Don't waste time learning unnecessary Chinese textbook vocab and phrases you'll never use. This course has everything a complete beginner needs to know to learn Mandarin Chinese. This method has been very successful with all of my face-to-face Mandarin Chinese international students here in China, and now I'd like to share it with you. Don't worry if you haven't studied Mandarin Chinese before- we are starting from the beginning!

There are SO MANY great reasons to study Mandarin Chinese.

Nelson Mandela said, "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart." Nowhere is that truer than in China, where most native speakers of Mandarin Chinese can't speak English. I've been in China and speaking Mandarin Chinese for many years, and I'm still amazed by what a different reaction I get from people here when I speak to them in Chinese. People are so much more willing to open up and be friendly with you if you have taken the time to learn basic Mandarin Chinese and you use your Chinese to speak to them.

Learning Mandarin Chinese is one of those skills that can be a little scary, and so it's avoided by most people. That means opportunity! Even if you learn basic Chinese, you'll still be ahead of 99% of the people who travel to China, work with Chinese people or do business in China. So few people know how to speak Chinese that if you can speak basic Mandarin Chinese, you'll be ahead of the rest! Learning Mandarin Chinese has opened so many doors for me in my career, and I'd love you to have the same experience.

Speaking Chinese is also a really good way to train your brain for learning other languages. Because Mandarin Chinese is quite different to English, once you know how to speak Chinese, learning languages like Spanish, German and French will seem very easy compared to learning Mandarin Chinese!

Take this course, wow your Chinese hosts with your Mandarin Chinese, and make the most of your time in China!

1. Crash Course Chinese Introduction: Hello. My name's Frances and I have been living and working in China for the last seven years. I'd like to teach you Mandarin Chinese. Now people think about Chinese and they think it's just this incredibly difficult, virtually impossible language to learn. The truth is that if you learn it in the right way, it's actually quite easy. And that's what I'm gonna teach you in this course. So this is a survival Chinese course. So if you are thinking about visiting China or thinking about moving to China, this is gonna be perfect for you. It's also going to be suitable for you if you are back at home. But you receive Chinese visitors and you want to impress them with Chinese. Or if you are starting to study Chinese and you want to kind of get off to a fast start. This course has over 50 short videos divided into 10 different units. Each unit has downloadable materials so you can study by yourself on do a short test so that you know exactly how you do it. Millions of people come to China every year from all around the world, and unfortunately, the vast majority of them. Don't learn a word of Chinese before they come. Now, by taking this course, you're gonna be setting yourself out from that crowd and you're going to be making the most of your time in China. 2. Welcome! : so thank you very much for deciding to take this course on Dwell Comm. Over the next few videos, I'm going to give you an overview of exactly how Chinese works how it's kind of built on. After that, we're going to start talking about the survival skills. If anywhere, along the way you run into a problem is anything you're not sure about, what, you just have a general question. Please feel free. Teoh, send me a message and I'll do my best to get back to you as quickly as possible. 3. What are Characters?: Okay, so first of all, let's talk about characters. So characters are like the building blocks of Chinese, and each character is represented by a drawing on. It has a simple meaning. Okay, on what we can do is use those on, put them together with other characters with other simple meanings and create words. So we're gonna have a look at an example. The first example here is character twe TWE. Now what that means is to push something to push it again. And the second character here is sure Sure. Okay. And that means late. So if we put these two together, push and late, what we get is the word for postpones something so like postpone a meeting. Let's not do the meeting today. Let's do it tomorrow. We have pushed the meeting till later we have postponed it. Okay, so that's kind of how you can use these characters as building blocks to make words and phrases and whole sentences. So each one of these characters is created by a series of strokes by a pen or traditionally by a brush. We're not gonna cover that in this course, but if you are interested and there are a lot of resource is online. Andi. There's also very useful app, which I'm gonna do a video on on. Be able to see that later. In this course called Play Co. Blake was a dictionary and also helps you to study Chinese. And in Play Co. You can learn how to have to write these characters. So there's no such thing as an alphabets in Chinese. That was the first. My first question when I arrived in China was okay. How do I learn the alphabet? There isn't an alphabet. What? There are something like 50,000 of these characters on a lot of people hear that and say, Oh, my God, is 50,000 like, there's no way I'm going to go ever be able to learn that The good news is that you don't have to. Most people use a few 1000 okay, on in this course, we're only gonna learn around about 100 a few more than 100. So it is possible to learn Chinese without learning these characters. You can just learn how to say the phrases that we're going to cover, and you know how to. I understand that when you hear them, and you're gonna, you know, to some degree, get the same effect. This is a survival Chinese course. So if you are sitting at the airport right now on your way to China and you time is really , really sure, then maybe characters are not for you or at least right now, No. But if you are kind of working in advance in your your thinking about building foundations , for Chinese, it's a very good idea to learn the characters because the characters are the foundation. They are the basis of the language. Everything else is based off of the characters. So I really suggest that if you are taking a sort of longer term view to Chinese that you do learn them. But you don't 100% have to. You can get by without 4. What is Pinyin?: So let's talk about pronunciation. So to help us to figure out what exactly this bunch of squiggles actually sounds like there is a system called opinion. Now what opinion does is represent each character in letters that, you know, non Chinese speakers can understand and can replicate. So, for example, the two characters that we looked at in the last video twe and sure, which, of course you remember means postponed something so that 1st 1 twe is t u I. So that is opinion representation of that character. Okay. And the 2nd 1 sure is C h. Okay, so we have to be a little bit careful with opinion because it doesn't exactly map on to English. So say, if we were to look at this without having heard it, you might say to e to each e something like that and obviously that's not correct. So there is for each one of these like t you and I c h i. There is a fixed way to pronounce it as we go through the course. I'm gonna introduce ah, lot of different characters to you on Day three. Character. I'm also going to give you the opinion and most importantly, I'm also going to tell you how that opinion is pronounced. Okay? And it's very, very important that when you see the pinion, you also listen to it on. Do you remember exactly how it's pronounced? Not just kind of what it looks like. We'll look at one more example, which is the word for money in Chinese, which is U N. It's like the word foot for dollars off the pounds. Okay, so that opinion is why you a n on again? You might look at that and think, How is that you an or you are? Actually, it's u. N. So the opinion can be a little bit misleading, but it's cats and in perfect system, but it's the best system that we've got. So the one other thing to remember about opinion is that it can be kind of a crutch. It's not something that you should say. Well, the characters look very difficult, so I'll just learned opinion instead. Actually, each selection of letters like TWE and like sure, can be used for a number of different characters. So if you see just that TWE or just that sure written down, there's no really await and no which of maybe 10 different characters and consequently 10 different meanings this opinion is talking about. OK, so what some people do is kind of come to China Sea opinion. What that looks easy and just learned opinion and ignore the characters. It's not a good idea, definitely. If you're going to learn, to write and to read, learn the characters, the characters are the foundation. Opinion is just a way to understand how those characters are pronounced. 