About This Class

Digital calligraphy is taking the world by storm (especially on Instagram)! If you've always wanted to learn but don't know where to start, I'm here to help! In this class, we will go over the different tools that Procreate has to offer for the art of lettering. We will also delve into how to properly utilize layers, as well as what blending modes work for digital calligraphy (not all of them do)! 

I highly recommend having Procreate open on your iPad so you can follow along. We will have a class project in which you will combine the skills you have learned!

1. Introduction: Hey, guys, My name is Caitlin, but some of you may know me as juniper calligraphy and welcome to my intruder Procreate lettering class. In this class, we will be going over the basics of the procreate app. We're gonna learn how to utilize layers, apply layer adjustments. And we're also gonna learn how toe apply a greedy into your script using blending modes. And at the end, we're gonna have a project that's gonna utilize all of the skills that you learn in this class. And I can't wait to see what you guys come up with. Thanks and let's get started. 2. Procreate Overview: Alright, guys. So this is what you see when you first open procreate. This is what they call your gallery. And it has all your past and current projects all really accessible in one place. And if there's ever a project size that you want to do, that's kind of a weird size. Go ahead and press this plus sign press new canvas. And then here, you know, you could do millimeter, centimeters, inches, pixels, whatever you choose. I always do inches. You can go ahead and plug in what you want it to be. You could name it down here and then you compress create, and you are all done. Now, every time I after it entered this screen, it never lets me leave it till I make a canvas. So let me go ahead and make one. Um, if you name it untitled, you're gonna have a bunch of different campus sizes named Untitled, and it's really confusing. I did that by mistake. So definitely recommend. Don't doing that are not doing that just to make it easier for you. So what's you add that it's gonna go ahead and open it for you, and as you can see here? It's super simple. Everything you need is already here. You don't have to go to any, you know that. You don't have to go searching to find what you need. So super, super, quickly. I'm gonna go through these things. I don't want to spend too much time on this. So this right here is your brush size adjust right here. Below you have the opacity adjust. I don't use this that often. I do use it when I'm using, like, a wet water brush sometimes and then in the middle is your color sampler. So this, you see, this little guy pops up me do a quick a little sample for you Really quick. All right. Okay. So here, because the last color I uses pink pinks up here, press this guy dragon with the color. You want a sample and see here turned purple. So now, if this is like an image off the internet or something, you can color sample it, and then you can save that color to your color palette. Now, if you wanna undo a brushstroke, take two figures and tap it on the screen and it'll keep undoing. So if you see me doing the hat. That's what I'm doing moving along here. You have to go back to the gallery. These are your actions. Here's where you can save artwork. You can insert a photo. You can see you can flip your canvas and see what size it is. What DP Iet ISS preferences um, procreate does take video while you're going. I think you can turn that off. I don't use it, but I also don't turn her off. So that's up to you. Over here is the adjustments. Now these air layer adjustments, so this is only gonna affect the layer you have selected. So there's opacity, there's blurs. And then there's your normal hue, saturation and brightness and all that other stuff. I highly recommend taking a break and maybe playing around with these. Go ahead and scribble something on the screen and then go through each and every one of these and just see what they dio. I really only used the opacity, and sometimes this Goshen blur. Ghozi and I don't really know how to pronounce it, but the 1st 2 are really the ones that I use. Sometimes I'll use the hue, saturation and brightness here. So this is the saturation. This is the brightness. And this is the hue. I only really used these. If I have, like, a watercolor background that I want to make pop, I'll bring up the saturation, Orel, brighten it a little and bring up the saturation. But that's totally up to you guys. So moving along, this is the freehand tool. But I call it the ribbon tool because it looks like a little ribbon. And what you can do here is you can take your ribbon tool and draw whatever you want, and then go ahead and press this layer. Select arrow. Now, you can move this wherever you want. What you just drew. Um, I don't use this very often simply because I put everything on its own layer and I will get to that. So we're doing the undue again. All right. So, like I said, this arrows your layer select tool. My layer is pretty much empty. So it's I must have a little thing here that it's trying to select. So moving along, this isn't your brushes. Procreate comes with a ton of default brushes, all separated by genre. Super simple. I have a lettering section. Do you want to add a section? You could just bring it all the way over. Click New Set, and then you can click and drag and drop the brushes you want in your new section. But let me show you something really quick that a lot of people have been asking me, and that's about streamline. So all you do is select your brush and then