About This Class

The class is split into two separate classes, in this first, I'll introduce you to the base structure, the skeleton of the arm as you will learn that It's essential when it comes to designing limbs in your characters, it represents the edges of the mannequin where muscles originate and insert. By knowing the position of the bones you'll less likely make lopsided limbs.

It's meant both for beginner and intermediate artists, for beginners to start from scratch and experienced to revise what they already knew or never had the motivation to go through the textbooks with a bit too advanced illustrations.

I'll show you simplified approaches, how to accurately create bones from premature blueprints as basic 3D shapes, making those simple shapes first covers the edges where the bony tissue runs as well as the directions of perspective.

At first, I'll warm you up with 4 lovely exercises, then get right into the structure, position, and characteristics of each bone and in the end leaving you with a personal drawing process of a very difficult pose and mention all sorts of helpful tips.

What you'll learn:

  • Basic proportions of the arms
  • How to unlock your x-ray vision and predicting the bones underneath the skin
  • How to design and simplify the upper arm bones
  • How to design and simplify the lower arm bones
  • How to draw hand bones
  • Rotating the bones from different angles using 3D shapes as guidelines
  • Helpful measuring techniques and other tips on how to draw the arm bones from a reference

Assistant Resources You Might Need:

  • Worksheets to alleviate the studying
  • Hand References
  • Human figure reference