5. What are Tones? : so each character in each opinion representation of that character also has a tone attached to it. So tone is the way in which you say that character. So it was five of them were gonna go through them. Now, when you use the example of M a opinion which is pronounced math math. Okay, so the first tone is it goes across, it sort of stays at the same the same level. So it's my ma doesn't get up, doesn't go down, just stays the same. My second tone goes from lower to higher, my ma. OK, so the 1st 1 My 2nd 1 the 3rd 1 goes from kind of a high thing down and then back up again . Sort of like a roller coaster. Ma Ma. The 4th 1 starts high and goes low Mah mah, And then the 5th 1 is little sort of soft. One at the end is also sometimes called the soft town. And that's just like that. So that's usually thrown on a kind of the end of a word or the end of a sentence did it into did Emma Okay, so quick. Review 1st 1 my 2nd 1 march 3rd 1 march 4th 1 5th 1 okay. And each of those is gonna have, like, a different meaning. So the way that it works is you have a character, for example, the ones that we looked at first of all, twe and sure so twe it has the character. It has opinion representation to you, I and as part of the pinion you get the kind of the representation of what tone that is. So this twe is just going across twe So that's a first time and then the 2nd 1 Sure, sure, that's going from low to high. So that one is the second time. Okay, so five towns Ma, Ma Ma Ma is very important to learn the tones. When you learn that character and you learn opinion, it's not something that you should really kind of push off until later because it's like the equivalent in English of saying OK, I know the word, the word table. I've seen it written down. I know it's t a b l e, but I'm not gonna learn exactly how to pronounce it. And then later you say, Can I put something on this table? You've got the pronunciation wrong and people are not going to understand. So to properly learn a word in Chinese, it's important to learn what the character looks like. Andi, but it means, of course, how you use it on. Also learn what Tony is, and when you learn the turns and you get them right, it is very easy to learn. But it's gonna make your Chinese much more authentic. Andi much easier to understand. There's nothing worse than you know, having a word that you know, and you know what it means, you know to use it. But you can't exactly remember the tone. And so people are not understanding what you're saying. OK, tones, very important toe. 6. Hello, Goodbye: Hi, everyone. So the first thing we're gonna cover is very simple. We just gonna say hello. I'm going to say goodbye. So hello to characters. The 1st 1 is knee. And that means you on the 2nd 1 is how so? That's quite a deep how it's kind of a the bottom of your throat half on. That means good. So Ni Hao means you Good. But really what it means is Hello. So first of all Ni Hao. Now when you're saying goodbye as also two characters, the 1st 1 is Xai Xai in opinion is dead a I But there's also kind of a hidden d sound there . So don't say Zai. It's more like Zai Zai Jian. So the second character there is yet first ones I second. What it means is goodbye. Okay, so one more time How do we say hello, Ni Hao? And how do you say goodbye? Okay, everybody 7. Thanks, You're Welcome: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna learn two very important things. Number one had to say Thank you. Number two had to say you're welcome. So thank you. First of all in Chinese is CFCs. CSE. So that's two of the same character on the way that's pronounces siete. So the 1st 1 is a four town, so it's going down, and then the 2nd 1 is a soft, so that's kind of like an afterthought. CSU CSE Okay, so that means thank you. On your welcome is three characters, so that's QWERTY. So cruel actually means no or not and will see that a lot throughout the next few videos. And curtsey is polite. So it's like saying, Oh, you don't have to be so polite like No need to thank me, that kind of thing. So means you're welcome. Okay, Bull Curci. So the second to their r and C cuts certain woman time. Thank you is sees here and you're welcome because 8. Me, You and Stu (Talking about People): Okay, so in the next couple of videos, we're gonna be talking about people and actually in Chinese, this is a lot easier than it is in English. In English. You've got I and me. You've got a he on him. She and her in Chinese. It's much more straightforward. So first of all, I on me, there's just one word which is war war. So that's the third turn. It goes down and it comes back up again. And then the 2nd 1 is you have already seen this when we looked at the word Hello. So hello is Ni Hao So that first part me also 1/3 need. That's the word for you. So I walk you, me and then the last one. Is he she and it All of those have the same pronunciation. So they are all tax, which is the first time goes across car Andi It's not quite as simple as other because they all have their own character for he for him, for she or for her, on top for it. Okay, so quick review. I is war you knee on. He she it, huh? 9. Us and Them: So in the last video we saw how to talk about people. But those there any other individual people I you and he she and it If we want to talk about multiple people like we like all of you and they it is very, very easy way to do that. Well, we have to do is learn one extra character. So that extra character is men Men on the way that we work this the way that we construct the idea of For example, we we take the word for I and we add this word men. So it's war men with the IRS. War on the world for kind of a group of people is men. So together war men means week or us. Okay, so now I'm gonna give you a little puzzle. The word for you is me on The word for a group of people is men. So how do you say all of you? So the answer is neat. Men need men. So it's you, his knee and men. His group of people said, demon Now last question. How do you say they or them to the world? For Hetian? It is so the with the day and them should be Taman Tom. And so quick review we owe us is woman you all of you Group of you is Neiman on. They and them is coming. 10. Mine, mine, mine: Okay, Now let's talk about how we say things like my and mine, yours and yours in English. Is this huge list again? It's really complicated. And in Chinese, once again, very simple. All you need to do is learn one character, and that character is stuff. So that's one of those building blocks that we've been talking about on. What you do is add it to a person like that in the last video, and you put those two things together and it turns into saying like It's mild, it's your it's our So let's have a look at what? If you want to say my way, would say, We'll take the word for I war and we add this war and that means my So let's learn a thing so we can say my something. Eso The word for coffee in Chinese is very simple. It's Cathay Kath Day, so if you want to say my coffee, you can say Water cafe, water cafe just I this duck and then the thing. What a cafe. So that's my Now let's think about how we say you're so we'll take the word for you, which is me way. Addis need that means your on your coffee would be. I need a cafe needed cafe So my coffee cafe your coffee Need a cafe? Let's think about Let's quickly go through the rest of them because this structure is very simple, very easy. Once you understand that you can construct any of the other people on say, it's their coffee. It's our coffee. It's all of your coffee. So quick test for you. How would you say his coffee? Remember the word for he? What for? He is So we had that tact and dust Cada another with coffee cafe. So his coffee patio cafe Now last one. Let's think about all of your coffee set. What is the word for all of you? All of those? All of you people, That is me ments men. So we have Neiman. We have Namenda. That means your all of your on what? The coffee cafe. Even decaf Namenda cafe. Okay, so remember, you just take the person and this dust on the thing and you don't 11. The Good, the Bad and the Delicious: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna look at really important word in Chinese, which is how, how and how you've already met that one before. If you remember back to the first video when we looked at how to say hello. Hello. How do you remember how that directly translates to me is you? And how is good? So we're gonna look at the different ways that we can use this word. How? Which means good. So the 1st 1 is to say something is like, good, really good. And that's 10 heart 10. How? Okay. And how that means. It's very good. Really good. Okay, if you want to say something is bad or not Good, we're going to use that word food, which is like a negative. No, not on. And we can say boo how that means that No good. How? Okay, Andi one very, very useful One is if we are eating something people gonna ask us is a good how does it taste? And we can say how sure. How? Sure. So that sure means eat. So it's literally good to eat of what it actually means is, like, really tasty. Really delicious. Okay, So how sure. And be careful of the pronunciation of that. Sure when you do, Sure. You have to put your teeth together. Okay. Just like you're eating. Okay? It means sure when you say Sure, you have to put your teeth together. OK, so quick. Review the word. How means good deforestation? Things Very good. And how If you want to say it's not good Oh, how And if you want to say this thing is really tasty, how sure? 12. To Be, Or Not To Be : Okay, so we're gonna learn a very important which is the verb to be. So that would be like, I am you are he or she or it is again in Chinese. All of those, um, are is come out as one word, which is sure, Sure. Okay, be careful of the pronunciation. So when we see that there's the opinion words that end in I that means that you have to kind of clench your jaw together. We saw that with the word Sure, which means to eat on this one. Sure. You also kind of keep your jaw, Keep your teeth clenched. Okay. So sure means, um is up. And if you want to say hi, um, we're going to use the word I and then at this shit, So I am a war. Sure, sure. You are just the same. But we change i to You need? Sure. I mean, sure, he or she Or it. Time shirt. Tom. Shoot. Okay on. And this is how we can say our name. We can introduce yourself using this. For example, I would say washer friends or my Chinese name, I would say worship full ran. I have a Chinese name. I didn't have a Chinese name for the 1st 5 years that I was here. And then someone said You really need to get a Chinese anyway. Well, sure. Franciso was your foreign. Okay, so you say I am. And then you can give your name. Okay. Washer name. So quick. Review the word Sure in Chinese is the verb to be on. If you want to say I am well sure you are knee sure on he or she it it's shirt. 