press it again. You'll go to the brush settings. Now, if you come down here to stroke streamlines right here. I do recommend turning that all the way up. If it's down and show you really quickly, every little shake that you do is going to show up, as you can see. I mean, that's not that pretty. So let's undo that turn. Streamline all the way up. And as you can see, it's much sharper. It almost snaps into place. It kind of guesses where you were gonna go if you weren't shaking, which I may or may not be shaking. I haven't eaten yet. Who knows? This is your blur tool. I do not use this. This is gonna blur if you go like this with it. it's gonna blur the colors on either side of it. I don't use this. In my opinion, it is more for digital painting. I can show it to you really quick says you can see, like, blurring the two colors. And I'm going across. I don't use this, but if you want to play around with it, totally go ahead and do it. You might love it. Over here is your eraser. It's super cool, because every single brush that you have programmed in appropriate you can use as an eraser . So I really, really like that. They could have just added your run of the mill round eraser, but they didn't. They give you the option to do, use whatever a race, or you want so good on them for that. Over here are your layers. The really important thing to remember about layers is that whatever layer is on the bottom on the list is gonna be in the back on the canvas. So let me just show you really, really quickly. Okay? I'm just gonna write ipad because I don't know what the right. All right, So here's our word. IPad, Layer one. Now we're gonna do layer to and pink We're gonna write prove this isn't really pretty pink . Wow. Okay, so now we're gonna do our layer select to move the pink because I don't like how far down this is. So select it. You can do whatever you want with it now, as you can see here because it is above the black one. It's in front of the black one here, but I want it behind it. So you're gonna press it until it starts to flow and you're gonna drop it behind? Let's see. Now it's in the back. So you're layers on the bottom are in the back on the canvas. So now and I do recommend putting every individual word on its own layer and yeah, sure, you're gonna end up having layers all the way down to here. But it's super simple to just go to the word you want to move, select the layer, click the arrow and move it. It's so much easier just to do that. So let's go ahead. So did to delete them, you just swipe into the left and press delete. And then over here you have your color palettes. Some people utilize color palette. Some people don't. You don't have Teoh. I like to Because I know if I select a color like in my summer palette, I know what's gonna go together. So all you need to dio toe at a palette is click the plus sign. Okay, I guess maybe I get to otherness. Select it here, back arrow. And here's where you can add your Hughes to your color palette. So go to the hue your you want, and then take the little circle and go to the shady want. And once you found one that you like, go ahead and just click that square. It will save on when it comes time. Like it's it's complete and you want to name it. Click the back arrow, double click here, and that's where you can name it. I named mine after seasons, but you don't have to do that. So I hope you guys Joe enjoyed this little intro into the functions of procreate. And I hope you join me back for the next section. 3. Layers: All right, so now we're gonna talk a little bit more about layers. So as you can see, when you first open a project, it's automatically going to give you layer one. So let's go ahead and write something so we could mess around with these layer adjustments here that I touched on earlier. So my favorite brush is then Inc by Sasha Hickson. You can get that on the Creative Web or Creative market website. I'm sure there's somewhere else you can get it, but that is where I personally got it. And I use it for everything. I love it. So we're gonna go ahead and write something here. All right, We'll take our trusty layer, select arrow that we talked about earlier and move this guy. And now I'm gonna add a new layer and right, the second word. And I do this for every individual word when I do a project. All right, so I'm gonna keep these layers separate, so keep in mind, we have layer to selected, which is the word lettering. So every layer adjustment that we apply here is only gonna apply to the word lettering. So, opacity, you're gonna go ahead and click it. Take your pen, press the screen and pull this blue bar down. And as you can see, the word lettering is getting less and less opaque. It's getting more translucent. You could join if you wanted something with this look, you could just write it in grey, but I personally like this a lot better. So let me show you an example of how you how or why you would use this. So let's go ahead and select the layer and move it up here. And remember, it's on top of the list here, so it's going to be on top of everything on the canvas, but we want it behind. So let's tap until it floats, bring it on down, go back to opacity and bring it down. So I like to do is with wreaths, and this is the prime example. Before like this, they're completely competing with each other. You can't read either thing. You're completely distracted by both things. If you tone down the one in the back, you still pay attention to it. You can still read it, however, it's not competing with your script, so let's go ahead and move this guy back and we're gonna tap until he floats and put him back where he