About This Class

In this class, I will introduce you to producing electronic music on your computer, using free, open source software. This class is intended for beginners, whether you are musically trained or not.

Ever wanted to make your own electronic music, but not sure where to start?

Hi, my name is Donny. I love making music and have released over 100 tracks. I produce under the name Depth Death and my own name. I've also been teaching people how to make their own music and that is the basis for this class.

All you need for the class is a computer (laptop or desktop, Mac, Windows or Linux).

  1. First, we will be installing the software: a 100% free, open source Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
  2. Next we will make a looping drum beat, add bass and a lead.
  3. Finally, we will expand the loop and add a variation.
  4. Then you can export your track and share it with the Skillshare community and the world!

 ////

Once you complete this class, you can continue with the next class in this series,
Electronic Music Production II: Track Arrangement
https://skl.sh/33GDylT
where we expand on the track we made in this class!

Let's go. 2. the DAW: hello and welcome to less than one. The D A w The dog or digital audio workstation is a software will be using to make music with this class will be using L M. M s. So in your browser go through L m m s dot io. Um, it's 100% free cross platform and open source could look around the web site. And when you're ready, go through download and it's failed for Linux. When do is a Mac, I'm on windows, so I'm gonna download the window 64 bit and want to download the program. Go ahead and install it. Damn. Now, once you open it, you may have to adjust the buffer settings. I don't want to set it too high or too low, but I kind of put in the bottom quarter. I won't go into too much, but you had problems with the program running. You may need to adjust the buffer settings okay and restart. And we're going to start a new project, go to file new from templates and empty. And we've got a brand new project here, and we're in a clean up a little bit. Get rid of the control rack and this move the FX mixture of here and now we're ready for lesson to making beats. 3. Making beats: the Kick: welcome to lessen to making beats the kick. First, let's save our project can use the bile save as or you compress it this guy con create a new folder, Name it something interesting like skills share tracks and opened the folder. And now you can name the bottle something calling mine skills. Now we're going to start making a beat and the song editor Press the ad beat baseline button here and you can show and hide that Beat based my editor with the button in the toolbar. Now in the sidebar, we're going to click open my samples drums and you'll see a list of drum samples. Click on a sample to get a preview. So right now we're looking for a kick. So when you find a kick that you like, go ahead and dragged over to Deviate Editor, and now you have a step editor for the Kick Press Play and start clicking in the step editor to add a kick drum turn to step off by clicking it again. You can change how fast you want to be. So play by adjusting the tempo bpm in the toolbar beside it, up or down for double click it and you couldn't put a specific number. All right, so next will continue with drum 4. Snares and Hi-Hats: welcome to less and three snares and hi hats. Now we're going to add a snare drum. So in the sidebar, find a good snares. I try to pick something that sounds good with kick, and it sounds when you see something you like to go ahead and add it to defeat editor. Okay, and now you'll have a step editor for the snares. Reboot by. Be on them again. Now you're doing this. You may want to adjust your kicks so that they were you there. Next word. High hat drag dropping at a sample by double quick. Like so play around with that. I have a way you did with stairs. Kicks. Remember, you can remove step by clicking on it again. No, you can do is you can adjust the volume of eat drum sample by drag knob Theo Up and down. Keep playing around with the editor less. We're going to add in a fixed channels controlled by withdrawing to add a new channel, quick title and changes. I noticed that the channel is number one second, the theater on a dog but note icon for a drum track notice. At the top, you have a FX setting one and do this for all the drum. Now you can adjust the volume of all the drums at the same time in the FX. Mix it when you're happy with your beat. Dave the project by going to file. 5. Bass: book up to less and for my favorite part base in the sidebar, Go to My Presets, Zen at sub FX and Base. You'll have several based sounds you can test out crying. Oh, press play and be editor as to let the bass sound to go with B. You can double quick appreciate to add it to the D editor Now, right quick Step editor and select Open and Dan a role. Now you have a keyboard. Regular play doh. Using the bass sound to the right of the keyboard is a grid note by dragging, and you could short way to add more notes and right whatever. Now mix channel for the base, just like you did for the drum. So it's heading for the base. Don't Tonto FX setting, too. You can also some of the other parameters setting with Finally save a new version. 6. the Lead: welcome to less than five lead. We're done with the Beat editor for now, so we can go ahead and close it and we're back to the song editor in the sidebar. Go to my presets. Triple oscillator and pick a good sound for lead instrument are drag and drop the preset onto the song editor and add a segment to the right of Beat Baseline zero Double Quick and the Empty Segment for your lead to open the piano roll and the song editor. Press the blue button and press play way every time. Happy what they had a chance. 7. Changing Sounds: welcome to lessen three changing sounds. Now, the thing about the nose we made called Midi knows that we can easily change the sound without changing the notes. So sidebar. But another preach that you want to hear, drag it onto the track editor. Now, don't forget to change the FX heading back to the corresponding FXX channel. Now open the baseline editor, like added a preset by mistake, you cook with dogged and removed track. Now you try Baseline editor. Uh, every 8. Beats and Bars: welcome to lessen seven beats and bars. So far, we have a two bar Luke. The next four bar. Two more seconds. Activity. Baseline track. Just look now, right, click over the segment Previte, right. Click over the next segment and extend 0.4 bars by right clicking on the time. Now we're going to add a variation of meat for the last bar. Click the cog on the drug track and close this track right click on the first segment of your clone. Beat baseline track selectively to this for the next two segments, but leave the 4th 1 instead. Delete the port segment of the original beat Baseline track. Opened the beat Baseline editor. Now change the beat to something different to create a transition before the four barley. - Now we're going to expand these four bars in 16. Press the edit mode, but select your poor bar loop. Then, while holding the control button, click drag and release to duplicate them to the next segments. Repeat this two more times, and now you have 16 bars. Extend a loop point by right clicking on the timeline. Notice the FX mixer. Something's not right. Looks like a fish FX heading needs to be reset. Big setting check. The FX setting said it, too. That was better, so we're basically done and finally save as a new version. 9. Exporting: welcome to lessen eight Exporting. Now that we've got 16 bars were ready to export. One last thing is to check your way, have three channels and a master channel Master is the overall volume. Just want to make sure is not in the rich, but also not too low. Leave the faster channel loan. But I just don master levels until the matter is barely in the yellow, but not read now. Good. A file export you could export to waive bogey or MP three. If you save the wave, I'd suggest 44 100 hertz sample rate and 16 bit depth. Export is loop for MP 3 320 K is the highest quality for bit rate. And there you go. Now you can listen to your truck anywhere or use a for multimedia productions. 10. Sharing your music: welcome to lessen. Nine.