13. This and That (Super Useful!): Okay, So in this video, we're gonna look at possibly the most useful survival words that you will ever learn in any language. And there's a little kind of a story behind this. Andi, I hope you'll indulge me a few minutes to tell it. So I had a few friends who lived who I lived with in China. Andi They were in China for a while, but it never really kind of went for the language. They only knew a few words. And Ni Hao see easier on the altar knew this word on whether we're gonna learn in today's video. This wood is Jigga and basically what it means is it means like this one before you can also mean that one and the situation they're going to use This is basically any situation, but particularly if you're in a shop or restaurant on, do you want to say Okay, I want this one that one and I want that one. I don't want that one. And you say jigga jigga chicka chick. Just write that down. That's good. Tikka chicken. Okay, so it really is quite useful is a very useful survival thing. And actually, these three friends of mine. I found it so useful that when it came time for them to leave China, they wanted to kind of take something away as a memento. Andi, What? They did waas. They got a tattoo. Each of them got exactly the same tattoo. Same place on the wrong on the tattoo. Said, do you go? So I think that's a pretty good indicator of exactly how useful they found it. Um, So if you I think if you take one thing away from this whole course, remember that word, it means that one or this one, that one, this one. 14. Question Time: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna learn a really useful hack for asking questions. Okay, So all you really have to do to ask a simple question, Chinese is make a statement and then add this character must at the end. And that turns that statement, for example, in statements, this is my copy into a question. Is this my coffee? Okay, so way. Just have toe this month at the end. So let's build that sense. Okay, so let's first make the statement statement. This is my copy. To say this is who would say Just sure. Sure. It's not the same jury from Jigga. Ok, sure. Sure sure is the to be sure. Sure. Then the next character is much water. What? Your shoe water. And if you want to say, this is my coffee Joshua Water Cafe Joshua Water Cafe. Okay, so that's the statement. This is my coffee. Stay away. This is my coffee. But if you're not sure if that's your coffee you're gonna add at the end. And that makes it instead of this is my coffee you change it to. Is this my coffee? So juicy? What it can famous. Just shoot What? That cafe MMA secure that math at the end. And that means that it becomes magically a question 15. Can you...? : I guess in this video we're gonna learn a really important survival question. Okay, Andi, the first thing to say is I'm not going to tell you what the question is. We're gonna listen to the question in Chinese and they're gonna break it down, piece by piece. And then hopefully by the end, or maybe somewhere in the middle, you'll have figured out the meaning. Okay, so first of all, let's hear the question in Chinese. So the question is, Nick, wish William Wynne Newquay Schwalier in wind. So festival. Let's look at the first on the last one because we already know those. The 1st 1 is me. Me. And that means you on the last one is math which, as we just saw, turns a statement into a question. Okay, so me and ma you something Something, something something questions. So let's look at the things in the middle. So the way, way. So that's 1/4 town on that means can. So it's a very particular type of the word can, though it's more like have the ability to do something kind of a mouthful. So Ni Kwei means you have the ability to do something like you have the ability to fly, You can fly, you can speak another language. Okay, so I need quick now. The third character there is Schwartz is the first time Schwartz and Schwartz means speak or talk or say Okay, So those 1st 3 together, Nick Waysh war means you can speak or you have the ability to speak. So I wonder if you can guess what the fourth and fifth characters are. Fourth and fifth characters. You know, when you know when means English. Okay, so you went. That is the word for kind of England. And when is the word for language? So its English language, the language of England, English altogether. Newquay Schwartz. You, Nguyen is this statement. That means you have the ability to speak English. You can speak English, and then remember, we have the money at the end. You wish would win win, MMA. So the mat turns a statement into a question. So the whole question is, can you speak English? And obviously that's a very, very useful question for you to be able to ask. Okay, so there's two possible answers. Let's look at those. First answer is walkway, walkway and that means, yes, I can. Yes, I have the ability to speaking. So you may hear that one more likely you'll hear the 2nd 1 which is more way. What bull way? Remember that book is a word that means no or not. So I not can basically I can't walk through. That means I can't do that more boo Aishwarya Nguyen. I can't speak English. Okay? Quick review. So the question is Quechua yin Juanma can speak English. And the answers walkway. Yes, I can. We'll pull quick. No, I can't. 16. Numbers 0-5: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna talk about numbers and the numbers are really important. If you're visiting China or you moving to China, I just think about talking about money, talking about time. If you don't have to send numbers, it's gonna be fairly challenging. So we're going in this video. We're gonna look at zero through to five. Let's start with 00 is Medium Neil. A second toe one more time once is e E. It's real simple, really easy to Mother gets just one line across like that. So if you're looking at the character, really, really, to is a bit more complicated, because there are actually two versions off, too. So the 1st 1 is the one that we use for most situation numbers, phone numbers, dates, things like that. And that is our It's 1/4 term, so it's going down. Are can make a pirate are the other version of two is used when we want to off something like two apples. There are two apples in my pocket. I have two keys. Okay, So when we want to talk about two off something who say younger Bianca, that means to off something. Okay, so you consider the Anger Cafe means two copies. Three is Sam son. So that's again really easy to remember. Just look at the three. Count them three lines. Sand four is slow. So So it's going down now that one is one of those those pronunciations in Chinese, where you kind of your clumping your jaw together and saying it through you through clenched teeth. So, like that and five is, that's the third time. Get down and up. Okay, so let's go through them again. 01 E two is our three is Sand Boys and five. 17. Numbers 6-10: So in the last video, we looked at zero through to five. And this time we're gonna go six through to 10. Now, the interesting thing about Chinese is that there's a method for counting all the way from one through to 10 on one hands. Okay, so 12345 is just the same as you and I would do it. 12345 But whereas we would probably go, uh was 6789 and 10 in China, there's a way of doing it. Just one. Except we're going to learn that as we learn these words for six through 10 So six is Leo Leo. Now that looks in opinion like it should be. You should be an who sounded the end, but actually it's not. It's an o sound of the end. Leo Leo on the hand gesture that is this. OK, deal. So that's 67 is C See, So that one is a first term. See on hand gesture Is this see? Kind like a snake. Okay, eight is critical. What eight is bath by first time. And you can remember that because it's kind of like a good looks like a gun. Back, back, back like that. Nine is Jo Jo, and that's 1/3 time Goes down. Enough, Joe. I mean, finally, 10 is sure, sure, and 10 is a clenched fist, although don't shake your clench fist. Sure, you'll also see a hand gesture like this one, for sure. That's okay. So let's quickly review. Six is live seven t 89 Joe and 10 Sure. 18. Numbers 11-19: Okay, so now we're familiar with the numbers. Zero through to 10. And then now we're gonna look at 11 through to 19 eso We actually already have all of the buildings, walks, all the pieces that we need to go from 11 to 19. Let's look at 11th. 11 is just a combination off the number. Work for 10 on the world for one. Okay. Said what 10 is sure on the word for one e. So together 11th is 10 1 Jennings she on that logic goes all the way through to 19. So, for example, 12 is sure. Remember the word to our No. 10 is ships 10 to Shar. So given that the number 43 is san, how would you say 13 13 is sure San 10 3 Shu san Wal Mart test being How would you say 17 17 years? Should t should see 19. Multiples of 10: So now that we're familiar with everything from zero through to 19 let's take a look at 2020 is slightly different. So 20 is the weather we construct. It is we take the number two on the number for 10th and put them together. OK, so it's kind of like two sets of 10 to multiples of 10. So the number two is our on the number 10 is sure. So 20 years, our shoes are sure okay. And that logic goes all the way through from 2030 40 50 and all the way up to 100. So, for example, 30 is the number for three on the number 10. Sure, so 30 is censure. So remember, we take the first number, that's gonna be the multiple, and then we take 10. Can you tell me what is the number? 