1. Introduction: Hey there. My name is Lucas, and I'm a traditional pencil digital and water mixed media artist, and I'm here to inform you that those basic geometrical shapes you learned math and find it very boring than you already possess. The building blocks of an egg create mannequin for anatomically correct structure of the arms. Just need an extra ingredient in your soup of knowledge, a pinch of anatomy that will expand the current state of mind. Help you understand what those shady conniver Zehr opting in certain positions beneath the skin, and you're all prepped up for professionally designing your arms for your characters. Because the course ended up being too long, I divided into two distinct courses. This first will introduce you to the base structure, the skeleton of the arm from which the muscles originate and insert. It's meant both for intermediate and beginner artists. 2nd 1 is still a work in progress. Should be up in no time will be about muscle behavior structure styles guideline to find your own styles, etcetera. First, I'll introduce you to a lovely warm up exercises to tune your brain for spatial perception and stroke control their stock with the bones of the arms. At the end of each video, I prepare you exercises you can do for homework in anytime, anywhere in your busy lives, requiring only a piece of paper pencils and 15 to 30 minutes of your time. So, without any further ado, sharpen those pencils, reload your lands, and I'll see you in the next video. 2. 1 WARM UP : friendly reminder that you can just start heavy lifting without warming up those stupid joints. The same principle applies for drawing only here, you flexing your brain. Just think about their one day where you grind it for hours, drawing after drawing, tried to get it right, but only ended up, crumbling the papers and quit. So in the follow up, I'll introduce it. A few exercises, which will serve in increasing quality in every complex drawing. Exorcist number one, his stroke control but drawing lines as straight as possible from short to medium. Belong short, mistaking about 1/5 of a page medium, half the page and long all the way to the edge. If you really want to strive for steadier arm, switch the landscape and go from there. Make your own standards. After drawing a straight line, go over that line six times each. Try staying in range as much as possible and in the end, examine how much deviated from the primary line because that's an indicator. How maestro control you actually have. It is a bit tedious, but trust me something something STDs is. This holds much greater value than at first glance. Exercise number two. It's about flexing your spatial perception by drawing two dimensional and three dimensional shapes, gradually increasing difficulty by playing shadows and different angles. So just get creative. Set up your own rules, drawing away that it's out of your comfort zone to improve it. Accelerated Rate and Exorcist number three. It's about initiating creativity. Whenever you feel empty on ideas, just start drawing lines. The sline should and will turn into forms and those forms in the creatures, because the often leads to procrastination, a vicious pattern where we postponed things. We should be doing that sometimes you just get a start without any resistance thinking. The point is that you shouldn't wait for the idea. Come to you. You want to get the day the A first by initiating with action to obtain inspiration and motivation, start with various objects in the room, maybe utensil sword furniture. Eye. For an example. Start with my favorite face, A drew for years. Maybe the source is your favorite movie, your video game character, your celebrity or just sheer imagination. And then this. You'll see how fluently the ideas can trickle out of your head. I do this exercise all the time and still managed to draw every day. Exercise number four The most efficient way to progress is by reference Recall. Repeat. Basically, you commit wherever you want to improve the grab a reference. Numbness. Replicate every single detail unless your field it requires you to do so. If not the pictures, the major forms their position in space and effective. Then when you're done already sick and for the fresh reference, you hold it right there, turn the paper and do that step you wanted to skip. Recall it from a memory and in the end, compared to and study where you made a mistake after death, Repeat for the next thing. You want to improve it. Splendid. Now I have a set of lovely exercises that will always warm you up before engaging into any larger project. In the following video will begin with the wonders of the bones of the arms 3. 2 Drawing Upper Arm Bones: first off, Where does an arm begin? Nope. Not there. Close, but still not it. Yep, you guessed it. It emerges of the pit of the neck with a collarbone. Its structure is the simplest of all. Out of bones. It's thicker in the middle, but they pristine her towards the end. And according to Richer, it's proportional value. Holds 3/4 of one head. It's organic. Black story is I introduced into an s shape or three parts three cylindrical or rectangular tiles that will make it easier for you to rotate them and draw from different angles. Position in space. First, let's take a look at the forward and backward motion if we connect both ends with the line . The line passes approximately through the middle of the neck bird obras. It moves a couple of centimetres forward when flexing are trapped, soy or reach for something very far, and it goes slightly beneath the seven cervical. When stretching the arms behind the clavicle hardly descends by an inch. When elevated, it reaches the alignment of the chin, and maximum range travels upto in alignment with the jawline. Another important notice is how s line off the clavicle slowly curves inward when changing the angle homework, I suggest you pause the video and do these exercises right away. When your mind is still fresh, your name phone first example is by experimenting with different angles. If you still find it very difficult to rotate than try and redraw this one dimensional clavicle design, kind of like those microchipping ratings. Second assignment. Here we draw from a reference and just simplify the bone. You don't even need to use three rectangular shapes, just one hole s curved wafer. Just make sure to imply darker values when to shift in the surface. A curse. The last assignment form or advanced, you draw from a reference and this time started the surface anatomy. I envision a triangle between the a chrome ian ants and the Manu Graham in the middle. That's where the skin softens. His transition between the bones hands. The latter Radiation imply the darker values of the 2nd 3rd