1. Matting with Basic tools Intro: Hello. My name is James. I'm a portrait photographer I own and operate a small portrait studio. And welcome to my class on matting with basic tools. This class is for beginners. Andi, No. Show you what tools you need, how to use them safely to get the best results. When matting your artwork or photographs, let's get started. 2. Tools you will need: Okay, here we out over my cutting table. I have my outdoors mark Qatar with a 45 degree car. Basically, what you do is you just put your mat underneath this. This sets the distance from the edge on. Then the card itself raids along the edge and makes the cut. If you're fortunate enough to have one of these, that's fantastic. If you don't have one reads, then you will need a separate 45 degree cutter. Okay, so you need a 45 degree car, and if you don't have one of the cutting boards, you'll need a metal roof. This one has ah, rubber, almost like a rubber gasket, and when it's placed on the mat and threat downward pressure is applied, it doesn't slate of a okay. If you're not using one of the mat boards, you will need something to place under your kata. A sacrificial Matt. So as you can see, even that's pressed done. It doesn't move okay, on the car will right along the edge like that. Something else you need is you will need 1/9 nation shop, ideally with a new bleeding. It there's a sharp blade will allow you to cut him up with the applying too much downward pressure slip and cut yourself. So for safety reasons on a sharp knife, you will also need Paris ISMs for cutting the tape to make the tea. Ng's the tape itself. And if you don't have the metal rule and just have a regular straight edge, then you need a measuring tape, something that is either centimeters or inches, depending on what you want. A calculator. I probably more comfortable in Sandomir, so will be used in centimeters today. If you're not that Greek calculations on a little calcula, let's get started making them up. 3. Using the 45 Deg Cutter: okay. It's important you understand how the 45 degree car works. So you have your street edge on. Do you have your Qatar? So what you do is this lane on this Qatar is where the knife will in tow on the lane here, Onda again will stop on not laying there. So that's the gate lane. Sometimes it's on the other side. Different cultures have different marks. This one hasn't there. So you place the Qatar just in the lane just before the lane so that when you depressed the cutter, it comes forward and is in lane with that lane there. So just behind the lane and stay out the cutter, Andi and one so behind Alain entailed the cutter in one smooth action forward stuff on their d'Alene raised a cutter. That's how it works. No, you will your cuddling. So again you could end like that. You take your cutter, please it just behind the lane and sail to end. And Matt, and in a smooth movement, push it forward until you get to the other lane and then raised the cutter. That's how you do it. You would then Tanyon Matt on do the same with the other one. So again behind the lane, Fisher. And until that becomes so it's on the lane and then Kush. Nice, smooth movement until you get to the next lane. And that would give you. And there you go. There you have your nice car, urinates corner your mom quite easy. 4. Selecting a mat colour: Okay, here we are, over the cutting table, and this is the Matt I've selected. The color of the matter I've selected for my artwork is contrast E, but not too often Ball crazy color. So I like generally me personally. Alley muted colors. So this suits me perfectly. So this is what I'm going to make my my mouth from. Generally a good idea to select the color that's in the image and make the map from that or stick to a neutral color like black wait cream. Agree that kind of color. Okay, so let's Marco the the mat, and we'll get started. 5. Cutting your mat: Okay, so let's call them the size of the man. I want to put an a frame that's 40 centimeters by 50 centimeters. So I have to cut a piece of mat that's 40 by 50. You always cut on the riverside off the mat on this side here with text is the factory edge , so that will be your straight edge. So what we'll do is we'll just check to make sure that this is for a Senate Meals. I'm gonna use my mel room. Andi, fortunately for me is 41 centimeters, so that's perfect. I can cut the absolute minimum would and save as much as possible for other months. So I'm gonna need today. I'm gonna be using a pen to Marco. Normally, I would use a pencil, but for it to be easier for you to see, then we will Marco 40 which is there. And then we'll market for two here, which is there. Make us many measurements is unique to get the full length you need. So there's my 40 there. I will just joining up these lanes scored Elaine and then I will measure 50 cent. Amir's 50 centimeters is here on the side. 50 centimeters is here. Obviously, you will cut this to the size of the frame. Remember to cut to the inside size of the frame because this is going to go inside. Okay. Just for your route to the site. No, I'm not going to use the mark board. Matt Cutter, to do this. I'm simply going to use this tree edge because I want to cut it at 90 degrees. So I will please my street edge on the lane. Crestone firmly and cut. Not too much. Then we're pressure because you don't want to slip, and it's back to do it in two or three passes like that, I plan to try and cut it with just a