesting than just the same thing over and over again because you want to really take a listener on the journey and not just getting to listen to the same thing over and over again. Of course, you will need repetition in your music in any kind of music. At the same time, you want to put a little parts and as well make it bit more interested. This is just a quick crash course into creating beats and able to life. Remember, Now we're in the session view. We can do even more. We can change the Haram can drag stuff about. We can automate this. So thank you again for watching this video. I hope you found it useful.