4 50 50 is bullshit on one more the number 4 80 basher 20. Numbers 21 and Up: So in our journey through from 0 to 99 the last thing that we have to do is look at the numbers in between say, 20 and 30 things like 21. OK, so this one is under a little bit more complicated. It's gonna be three characters, but good news is we already know. So 21 is just the word for 20 on the word for one. So the word for 20 is are sure in order. One is 21. Are she are she on? The same logic goes along So 20 to 10 the number for 20 our shoes on the number for two are 20 to our show are So now they understand the logic. Tell me, what would 23. 23 is our ships our ships on? Let's make it a bit more difficult, What with the number 4 31 b. Okay, so remember when we're making those the big numbers 2030 40 both within the multiple and then we take 10. So 30 is Sancho. I never want to say 31. We had the one at the end San she Sanchez. Now a couple more tests or give me 55 55 55 is sure Andi. Um Okay, Most difficult. One of all, 99. 1990. Joshi Joe. 21. Numbers 100: Okay, So when our journey through numbers, we've come from zero all the way up to 19 9 on The next logical step for us is to do 100 so that the word for 100 in Chinese is e by E bye. So that would by is the word for 100. He is one. So he buys 100. We want to say 200 say our by our by and the logic goes on my back. So 300 is sand by 400 survive on so, so quick test. What would 800 100 die? Bye bye bye. On that by is a good OK, that's the easy part. Then it gets a little bit more complicated. So we're gonna look at 101. Okay, so you might think that 101 would just be the word for 100. And then the word for one. Unfortunately, it's there is slightly more complicated. We have to add one character in between. So 101 is e binding reviling. Remember that lean is zero. So it's like 100 0 and one okay on the same goes through from hundreds through to 109. So, for example, 100 to be binding. Our so 100 by zero to R E biting are so 103 would be he pilings Sam reviling so. 22. Numbers 110: So now we don't have to go from 100 through 209 less like 100 and 10. 110 is the word for 100 by and then it's the word for one set off. 10. Remember when we looked at 2020 is like to multiples of 10. Well, this time it's just one multiple of 10 e by e sure by E. Sure Okay, so 101 more. So when we get to 120 that would be e by our Sure so the number 400 number 20 130 by sand share again on the logic goes on like that, so could test 160 150 Should be E by Leo Shirt by Lio Sha on much more difficult one. Let's do 300 on day 3300 and 30. That would be sand by his 300 sand by sand shoe. So 330 Sundby censure 23. Eating Pizza: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna look at a really important phrase. Something that you use a lot when you got to China on that is I want something. Okay, so there's a number of ways to set this. We're gonna choose the easiest, the most simple one. So, festival Do you remember the word for I with the eyes War on the word for want is Yeah. Yeah. So that's 1/4 term. Yeah, just like our Yeah. Okay. So war. Yeah, means I want So we can say we are something like a thing, Like coffee or pizza or something like that. We can also add a verbal action after or yeah. So a few videos ago, we learned the word for eat. Do you remember what the word is? The word for eaters? Sure, sure. It's the first time. And that's another one of those ones where you clench your drawer together. Okay, So sure means eat. And if you say I want to eat, that would be war. Yeah, sure. War. Yeah, sure. I want eat. Okay. And then we can add something else after it. So let's learn the word for pizza. So the word for pizza's really easy Is PC Peace after that? P as South, both of which are first terms. So let's put it all together. The phrase I want to eat pizza, which is something very useful. I'm sure you'll agree. We should all know how to say that. Warrior. Sure PC More. Yeah, sure. Pizza War I? Yeah. Want sure to eat pizza pizza again One more time? Well, yeah, sure. Pizza. 24. How Much Is It?: Okay, so let's talk about money. So the first thing we need to know about money is the question. How much is it? Very important question. So first of all, let's learn how much how much is in Chinese door Shop door shower for that door means a lot . A lot of something on the shower means a little of something. So door shower, that's the word for how much. And then the last word, of course, is how much money. So the last word is Dorsch on CNN. So altogether door shots here means how much how much money does this thing, the way you can kind of remember that is that is literally translated as a lot a little money, just like a lot of little money. All my time door shouts do a shot yet. 25. Money Money Money!: Okay, so then expect me to talk about is how to describe the money. There are actually three words for this in Chinese. The 1st 1 is genuine. Renminbi is like the really official. Like if you're exchanging currency, things like that usually be. But everyday life I'm not really that common. The 2nd 1 is u N u N So if you look at the opinion, their opinion looks like it should sound sound like you and like an but actually that you a Ennis Prince U n Okay, so it's almost like the, um the United Nations U N That's a second time. Okay, so that one is kind of like saying dollars. So if something was $10 you'd say show you and show you okay, so fairly kind of commonly used. But the most commonly used one is the 3rd 1 So the 3rd 1 is quiet, quiet or sometimes quite CN quite CNN so quite means a piece like pieces of silver, quite quite damning pieces of money. So, for example, if you were to say it's 10 it would be shockwave or shock Weitzen, and that's the most kind of commonly used. Once it's like saying Bucks in the U. S or its like saying Quit, 10. Quit 10 bucks. It's kind of everyday use. Okay, so quick. Review the three ways to say it. Renminbi, U N and Quiet. Quite CNN. So quick. Question. If you were out on the streets, you wanted to use the most casual, everyday version of your Chinese and something was 100. How would you say that? You would say he by quite CNN e by quiet. 26. Time- Basics: Okay, so let's talk about time. So the first thing we need to know about when we talk about time is the word for oclock. So for example, three o'clock the weapon oclock in Chinese is D N D n. 1/3 turn on opinion is a little bit misleading. It looks like Dion, but it's actually pronounced like the letters D and N d n. Okay, so if we want to say three o'clock first, we use the word for tree, which is san on in the world for a clock, which is the end. Sandia. So quick test for you. If you wanted to say four o'clock, how would you say that? Do it before is sir four o'clock would be city and another quick test. What about eight o'clock? 88 o'clock would be bad. Okay, so now we know how to say oclock. What about if we want to say half past or 3 30? So the word for hearth in Chinese is ban ban as 1/4 down, it's going down. So the order here, you have to be a little bit careful. The order goes number of the hour and then the word four o'clock on then the word for half . So it's sand D. In fact, send the end back. So, for instance, if we wanted to say 4 30 we would say City and ban Church that word for four It's so Woodford Oclock is the end on the word for half is back Citi and Bank Okay, Warmer test 8 30 8 30 would be body and back body back. 27. Time- Minutes: because we've learned how to say Oclock, and we've learned how to say half past that the last thing we need to do is think about all of the times in between. So the way that this works in Chinese, we have to learn the word for minutes and hear the words per minute is then then show in Chinese that always goes from big to small. So if we wanted to say, for example, 10 past three way would first say the three o'clock and then after that we add 10 on the worth of minutes. But Brother, now Sandy and from the sandy in at the end means oclock in Santa's three Sandy in three o'clock and then it's 10 past three. So we say the word for 10 is sure. Sure on the word for minutes is Ben. Sure, Finn So altogether That's Sandy and Chef in that means 10 past three. Let's look at another example. If you wanted to say 20 past three, we would say again, Sandy in three o'clock and then the word for 20 is are sure our shoes on in the world, the minutes, then Sunday and our ship in okay, a bit of a mouthful, but what about if we wanted to say a Let's say 40 wanted to say 3 40 How would you say that ? So three party is sandy in search Your fen. Remember, the word for 40 in Chinese is like four and 10 foot together for multiples. Attempt Searcher on the Web for minutes His friend. So it's sandy and social fan. Okay, lets test. What if you wanted to say 5 10 10 past five? How would we say that would say Woody and Chef in So five oclock is Woody in 10 minutes. Chef in Woody and Chef in. 28. Morning: Okay, so the last thing we need to talk about when it comes to time is the different times off the day. Morning, afternoon and evening. OK, so first of all morning the word for morning in Chinese is zao shown zao shot so that first character desire it Can I got that hidden d sound before the Z czar on? That means early on Then the 2nd 1 is shown on again The opinion is a little bit misleading It looks like Siang but it's pronounced as shut