single pass. What you don't want to do is you don't want to slept. That could end very badly. So downward pressure, a nice cup. That's one two parties. That should be a perfect. So for this, a extra to the side on this is what we're going to be using. So now all we need to do is Marco Calculate what needs to be Marto Andi market, and then cut it again. You always used back so We know that this is 57 years and we know that this is 40 centimeters. Then you get your artwork, you will measure it. I believe this is 18 by 26 so that is 18 centimeters by 26 a half centimeters. So if you want to calculate it as 18 centimeters told, so 18 from 40 leaves 22 and you want to have the equal distant from the top and bottom, which gives you 11 centimeters, so you'll have 11 centimeters on top. 11 centimeters on the bottom is 26 a half weight. 26 a half from 50 will leave you 23 a half. Okay, 23 a half. Divided by by two is 11 and 3/4. If I'm correct. 11.75 So 11.75 11.75 That's my measurements. That's what I need to measure. Okay, So first I'm gonna show you how to do it like this. And then I'll show you how to do on the map. Come. You will measure. Remove your artwork so you don't damage it. You will measure 11.75 11.75 And then you would mark thieves. That's your measurement on this site. Again. It will be 11.75 on 11.75 on again. You join these up. That's your measure. So your measurement here will be 11. Your measurement here will be 11 but I'm not gonna mark this one. So then you just mark that 11 centimeters. Okay? Now, if you were doing this on the mat cutter, you would do it slightly differently. Obviously, you would be. You would have the not car here, you would have your you would have your lane marked. And then you would say, You're cut off to that mark. So he would. So there's your 11 centimeters there. Okay? So know that we've got that marked. We don't need to measure the site. We just flip it around, fitted in like that and market That gives us our final window size with the final window size, just to be sure, just make sure that is a little bit over the edge, and there's a little bit over the edge topping balm also. Okay, So I'm going to cut two sides of this with the mat cutter And then I'll cut two sides with the street edge so you can see exactly how it's done with my car. You will place it underneath at the size you you need. You will then take the my car. No, in the mat card is Elaine. That's where you should start on. That's where you end so that that lane will mark well, lane up with your cutter here, so you just make sure it's crystal to the end and a 45 degree cutter always stop at the lane. 45 degree car always cuts inside that age. Okay, so then will do the next one. Just flip around fish all the way on again. Take to this the gate. Real fish the car. And so that's a 45 degrees on the lane on push. Nice, smooth movement all the way through to the lane, then raised the car. So that's both top and bottom Cup Know what we'll do is we'll cut it not with the my car, but with the street edge. Important to remember. But when you're cutting, you're always cutting from the inside out. If you cut from outside, the bevel will be the wrong were owned and you have ruined. So you're cutting from inside the box all the way around. Take your street hedge laying up. Take your 45 degree cutter position that clocked Jama'at at the Lane Naysmith movement. Stop in the lane. Done as you can see that's cut through. Tom around. Do the same thing. Underside my nephew Qatar and set the car on the map. Nice moves movement. Stop in the lane. Released the cutter on. If I've done this properly, this should just follow. There you go and there's your mat. So what we do know? What we do know is we police are artwork. That's pretty simple. What you do is you take your artwork place on top. Why late to do is I like to just take a piece of tape. You can use scissors or Taylor efforts. If it's easy to tell, I usually use the scissors. Andi, I usually place one piece in the middle. Just hold it there so that I can have a look and see if I'm happy with the positioning before I fix it. So there you go, quite happy with that. Julia is quite nice, so bring it back to me like that, and then we'll at the T Hentges. It's important when you're using the tape that is pH neutral acid free. PH. Neutral. It's called many things. It will avoid damage to your artwork over a longer period. If this is hanging on a wall for a long time. On these air called T hinges because the are like tea like that, you caught your backing board the same way. 40 by 50 you're backing board will be placed on top. You're backing board will be placed on top find. Then you will just simply Lyon like that, ready to be it to be placed into your frame. 6. Class project: Hi. So know that you've seen holding my eyes cup using the tools, being careful, seeing her to 45 degree car works you should know, be able to go and select color of my cut the window for it on won't without any problems. So the project for this class is select a piece of artwork or a full graph moment and a piece of matting of the color of your choice in a win in a window with equal distance from top on bottom. You don't really want to wait it generally so equal distance from top and bottom left and right Upload some four grafs on leave Any comments? You You You wish Okay, so hopefully you find us useful. Andi, I will be uploading some or classes in the future. Thanks very much.