goes. Let's go ahead and move on to the next layer. Judgment adjustments. This is Goshen. Blur. Press the screen. Pull it up. This is gonna look like you didn't put your glasses on. Um, I do like this. I think this has a really cool effect. I do play around with this sometimes, however, I've never actively used it, if that makes sense. But I do think it looks really cool. Let's go ahead and turn. Goshen, Blur. Uh, okay. Well, motion board, this will give you a headache. This one's really neat. So once again, press the screen and drag it up. This, like, doubles It pulls it away from each other and blurs it really cool effect. I do kind of wish there was a way for the top one to stay sharp, because look at how need that looks. All right, we'll go ahead and take that guy off. I don't really use this one. Actually, I don't use this one. Perspective. Blur. You gonna press it? Gonna get this little circle. Go ahead and place it. Take your finger press the screen and pull like we did with the pen. But if you do it with the pen, it will bring your circles. Wherever the penniston go ahead and put him down there. Take your finger, pull it up and you'll see if you press this guy down here it on. Lee blurred where the arrow was pointing so you can take your finger and pull this guy around and watch what it does. And he's really cool. I don't use him either, but I could see it being super awesome, depending on what kind of project you were working on. Sharpen doesn't really apply here. It doesn't change the edge at all. So I don't use this for hand lettering, but I just thought I showed to you guys now noise. If you've ever taken a photograph in a low light situation, you know what noise is some? I think some people call it grain, but the term is in noise. So let's press noise. Take the pen, pull it up. And as you can see, it looks like a fuzzy TV or like how blacks look if you're photo is noisy because it was a little light, I don't use this, but I could see it being pretty cool. Depending on the project you were working on, you could really use any of this stuff, Whatever makes you happy. All right, so now that I've gone through those things and I will touch on these in the next section but because I don't have any color here, these don't apply. So now I'm gonna show you what you would do if you liked the way these layers were interacting with each other and you wanted to lock them in. So go ahead and pull your layers down. You're gonna take both your fingers, press them on the layer and pinch. So you got it. You're gonna pinch them together just like that. Now we're gonna undo toe on, merge them and up here, and it'll tell you what it just undid. Now I'm just gonna put blank layers here. But say you wrote four words just like this, and you wanted them toe all walk in together. You would just sandwich them together. So I want layer one through this top layer toe. All be one unit. I would take the bottom and the top pension together and now everything that was in there is one layer, and I can just select both of these and then I can just keep going if I want Teoh. So obviously I wouldn't want to keep that there. I kind of like him right there. If I decide that's what I want to do, I can pinch these two together, and sometimes it is fussy. If the two layers air on top of each other, it's really fussy. So what I do, if it's being fussy like this is I just at a blank layer, and then it will work much easier for you. So that's how I do that, because it always gives me a hard time. Pretty much always. I've actually had a pretty good look during this video. Well, that is all for the a little bit more on layers and layer adjustments. Gradients & Layer Adjustments: So now we're going to get into the fun stuff, and I'm gonna show you guys how to do a nice Grady int on your script using blending modes . So first, let's go ahead and write something. You have your default layer one here and again. I like to use the thinning brush. This is by Sasha Hixon again. I use it for everything. All right? And then our arrow here so I can move this layers. New layer. All right. I'm actually fine with where that is. Okay, so now you're gonna add a layer on top. Let me show you quickly. I like to use when I do radiance. I like to do the soft airbrush here. It's really gonna blend your colors for you. I'm gonna use my muted palette a Mogo an with this peri winkle color here. Now, this end here means the blending mode is normal. So when we start to color, it's gonna be just on top of the script because the layer here is above all these and are blending mode is normal. Let me do some more that I can show you. All right, so click the end here. Now there's a lot of different blending modes, but there's only a few that work with lettering, and the main one are pretty much the only one I uses. Lighten here. So it's dark and lighten. Contrast difference and color. And these do all different things. But because we're not working with a painting or an image or something with a big spectrum of colors and tones and things like that, lightning is pretty much the only section that's gonna work the way that you want it to do a Grady in, at least So if we click, lighten here. As you can see, anything that is a dark tone was affected by the color, but if it's a light tone, the color didn't affect it at all. And that's how you can get a really nice Grady in on Onley your script. So let's go ahead and at a different color here. And as you can see because I use the airbrush, it's gonna go ahead and give you that ombre effect for you. What? I love doing this. All right, so now we have our ombre effect here. Always make sure you keep