like that Shut So all together that means morning So when we are describing something that's pretend like nine am a time in the morning What we first have to do is go from bigger to smaller So the bigger one here is the time of day It's the morning So we're going to say the word for morning power shut And then we're going to say the our nine oclock Jodi in. So if we want to say 9 a.m. we're gonna say Zeisha Jodi in so quick test area. If you wanted to say 10 a.m. how would we say that would say I should 29. Afternoon and Evening: Okay, so let's talk about afternoon. So afternoon. First of all, the word is sound on the first character. CIA is the word for down means under and here means after Andi. Then the word. The second character is as 1/3 term. And that means new presently after. Okay, so again, the same logic applies. We said the time of day first, and then we say the hour. So, for example, if you wanted to say three PM three in the afternoon, you would say CEO Sandy. Sunday afternoon three o'clock Sandy sale will send you. Okay, Quick test. What if he wanted to say four o'clock in the afternoon? That would be city in. So then finally we have to go into evening. So really, anywhere from about six PM onwards is considered evening. So the word for evening is one shot when shut. So it's not that word shun again and shown by the way, means on something. Would the first word there when that means late So it on the late time. Remember? Xuesheng was the word for morning examines early on. One shot is evening. Land means late, so I want to say eight PM in the evening, we would say one show bad one shot bad If want to say 10 in the evening 10 p.m. We would say one shark should yet one showing should yet. 30. To Have, or Not To Have: because now we're gonna talk about how to say have and don't have in Chinese. So the word for have is yo yo as 1/3 tone. And so let's make a sentence if you want to say I have on Apple So the word for Apple is Pinghu War ping war. So if you want to say I have an apple first, what we have to say is I war. So I have Roy. Oh, Roy! Oh, and then we have to say e girth means one off something he got, he got Royal iga. I have one off apple at the end. Royal Eagle Pingatore for more time Royo Iga Pinghu. Now, if you want to say I don't have something we would say Mayo Mayo. So that's the same Yo on this May in front of it is like, Don't or not or no. Okay, so warm mayo. And if you say if you want to say I don't have an Apple War male Pinghu war I mail don't have Pinguin. And the last thing we're gonna look at is a question. Do you have a okay? It is really easy. You've actually already learned all of the words for this. So in Chinese, if you want to say, do you have a You just add the word for you. Take the word for half on the word for Don't have putting together OK, so that would have yo the ones that don't have mayo. So if you put together your mayo, that means do you have a Andi? Let's say, for example, you want to say, Do you have an apple, your mayo, eager people? Or you can say your mail. Pinghu. Okay, that means do you have? 31. Ordering Food: Okay, so now let's talk about being in a restaurant. I'm gonna do two things. The first thing we do is ask for the menu. Ask them if they have a menu on, then we're going to have a look on and tell the waiter that we are ready to order. So first of all, the word for menus. Two characters and it is side and side down. So tight means like dishes. Food is also used in the world for vegetables. So it's things related to food. And Dan is a list of something so sedan means literally the list of the foods that you have . Eso may Okay, now, in the last video, we looked at how to say, Do you have something? Do you remember how to say that? Do you have is your mayo? So if you want to say, do you have the menu weaken, Say, your mayo tied down your mail tied down? Do you have the menu? And then when we've looked at the menu, we're gonna be ready to order on the way that you tell the waiter that you are ready to order is you're going to say I want to order. So if you remember, I want we've already talked about that one eye is war on. Want is Yeah, warrior. Well, yeah, I want. And the word for ordering is the end, the inside. So that d n is one that we've seen before. We've seen it, actually. About time. It's the same character, but an entirely different meaning. Okay, Chinese is, you know, gets complicated sometimes anyway, the anti so that means to order the end is like, select and sigh Is the food okay? So, warrior, the inside means I want to order One more thing to note is that that word side it means like food and vegetables. It looks kind of like chi or chai or something like that when it's written opinion, but the noise is almost like a t s. That's how it sort of comes out of your mouth. Side side like a t s sound. Okay, so way out the inside 32. Knife, Fork, Spoon and Chopsticks: Okay, so we're in the restaurant. We've successfully ordered the food. Good job. Now we need to think about how we're gonna eat it. What cutlery? All implements of needs. The first word we need to know is chopsticks. So the word chopsticks is quiet. Quiet on the word for use, as in used chopsticks is young. Quiet. Okay, young, quite young and quite are for And that is like a soft tone at the end. Now the weight of my ask er's Can you use chopsticks or do you have the ability to use chopsticks? So it's gonna ask you, Nick, way young Quiet, Zuma. No way. Young quiet summer. So that way is that word we've seen it before, Have the ability to do something. And then the math at the end is a question. So anyway, young quiet sama means can you use chopsticks? Do you have the ability to use chopsticks? And you can respond by saying if you can walk way Yes, I can walk away Or if you can't walk way, will you wait? Okay. So anyway, on quantum a walkway. Well, boo hoo! Now, if you can't use chopsticks, then you can ask for a knife and a fork or a spoon. So let's learn those words as well. So the word for knife is now. Now we can see opinion. That's the A and the oh, which you've seen in a lot of places. How, for example, so is that our sound? So how is knife? And it's the first time on the word for fork is Chad's Chad's Okay, that's that same zip that we saw. It's a soft tone that we saw with Quiet. Okay, Chad's of Dow is nice and chancer. His fork on, then for spoon spoon is second tone. It's shouts shouts. Okay, so knife how fork chances and spoon shouts it. Now let's test. Can you remember how to say, Do you have us? If you can, How would you say, Do you have a knife? I would say You're Mayo Dow, your mail down. Do you have your mail knife now? Romeo Doll 33. Meat, Fish and Rice: Okay, We're gonna talk a little bit about food on. First of all, we're gonna look at some different types. So, protein, we're gonna look at meat, meat and fish. So first of all, the word for fish is you. You. That's a second term. You okay? Just one. Just one character. Very easy. You all right? Now, let's look at some of the meats. So first of all, starting with chicken chicken is G throw Jiro two characters That 2nd 1 row. We're gonna be seeing that a lot. That is the character for for meat, for flesh. Okay, with apologies to my vegan friend, you know? So the character Dief is specific to chicken G row is chicken as in chicken meat again. Next one is beef, which is new row. You row So that that word for beef new is a second term and you'll see that it's the same I you opinion as the word for six. Look, I'm doing a hand gesture for six, Okay? So it's likely you it looks like new, but it's actually knew new. Okay, Neo row is beef again. The road is meat. Okay, The next one is pork Jewell row Juro. So ju ju dro you wrote and very often on a menu in China. If you see something that just has that character ro, then it's referring to pork. Quite often they don't bother putting in the Jew because pork is like the standard meat. Okay, a couple more lamb is young ro young row so young. Is she poor rams? Oh, uh, lambs as well. Young unenrolled me, young ro. And then finally one that I really suggest that you read carefully learned the character for Because if you're like me, you don't want to end up accidentally eating this one. Go ro, which is dark meat. Go Growth. You don't find it in too many places. But you will see if you spend enough time in China. So gold row is dog meat. Go. It's done on Drove me. Now just a couple more things that you'll need to know from the menu in a Chinese restaurant. So one of them is rice s. Arises me fan me fat. If you just see me by itself, you probably won't see that on the menu. But me is like uncooked rush me fan means rice that is cooked, and it's white rice. Usually OK. The sun is rice and then noodles. You'll either see this as men if it's part of an overall dish. So, for example, chow me n Charmian is fried noodles. Andi, That's actually where the word chow mein comes from. Chairman, I guess, is a mispronunciation off champion, which is the correct Chinese pronunciation. Okay, it's a child, me in fried noodles, and you may also see noodles as Menti are. That's the full official name of Noodle Mantia Rice. Me fan noodles could be in or it could be Manti. 