of the clavicle, where most of the skin folds inward. The shoulder blades, also known as scapula, us. There are three important protruding parts that you need to remember that roller coaster rail is called a chromium process. The hoop score, a quick process, and the socket holding the humerus is called glan it. For Sha, the proportional value is the same as collarbones. The transition of the collarbone onto the a chromium process creates a sort of a step down that is seen on the surface. This roller coaster swoops round into the bag, getting the name spine of the scapula and stitches into the edge of the blade. It's as shape and an important landmark that it's seen on the surface. As we lift the arms, I showed you how carbon follows the action. So there's the scapula, which also rotates outward when aiming towards Maura. Gaining image use overlapping lines. Now everything looks more massive. If you struggle to understand the position of these bony parts, when in certain muscles they all sit apart for about one index finger from each other. Because the scam flies so complex, I've broken it down into a few simple steps in the front. You you first make a five angle shape that is resembling the kite. Then add the box planet for Sha, a chrome ian and the core acquit process. Both are emerging under about a 90 degree angle in correlation for each other. Here is how it protrudes from the side. It's a simple, clear, boxy hook. In the end, the plight of scurvy lines and connect the collarbone for 3/4 view through a five angled shape. Thicker volume at the top and thinner in the bottom. Apply the boxy or elliptical socket, give it a hook and finish with the roof, just like building a house. Do the same principle for the back view. Five. Angled shape for shot and now the roof, and you already know how to design the scapula from the neutral angle. The easiest way to reduce the shoulder girdle is by encasing the whole into a box. The top layer of that box has got the cover at the edges. 40 A chromium section. Then it's slightly descends below the line. When concluding into the neck From stop view, you can clearly envision a bow preparing to be fired. Here's a simple representation of a girdles motion how the scapula and other components follow the action when near resting General elevation, extreme shrugging outward rotation inward rotation, along with some anterior tilt and loosening. For your assignments. Use freshly sustained information and try replicating the scapula from of reference underneath the skin. At first it will be confusing due to a lot of distractive bumps, but the biggest clue the body will provide is this 120 degree angle. So for the sake of it, I went on to do my own photo, shoot my friends back, and, as you can see in the picture below, I also traced the bone for you guys for the purpose, for checking with the results in the end. And for those of you who are still kind of lost, locating it under the skin for a shoulder girl, that's a set of both collarbones and scapula. I create an entire torso. Start with the rib cage because it helps me and the Spurs individual parts around. When the scapula doesn't move up or down, it extends exactly to the middle of that rib cage. That's not our anchor point helpful for you to orientate from. I even applied the directional lines in each bones, so it really checks up all the elements with the direction of the perspective because, as you can see in this example, the person stands below the horizon line there is below rice, which means that the observable object will in any position and no matter which way rotated , reveal the top plains of main and subsidiary elements. Here's the humerus. This is the longest bone of the arms, measuring an entire 1.5 heads in length. The top protruding piece is called the Greater Tube. Rosset E remember it for the muscle chapter structure divides into a ball, lipping on a stick and ending with a pyramid. Death pyramid has a cylindrical shape at the corners. In the pyramid, there are three individual sections. There's a ball that rotates the radius, a spool that is angled towards the torso and works as a poorly for the owner. And there's a protruding internal Khan dial that is seen and felt on the inside. Last but not least, an external conned I'll from the front view. You can see that it isn't that prominent at all because it's aligned with the capitulate, with all the individual pieces combined from the front, you outside an inside view. The bone is not complicated at all. These were the two for shorten angles, which you can try to accomplish soon after drawing a bunch of sketches from the neutral positions. Also, please do not neglect the existence of this through angles. Let me walk you through the process. By beginning with a container, you cover the proper perspective right away, slowly building your way to the end. Still, basic shapes because it's easier for your brain to more around in space for alleviating the struggle of memorization just remembered this simple pattern. When quicks catching the joint ball spool conned, I'll simple Is death for your assignment. Okay, for now, combined the simple shapes those cylinders pyramids balls into a humorous find this much references as possible on the Internet and study from them. Try a different angles Also. Still, it really sinks in and you're able to unlock X ray vision on a model. 4. 3 Drawing Lower Arm Bones: the owner and the radius. Both bones are measuring one hat and 1/4 hands in length. Vilna travels from the radio Older joined from the spool resembling an ass freedom along the forearm and ending with a circular bomb scene on the pink side behind the wrist bone. A NASCAR of his achieved because of the first authors inclination towards the external, conned I'll. The 1st 3rd starts is erecting in the shape. Then, from the 2nd 3rd down softly transitions into a tube. The most important surface bump is the elbow. The bottom plan is visible for a bottle with of three fingers before blending in with a flex her and extensive muscle mass. Another important baron to remember is when forearm is raised in tow, a 90 degree angle. A triangle is formed in the back of you. It radius is coming off from the capitulation traveling down towards the wrist and extends for about one finger further than the owner and it will always be on the thumb site structure is the reversal. Now the first harvest cylindrical and carries a lump called by several to ferocity than transitions in directing their framework. Here's an illustrated rotation. First is Super Nation, when the lump is facing Dilma and the promise facing up, then pronation when the lamp eastern externally and the palm is facing down and the neutral position when the lamp is aligned with