your color layer separate from your script. because if you do combine them, it's just gonna look a mess. And if you just try to apply the blending mode, it's gonna apply it to everything, including the script, and you're just not gonna be able to see anything. So always make sure that your color layer is separate from your script, and you can also go ahead and select your layer with the color layer. Select and you can do this. You can change the size if you want to get some blacks in there. I do this sometimes, but I'm not gonna do it this time. I just wanted to show you guys what it looks like. So now, really quickly, because we finally have color on the pat on the canvas. I'll show you these layer adjustments here. So hue, saturation and brightness. Here's Hugh. Go ahead and slide this up and down and just see what it does. So obviously the Reds gonna give it red tones gonna come through the green The blue read here is your saturation. You bring it all the way down. It will be gray scale all the way up is the highest saturation. I don't really use this all the way up. I only do it just a little bit. And then down here is your brightness. You can bring it all the way down back to black or all the way up. I do it. I do both of the use just a little bit. That here is color balance. So if you wanted to lean blue, Arlene Warm. I don't use this either, but I highly recommend just messing around with it. Just like everything else. We've gone over. Just because I don't personally use it myself doesn't mean that you won't really enjoy it for yourself. Curves This is I don't use this at all for this. I was a photography major. And when you're working and Photoshopped with images, curves is something that you would use. But if you just want to see what it does, you can pull different parts of the curve and it'll do different things to your image. So definitely play around with that. But I don't I don't personally use this myself. Then down here is re color. So when you press re color these cross hair show up and whatever, Hugh Okay, so go ahead and move it to here. Whatever Hugh matches what you've selected will change over here. So as you can see, I selected it. I came up here and shows the purple when it changed everything. I do use this sometimes if I just want to see different color options without having to remake my entire piece. So that is how you do an ombre effect on your script using blending loads. And I'm I'm gonna have a really cool project for you guys to do that. I will explain in the next section. 5. Project Overview : So now I'm going to do a little sample project utilizing ah, lot of the things that we've gone over in this class. So I'm gonna start off by writing something once again sending Sasha Hickson always. My son has a sign that says this in his room. So that's why I'm gonna do this. One arrow moves and remember, every word on its own layer is easier in the long run. I don't like that. So, yeah, that's one of the things I love about lettering digitally on hair is if I was doing pen and paper and I didn't like that m, I'd have to start completely over. - All right, So let's move, sunshine. And that's the beauty of it being on a tone later as I can just move that word. All right, So let's say I wanna have a drop shadow on the words sunshine. And for this, we're gonna utilize layers, and we're gonna utilize opacity on the layer adjustments, so make sure and sunshine is selected. Take three fingers and pulled down on the screen. Press copy paste. Go ahead and move it underneath the original sunshine because we want the shadow to be behind the original script layer adjustments, opacity Turn it down pretty far down and I'll show you why in a second, select it and bring it over. So as you can see, we have a nice drop shadow here now and now we're gonna apply our Grady int so new layer at the top of everything and you can go ahead and combine all these with the pinch The pinching motion We went over and lighten, lighten and then go to your brushes Grab the soft airbrush here. And like I said, I like it all the way up Size wise Totally a t m when you use my spring pellet for this one . And as you can see because the drop shadow um, the opacity is turned down, but it's still considered a dark tone. So it's still gonna pick up this Grady int which I'm gonna turn that down a little. We'll see now I cant cause I'm urged the layers So we're out on do you just so I could turn that down? Okay. If you follow me on Instagram juniper calligraphy By the way you know that I am addicted to this right now I cannot stop doing this. It's so fun. I just I don't know. I can't stop. I mean, can you blame me? Look at how pretty this is. All right? Now, I'm not gonna bring this all the way up, because then it's gonna get kind of hard to read. So what? I'm gonna dio to make this blend better here between the black and the yellow. Make sure you're still selected on your colors. Go to the Goshen Blur and turn it up. If you watch up here, it's gonna blend a lot nicer. I don't like it all the way up. It kind of muddies it up a little bit. But about right here is the sweet spot. And then now, if you want, you can go ahead and merge these guys. So now you've completed a Grady int with a blending mode. You've utilised layers to do a drop shadow as well as the opacity layer, just to also do the drop shadow. So, for your project, I really want you guys to pick a quote that means something to you and tried it. Incorporate some layer adjustments, but definitely I want to cease ingredients with blending modes and I'm so excited to see what you guys come up with. Thank you so much for joining me.