34. Booze and Grammar: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna talk about alcohol. I'm Gramma. Two of my favorite things to combine. So first of all the grammar. So there's a concept that we have to kind of familiarize ourselves with in Chinese, which is the concept of measured words. So measure word in English would be something like a cup off coffee. So that cup tells us how how much coffee we're getting or what form the coffee is gonna come in now. These are all over the place in Chinese. There's there's load, a different one. Everything has its own measure words. And to be honest, like you don't need to know most of because there is a very useful kind of catchall measure word which covers a lot of those situations. And that is good. He's one. Good. Is this measure would? Okay, So, for example, you've heard me say eager ping war. That means one measure word apple said one apple and apple. Okay. However, there are a few measure words which are kind of worth learning. And that's what we're gonna talk about in this video. Eso The first we're gonna learn is bottle a bottle. One bottle five bottles off something, so the word for bottle is pin pins. So if you want to say one bottle would say, Keep in E. Ping Ping is a second time. Okay, let's let the while we're here. We'll learn the word for beer. Beer is P. Joe P is second tone, and Joe is that on that. Joe is one of those ones. Like meat has always used Rose. Those used for Meet Joe is always used for alcohol. Okay, P Joe is being set E P. A. P joe means a bottle of beer, one bottle of beer. Okay, if you want to say five bottles of beer, which you may well rule Ping P. Joe. So we changed the number of start, which ended two. Number five and we say pin five buckles. P J P J. Five bottles of beer. Okay, so if you're not a beer drinker, let's talk about wine. So why would usually come in glass? Although sometimes I like to drink it out of like a a mug. It's quite quite nice on a winter's day to get out of a month. Anyway, you're here to hear about my drinking habits on So the word for a glass or cup in Chinese is they? They say one would say he's a one cup e bay on the word for red wine is quite easy. Red wine is Hong Joe, so that sure, we already know that alcohol the same P. Joe. But the Hong is red. Okay, so e bay Hangzhou means literally means one cup red alcohol. But really, what it means is a one cup off red wine. White wine is a little bit more complicated. White one is by which is white puto, which means great. And Joe, which is alcohol. So white grape alcohol by puto. Joe. Okay, so one cup off white wine would be eBay by Put how, Joe okay or joining or three Sam Bay by Putin. 35. Spicy!: But this is one of the questions you're gonna get asked when you're in a Chinese restaurant in China. Is can you eat spicy food? Do you want to eat it? Do you like to eat it? Can you eat it? Okay, so let's look at that question. Can you eat it? So I'm gonna give it to you first, and then we'll break it down. So the question that you're probably here will be the white shirt llama. Quite sure. Llama So character by character, The 1st 1 is me, Which by now we know means you next one. We've seen quite a few turns its way, and that's have the ability to do something. Okay, so you have the ability to the next one is sure? Sure. Eat on, then. Finally, love. Quite sure that means you have the ability to eat spicy specific on the last character. Makes it a question. Okay. Do you have the abilities of eat spicy food in Equator Lima? So how do you answer that? Well, there's two ways depending on how confident feeling. If you want to say yes, I'm fine. I can eat spicy food way walkway. I have the ability to do so on. If you want to answer no simple quick. I don't have the ability to eat spicy food. Now there's a couple of other things that we need to look out. So we have spicy and we have kind of a little bit spicy. And we have completely without spice. So let's lend the border to learn the word for spicy, which is last median sort of mild. Spicy is way. Last way way is the first time in life is a four way lock That means the way means a little so a little spicy. And if you want completely without spice, that's last. Okay, so no spice. Okay, So if you, for example, wanted to say I would like medium, sort of medium mild, spicy, just a little bit of spice, you can say warrior way ladder. Well, yeah, way ladder So that at the end, turns this way lot into, like, a like an objective. OK, but don't worry about that. That's grammatical will deal with that in the next few videos. Okay, but it would be war. Yeah, way ladder I want. Well, that is a little bit spicy. Don't mix. Okay, so one more time, we are well 36. Check, please: So we come at the end of our meal on there. Just two more things that we have to do before we leave. So the 1st 1 is called. A waiter on the 2nd 1 is asking for the bill. So calling the waiter the word for waiter is full. For now, that means service on the U and means like a member of staff. So literally full U. N is serviced but actually means waiter Andi, I've been in China for a long term, and I've never ever in all of my time here heard that middle Wu being said it seems like people just squash it together and say for you. So if you want to sound sort of more authentically Chinese, forget about that middle room. Just just say four years now. The other interesting thing to note about this is that is, ah, quite a big cultural difference when you come to China, if you're in a restaurant and you trying to get the waiter's attention in the ways that we would do kind of back home by doing that or making eye contact with the waiter, you're gonna be waiting a long time because everybody just shouts for you. They shot the word for waiter on and then the waiter appears. If you don't shout, you're going to be at the back of the queue. Okay, so it takes a little bit of getting used to, but it's it's normal here. So it's one of those things that you have for us and then once the full year and has come over the word for the bill, you can just say the word for Bill. You don't need to say things like I would like the bill. Please, could you bring the bill, please? You said the word for Bill. That's two characters. And it is my Dan, my Dan. So that Dan we've already seen down is like a list of things you saw that in the world. Dan is a list on my is. What do you think? What is the What is the bill? The bill is a list off a list of things that you bought in the restaurant. So the word my means to buy to buy something. So my plan is the bill 37. Treating Someone : Okay, So the bills arrived on just one more question that we have to deal with the question of who will be paying. So splitting the bill is not especially common in more common for people to take it in turns to treat each other. So the word for treating someone is seeing, seeing as I say it is on me. So, for example, if I were to treat you, I would say what seen me what? Sing me. I will treat you. It's on me, okay? Or if I'm being quite rude, I'm saying, Now it's your turn. I would say it's you. Will you treat me more commonly? You'll say what, Cindy? 38. Hotels: Okay, let's think about hotels. So, first of all, it's learned the word for hotel was actually several words and journeys. We're gonna look at two of the most common one. First one is being in. Okay. And in the 2nd 1 is the end, Joe. So England Jodi. And none of those means hotel. Okay, so when we get to the hotel, we're gonna want to check in. Now. In English is quite easy. Check in and check out in Chinese. Not so simple, unfortunately. So the word for check in two characters you too, do you? So that both of them 1/4 term that drew means toe enter on day two means to live. So it's like saying I want to enter and live through June. So if you want to say I want to check in, we should know this one by now. Well, yeah. Ruled you war. Yeah. I want you to check it. We are rude. Okay? And when it comes to checking out its two entirely different characters so unfortunately, can't use anything that we learned for Check in. So check out is twe farm twe found TWE is fourth tone and that means to return something. We'll see that when we look at tickets in a few videos time but 20 is to return and fan is a room or house. So you're returning the room back to the hotel. So 12 found is to check out the last thing I want toe teach you in this video is how to say what time. So what time is GED? GED and again? We've already met before that the end is the same PN from Sandy in like three o'clock. But when we put the n with this ti, then it becomes what? So cdn is what time. And if you want to ask, what time do I check out what time is? Check out. You can say very simply. Cdn 12 JD and 12. Okay. What time? Check out one more time. Check in through to check out twice to West Hotel England. Judea 39. Meals : one of the things you might have to ask in hotel is whether or not they do breakfast, lunch and dinner. So let's learn the words for those three. So the word breakfast is Zach 10 out so that sand means meal on the czar is the word that revolting that the one before that was in mourning. So remember that Zao by itself, means early. So if we say it's our early sand meal, early meal breakfast lunch is equally kind of easy. We've already learned one of the characters from lunch. Lunch is so who is like noon midday can attend and sand meal midday meal lunch. Finally, when 10. When said when is late on San his male late meal. So then one of the questions you might want to ask you to the hotel is Do you have breakfast? So can you remember how to say? Do you have? Do you have his you'll NATO you may owe? So do you have breakfast for breakfast? Is what do you have? Is your mail your mouths out on your mail? 40. Go and See: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna look at two very important verbs and Chinese. One of them is Go on, The other one is Look at or see or watch or read. Okay, so the 1st 1 is go. The word for going Chinese is choo choo. So you have to be a little bit careful with the pronunciation death. It's not shoo shoo. Like, um, I chew my food. It's slightly different It subtly different pronunciation that she's choose. OK, so for example, if you want