the elbow basically invisible and the promise feitian sideways and now, how to dry First, start with a container again. Stack out the cubes thick in the half of the first ER, because there's the thickest part combined with outward and inward protrusions on Lee, seen clearly from the back. You if you're not drawing zombies, skinless paper orders basic skeletons is completely irrelevant. Then it starts dislodging, evolving into an S like flow. Now apply more details. If you like that part, stitching onto the humorous hinging on the spool kind of looks like a skate ramp than a roof displaced on it. The fit into this pool And as I thought you earlier the 1st 3rd is boxing and softly transitioning into a tube. The tail finishes with a flat disc for a simpler version, and realistic version acquires a point. The growth. Here's me drawing the front view, very try a bit. Me. Do a humorous ball school candle just like before and connect the skate ramp rupturing outwards. These air their bleak protrusions or notches. I mentioned earlier, adding the fine organic field. Let's look at the top view radius and ulna and the bottom you radius owner. A quick revised, all of a pro nation process. Firstly, Dropbox get the right. The mansions check everything in perspective. Reciprocal toe porosity in Super Nation is on the older side and now twisted, brominated palm faces down. Brady is going over. The owner by citadel toe ferocity faces outwards that is all prepared for a homework. Here's your homework. First I x ray the reference on draw Both the humorous and the old mind radius thinking about the hinge motion. Make the point on an elbow and connected to the bump before risk on the pink inside. And, if it's struggled, scoring the volume of the elbow, it's a bit higher than the external conned ill to locate the external Kanda Lorient. This contour, which is the long super Nader and long radial extents, a wrist murder basic stance for muscles slightly below their hides, an external conned ill with the help of the directions perspective, connect the cylinder and get the intercon dial a commander with the elbow to get a triangle , and from there, that upward rotated elbow travels to the wrist as the bump is disclosed by another silhouette from the flexor muscle group. Now paralytic that owner, make a mildly for shortened rectangle and connect the radius. 5. 4 Hand bones: the hand bones Ah, hand measures about a 3/4 of a head and couldn't be further dissected into three parts. The wrist, the palm and the fingers pouring, more technical terms. Carpools, metacarpals and phalanges. These air, then further divided into Hafs. The first have extends from the carpool zone up to the center of the longest metacarpal. They're carpal zone is taken only 1/3 of the first half of a hand. The other 2/3 are taken by metacarpals, the length from a center of a bowl from the largest metacarpal upto a fingertip, including the fat beds. It's half of one head to accurately deduce the length of the fingers half the distance between the wrist and the knuckles and get the length of the first filante. Continue the division until you reach the end of the chain, and since the other fingers are a little shorter, help yourselves with the arches. All eight individual carpal bones can be reduced into an elliptical shape and underneath their shape, revealing a concave arch. The only important carpal bone is that settled shape trapeze iam, allowing a thumb to move in a large variety. All right now for doing inspection in the joint flexibility first frame is in 3/4 view. The position of the thumb is neutral, presenting an upside down number one or a check mark thumb spreading outwards can get the little troubling so dry this easier approach at a drum blocking number one or a check mark because more familiar for your brain. First, this student mansions then folded into third perfect shortcut for for short positions. With this method, you achieve the correct directions of perspective, and then it can feeling the desire to pieces. The graph is showing its curved pathway ending in a nine degree angle that that is outward saber. To repeat this huge range of motion again, extending forward along the X and Y axes and concludes the flexibility at an internal reach on the pinky fat bed under a 45 degree angle, give or take here, a thumb metacarpal is completely aligned with the index finger. Looking from a side is still apart because it squishing the muscle stipe. The rest of the four fingers I able to band under a 90 degree angle. They spread apart from each other and acquire slight left and right movement but the movement is limited. The risk is capable of extending under 90 degree angle and also flexing under a 90 degree angle, able to move laterally 45 degree angle, enabled by a shorter endpoint off all Nuffer extra space and immediately half last that range. Along the way emerges the metacarpals own. It's contained in an uneven box, the papers water towards the fingers and presenting as an art in a way that the largest metacarpals stretches the bird ist. The thumb metacarpal extents were about a middle of that box. The rhythm of the artist continues to the fingertips, a clear indication that something must have went wrong when designing your hands is when any individual part in your hands the line under a straight line never, ever use straight lines, every part in your hands is aligned in a matter of arches. Also, the fingers carry a subtle twist towards the vertical line. In the middle, there are many ways to design your hands. You ought to use the circle version or the dot workers practically used any method that appeals the most view and accurately covers the proportions of the hand. In the end of the chain away to the flanges, a cluster of three co dependent bones where each one's distance is reduced by half of the distance of a previous bone. They carry a so called safety locks in the back to prevent your delicate fingers from twisting in the wrong direction. Then they continue in the straight line, lipping on a spool, and the bottom side gets curved. The address to get consistently narrow. Where towards the last flanges for the man a couple shape. All you need to know is the structure off the knuckles, and I'll explain that for Does that want to know more? It helps me to imagine a retched wrench that is starting from a cube and gripping on a ball or a pyramid in the end. From both sides, curves inward and from the bottom side carries an arch that is concave. Still finding vague about correct directions of perspective. Utilize this procedure a cylindrical design, helping you with orientation of elements. If you think you make wobbly ellipses, you can use them in something more fundamental. A rectangular shapes, long