to say I go, it would be war to war to what I shoot. Go on. If you want to say I want to go, it would be royal Chew Well yeah. Shoot. Okay. I want for you now Quit test. Do you remember the word for hotel? I gave you two words a few videos ago. So one of those words is Jodi N Jodi n You don't England. England. Let's take Jodi. And if you want to make the sentence, I want to go to the hotel. How would you say that? It would be well you choose Jodi an well? Yeah. Shoot Jodi An okay. In the second World we're gonna look at is the verb for look and see. And for read and watch, this is very useful. So this one is can can It's 1/4 time. Andi, for example. We say I look at all I watch, I read War can war can. And again I want to read or I want to see Well, you can. Well, yeah, I can. Andi, let's do a quick test. Let's make a full sentence. Do you remember the word for menu? The menu is Dan side down. So let's say you've gone into a restaurant and you want to check out the menu and you want to say I want to see the menu. How would you say that we are can tied down or you can write down? 41. Asking on the Street: Okay, so in this video, we're going to learn how you can go up to someone in the street. Andi kind of stopped them and say, Excuse me, can I ask you a question? So first of all, let's let's look at that. Excuse me part. So there's no really kind of the direct translation of this in China. The way that you would say it is by saying Math handy, Mathrani. So that first part math and is a great word. It means, like annoying something that's annoying, or something that's like that bothers you. So math. And so the matter is, a second tone on the fan is a soft tone. And then the third part is, which means you so literally. This is, like, annoy you. But what it actually means is excuse me. Okay, math and me. And then when we want to say, Can I ask you a question? There's a phrase that we would use in this situation. Andi, that phrases were wings. Yeah, well, when you So the first part is war, which means I And then the 2nd 1 is when? 1/4 time. So when is the word for ask? Ask something. And then the last two. East. Yeah, we've met both of those characters. That's the e from the number one. And it's the CIA. From Seattle afternoon to Sammy's, like down. But when we put them together, what it means is like a little or for a short time. So the whole phrase always Yeah, well, when he shot means, Can I ask you a question? 42. Where is...?: in this video, we're gonna learn a really important survival skill which is asking where something is or where you can do something. Okay, First of all, let's deal with where you can do something. So the way that we say where can I is Zain algae? So the 1st 1 is Sigh and that's like there's no sort of direct translation of that into English. But that shows that we're talking about a location. Okay, so that is 4 to 0 and then the Nolly Nolly. Now, Lee, that means where Okay, so located where it's kind of what it means. Okay, So Dinah Lee is where can I And then we can add a verbal action after this. For example, if you want to ask, where can I buy a ticket? The word for buy a ticket is my people, my people So altogether. Where can I buy a ticket is finally my PR Finally, my Or if you want to say, where do I return? My tickets return? My ticket is tweet. Tweet So altogether. Where do I return my ticket? Finally. Tweet Pure Zayn Ali, 20 p. R. And then, if we want to ask where something is, for example, where is the train station? This is where the grammar gets a little bit confusing because we're going to save the thing first. In English, we say, Where is the train station? Where is the bus stop? But in Chinese, you say the place, and then you ask where it is. So if you want to say, where is the train station? We first have to say the word train station, which is quarter Jan quarter. John. Okay, so, quarter Jan Zainal Torture Jen's Finally. So we say the name of the place. And then we say that phrase, Where is it? Okay, court your gender. 43. Trains: Okay, so let's talk about trains. So I really recommend that if you do come to China on, you have to travel between relatively close cities. For example, between Beijing and Shanghai take a train because they're really modern, the very fast on and the train stations look more like spaceports. Then they do like what we imagine to be a train station. Anyway, let's learn the word for train on the word train station. So the word betraying is torture, torture, so that war is fire as the word for fire and sure is a vehicle. Now be careful. This sounds like the word for eat, but that's sure opinion. It's C H I on this word for vehicle is sure on. The big difference is that ensure for eat your teeth are together and ensure for vehicle train. Your teeth are apart. Your mouth is open. Okay, so one more time train is torture. And then for station. We just need to add one character. And the character for station is Jen John. Okay, so train station tortured Jan Quarter. Jen 44. Tickets Please!: Okay, so let's talk about tickets and train tickets in particular. So in this video, we're gonna learn the word for tickets, and we're gonna learn three actions related to tickets. OK, so first of all, the word ticket is okay, so that could be one ticket or could be 10 tickets. There's no S that goes on the ends to make it a plural. It's just okay, So if we want to buy a ticket, we've already met the word for by when we talked about getting the bill in the restaurant. Can you remember how we say the word for by so by is my my So buy a ticket is my house my p o. Okay. Now, if we bought a ticket online, Andi, then we have to go to the train station to pick it up. The word that we would use to pick up something is shoes gonna collect something? Pick something up. Shoe. That's 1/3 tone. An opinion. It's the same as the word for to go, which we saw a few videos ago. The word for to go is four. Turn it. Shoot on the word for collecting something off, picking something up is shoe. Okay, so collecting your ticket is to PR shoot PR. Okay. And then the final one is if we decided that we would bought the ticket. But we don't want to take that journey anymore. We want to return the tickets. So we've already seen this word as well. This is the word that makes the first half of the verb for check out at a hotel. Can you remember that one? What was the first half of that? So check out is 12 farm. Remember? That means, like, returned the room so that TWE is return. And so 20 p r means to return your tickets. Okay, So quick review is your ticket, and then my cow is to buy a ticket to PR is to collect a ticket that you've already bought on 20 p. O is to return ticket. 45. Passport: Okay, So one of the things that you have to know about being in China traveling in China is that for all kinds of things, you'll have to carry your passport not just for taking planes and travelling, but also for things like taking money out of the bank for buying train tickets. There's all kinds of situations. We have to take a passport. So in this video, we're gonna learn the word for passport. I'm gonna learn how to say, Bring your passport. We're gonna learn a common question that people will ask you about your passport. Okay, so first of all, the word for passport is Hujara who jar so that who is like identity and Jiao is like a picture. So it's your picture identity? Uh, who job. But those four times on the word for bring your passport carrier possible with you is die. I I just like to die die also afford. So carry your possible bring your possible is dying. Hujara. Guy who job. Okay, now there's one more thing that we have to do when it's a little bit grammatical. So I apologize in advance. But there's a character in Chinese which is and look often comes after a verb on what it shows. Is that that verb, for example, here to carry out to bring has bean successfully completed? Okay, so if you say would Diala Who job war Diala who job? That means I wore Diala is have successfully brought on who job Passport. It means I've brought my passport. I have my passport with me. Okay, So that is what we add to the end of a verb to show that that verb has bean successfully completed. You have completed the task. So then the question that people are gonna ask you is Have you brought your passport? Okay, so that will sound like this. Need dialogue? Who? Ujaama. The dialogue. Ujaama. So you dialer who job brought your passports and math is the question. So have you brought your passport? Do you have your passport with you need Kyla Ujaama. So if you want to say yes, I brought it. You can say dialer on If you haven't brought it, you can say may die may die so that may is the same may from Mayo. Like I don't have here is that I haven't brought it. May die 46. Medical Emergencies: Okay, so let's talk about what happens if you run into some medical issues while you're in China . So in this video, we're gonna talk about the work with Dr. We're gonna learn hospital. We're also gonna learn the phrase to see a doctor. Okay, so there's one character that is present in all of those three phrases, and that is the character e e. So that means, like medicine or or medical things related to the world of medicine. Okay, on in opinion, opinion is why I on it looks like it might be enough, but that y is kind of it's not really spoken silent. So it's just like the letter e again. And it's a first, so that eat means medicals. And then, first of all, hospital hospital is you. You so that u N is 1/4 time, and that means a place or a center. So medical place U N hospital. Okay, Now doctor also takes that way. E on Afterwards, there is Shung e Shang shung. So Xiang is like, um has many meanings. This is one of those words in Chinese that appears all over the place. But here it's like a learned person. Okay, So a medical learned person is a doctor. You showing the hospital, um, and Dr Young another phrase to see a doctor. Do you remember how to say, See or look at or what? Your meat that's can. So we just have to say, Can you shun can issue. So that means See, a doctor can teach young. And if you want to say I want to see a doctor, well, you can issue. 