blocking body, then divided into bridges and joints, is wider blocks. Homework time. Your first assignment would be to draw hand from imagination. But the only neutral state using boxes wrist in the palm can be combined into one group because they move in separately. Very have it your arrived an accurate coordinates for each element in your hand, moving on to the second assignment, using the reference and drawing the bones under the skin as rectangular boxes or containers . Again, we're learning our brain to see the bigger, simpler shapes containing those intricate forms designed by majestic cosmic architect. We all idolize, or we can replicate the reference as a cylindrical version also advisable. Nothing like those are tresses your guidelines because the bring and index finger are aligned under the same arch, which swirls to the last Pinky filante. Third assignment requires a bit more practice. We draw the bones underneath the skin by guiding ourselves through clues through bony protrusions poking through the skin. Detect with which plane a finger space towards you. The best clue is the fingernails on the thumb is full of slightly inward, enhancing the convexity but revealing the top layer. Mostly, the rest of the fingers are reeling. Only side layers of the nails hands the fingers supposing from a profile. The next video will be a longer drop together because I will present to you my perspective , my subjective thoughts as approaches towards every element in the entire arm. It also might convey an epiphany to you by making it think outside the box as you hear some helpful tips and tricks. 6. 5 Conclusion - Draw with me: okay, Before any of your pencils touch the paper. Do not skip this most important thing, which is declaring the position of this line. Now why this line? Because the horizontal line as it will determine whether the object is a bow or below your eyesight. I always envisioned it before doing anything. Then I create a container as it holds the whole of of reference of drawing. It works for me if I create a giant cylinder and towards the floor, opening the ellipses more and more because the surface planes off the objects below 10 to reveal more and more to the I said then I started with a major forms like the head. Now why the had, because more familiar for me to draw from top to bottom than bottom up and connect necked rip cage that first reap where the arm begins. You might also see that I use a lot of measuring with a pencil. And not only do I determine how many heads go from the top of the figure to the bottom, also blamed for individual parts like the distance from the chin in the mid breasts. Also, how much birder does the rib cage extend in relation to the head filled. And how far resides the deltoid insertion into scapula from the job. Doing this measurements trains your brain to focus more on the whole of an object instead of one small part and the closest neighbors for beginners. Usually the compression of limbs occurs depending on when they start. Another help for measuring tape is by orientate yourself with the help of the angles. This applies to the part where most of the four shortening occurs. For example, here, the angle between the shoulder origins discovered completely. So all you have is an angle between the elbows and the breasts. In between. There hides a rib cage disk, the clavicle relation and the crew me in relation. Both forearms measure nearly one had. Well, at least one of them does the right one. The right one is foreshortened. Just announced that expert quarter of a head disappears, and conveniently enough, if we make a straight line over here, it passes right through the jar corner and through the oma. At the wrist. I determine the face in planes through observation. Off muscle flatten, the flat surface indicates layer of a rectangle and the external called I'll signals Me where the shift in the surface a curse. The arms are simplified into boxes. I turned the muscle silhouettes into jagged edges. Again, this works for me. Here I cleared the mass sketch for you to increase the clarity when I begin with the bones , the action line is also acknowledged. I didn't forget it into rough sketch. I drew the lines by following the action lines, the gesture of the body and its parts in combination with boxes, amplifications and angle orientations. It was a synergetic process, not in my sketches. All accurate, improper. I finally begin with the humors. I organized myself through obvious protrusions. Then a middle scapula noticed that it is an extreme outward rotation. The fortune is mostly facing up. You gotta cover the obvious parts first, like those who really stick out the most, like the spine of the scapula and its blade. The outer conned ill and dinner on the left arm, and the only other is with the elbow and the circular bump on the wrist. And when I finished the structure, I connect the ball of the humerus to it. The clavicle is below the horizon, of course, but elevated in just the way that it hides the top layers, moving on to the ulna and radius. As you know from before, the owner has a rectangular start and the cylindrical framework and the radius is its mirror image. I even applied the bicep. It'll it'll ferocity, I suggested with same to revise the must landmarks for the incoming course. To increase the prominence of the bones, I go through the soft lines with to be 0.5 millimeter lead pencil shading structures. A plank or shadows and ambient occlusion is at the far shine, a chromium process, then the irrelevance. Parts like the rib cage, the head and the muscles are clearly colored with six B pencil. No, I couldn't help myself getting slightly off the tracks here and shading the entire figure. It just felt incomplete for me, despite being only about bones, and this is how it ultimately should be. I think learning to draw shouldn't be boring, but instead should be a creative playground, never to be revolting. It's about keeping the inspiration. The hands line a fairly simple position from the side. The only detail which is more mentioning is that twist words the middle finger that waste this prominent? Because if you look closer, the pinky and index Zinner planes are both revealed. Now this concludes the skeleton of the arm course. In no time, I'll upload the following course about muscle behavior, muscle structure and so much more. Don't forget the reference section because it procured your lovely notes that were displayed in the videos and then are fully enhanced in the downloadable option. Remember to keep it cool, do a lot of drawings. A lot of time, you'll feel de motivated, and you'll need to start with action to grip on the inspiration. I wish you the best of luck and seeing the next course Cheers.