47. Airports: Okay, so let's talk about planes on the airport. So the word for a plane is Fadi faint. So I'm gonna give a little test here. Remember that Chinese is a very literal, descriptive language. I'm gonna tell you what the second character means, and I'm not gonna tell you the 1st 1 I want to get. Okay, So Fagih, the jeep is machine. So what kind of a machine is a plane? What could this they mean? I'll tell you, Faint means flying. So a plane is literally a flying machine. Okay? Satay is an airplane, and the word for airports is first of all, it takes that I see for machine. And then second character is Chan g charm teacher. OK, so chan is a word that means a big open space. This is also used for sports fields on guard, kid's playgrounds and places like that. Okay, so plain faint e on airport teacher. And then if we want to say, where is the airport? How would we say that? Remember if we're asking where a place is, we have to say the place name first, and then we use that phrase. Where is it? Okay, so First of all, we're gonna ask Where is the airport? Airport is okay, De Chung. And then where is it? Zain Sandy, Gi Chan's and Ali. 48. Subway: Okay, So so far we talked about trains and talked about planes were talked about bringing your passport. Let's talk about the subway. So the subways is usually if you're in a big city like Beijing and Shanghai is the best way to get around because you avoid the traffic on the subway actually goes everywhere, and they come every two or three minutes. So it's a very good subway system. Anyway, at the word for subway internees is BT so that he is 1/4 term and that means like the ground of the earth and then tear his third term there to be a little bit careful with the pronunciation of Tierra. It sounds like tea, like a cup of tea and air, Like I'm smelling the fresh air DTs Okay, that means something. And then to take the subway in Chinese, we actually use the word sit to sit on the subway. So the word per set is your jaw. So it's Jordi your DT. So if you want to say I want to take the subway Warrior George DT a warrior George, let's talk about the word for subway station. Okay, so we've already seen this word for station when we talked about train station. Do you remember how to say Train station? Train station is tortured. Jets torture jet. So that gem is the world s station. So subway station should be DTs Jack GTL gym. Okay. And if you want to ask, where is the subway station? So remember, the subway station is a physical place, so we put it at the start of the question. So we would say dth Jan Sanyal, DTs Jam Zainal. 49. Taxi: Okay, so let's talk about the last two ways of getting around in China. Taking a taxi, Andi going on foot. So first of all, I want to say that if you do come to China, I 100% recommend that you download an app called Dede Truth. That's like the equivalent of uber about China having English version very easy to use. So, yes, if you do come, definitely get that downloaded. If you for some reason haven't downloaded it, and you have to go out on hail a taxi on the street. Well, it let's learn a few words to help you do that. So the word for a taxi is shoot zoo chur shoot zoo chur so that sure, at the end we only met that one. That means vehicle That's the same as court Sure, which is fire vehicle or train? Okay, so sure is a vehicle. True. Zoo means like it's out and about, and it's available to be happy. Okay, so true culture is a vehicle that is out and about and available to be hired, or we would say, a taxi. OK, so that's the word for taxi. That's a physical taxi to take a taxi is only two characters to take a taxi. Is Dad Sure? So that's Centura. Vehicle on the data is sometimes means to hit on. If you take enough taxes, you'll probably end up wanting to hit some of them. But here, what it means is to to hail to stick your arm. A hail a taxi. Okay, dacha. So if you want to ask someone, where can I get a taxi? Where can I hail a taxi? Hail a taxi or get attacks? You take a taxi is an action. So that one's going to go at the end of the question. So first of all, we're going to say finally. Okay, Where can I Where do I finally, Dacha? Finally, Dr. Where can I take a look in? The last one is to walk to go on foot. So that is so, Joe. Joe is to go toe walk and blue Is the street so kind of walk on the street? Ok, so blue. That's 1/3 10 on 1/4. And if you want to say I want to go on foot, I want to walk. You can say William. So look or yards. Oh, 50. Introduction to Haggling: Okay, So over the next couple of videos, we're gonna learn a pretty important skill for when you come to China, which is haggling, negotiating so very often. If you go to a temple in Beijing, you go to a place like the silver market on the first price that they're going to give you is going to be just enormously higher than the actual price that you can get if you know how to negotiate. Okay, so it's not doing every place. You know, if you go to say h and air more, you go to a more established brand store. You're not going to negotiate. But in more informal settings like markets and places like that is definitely a good idea to learn how to negotiate. So in the next couple of videos, that's what we're gonna look at 51. Giving a Gift: I guess one of the most important verbs in Chinese is the verb to give to give something to give a gift. So that is gay gay. Okay, so it's 1/3 tone. So, for example, if you want to give a gift, let's say let's learn the word for gift. Gift is lead. Okay? He is 1/3 tone on tone is a photo Me. So let's say I want to give you a gift I want is a war. Yes, Give is gay. We are gay. I want to give you a warrior gamey, gamey And then a gift is a good way are gaining gaining me I want to give you a gift. So when we using that gay, it would be war, gaming, war, game me I give you or gay war you give me 52. May I...?: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna learn a very important word in Chinese, which is okay, Okay. I can't to third times now, what that means is can't. But you're probably thinking what we've already learned the way they can the world can is quite well, actually can has several different interpretations. And that would equate is the word that means, like the ability to do something like the ability to fly three ability to speak Chinese. Whereas curry is more like. Do I have your permission, Teoh? Would it be okay if I or is it possible to So let's look at an example. For example, if you want to say, can I buy a ticket to remember the word for buy a ticket is my mind. So if you want to the whole phrase can I buy a ticket? You would say curry my mama curry. My mama. So can I. My pr buy a ticket? Ma makes it a question. Okay. And there are two ways to answer this. The 1st 1 of course, is yes, of course. Of course you can have a ticket. So if you want to say yes, then the answer is Okay. Remember, there's not really a word for yes, in Chinese. Very often. You just repeat the okay. So, Kirky means yes, of course you can on if you want to say no. No, you can't. Then it's bouquet bouquet. Okay, So that Booth is No, I'm not. Okay, so don't say yes, you can. It is completely fine, Kirky. One said no. Of course. That's not OK, OK. 53. Getting Discounts: I guess in this video we're going toe put together the two phrases that we learned in the last two videos on We're gonna teach you quite a long but a pretty useful phrase. Okay, so the president learn is can you give me a discount? Okay, so in this, we're gonna use Kerr you for, can you? Is it possible to We're gonna use gay for to give? Okay, So first of all, can you cur you give me gay war So together co gay war. Now the word for discount is your coat. Sure. His second town and coke is four cook. So can you give me a discount? Curry Gay Watcher Co could gay one Sure coat to make it a question call you gave Georgia coma. Could get would your coma. So this is just one of the many ways that you can ask for a discount in a few videos. Time will look a different way. But remember, K, can you Is it possible to gay war? Give me Joe coma. A discount is impossible. Can you give me a discount? 54. Too Expensive!: okay. So many videos ago, Many moons ago we looked at a few different ways that you can affect on objective. So, for example, we were looking at how? Which means good way said, if you want to say very good, you would say and how and if you want to say not good, bad, you would say so now we're gonna look at one more way that you can sort of alter an objective. And that is to say something is to something, for example, too expensive. Okay, so the first of all the word for expensive is way quick. That's 1/4 quick. And if you want to say something is to something, we have to take the objective quay and we put a word before it, and we put a work after it. Okay, so the word before is Ty Thai, like tying your time. Okay, tie 40. So we say, time away. And then afterwards we add look, So we've already met that look. That's a look. That sometimes means that a verb is completed. But here it's just part of this whole phrase. So, Tig Layla, Tig Whalen means too expensive, or if you say for example, Tie Holla! How is good? Tie Heartland means. Oh, my God, That's too good. That's awesome! Okay, so too expensive. Tag weather. Awesome. Really, really good tie! Holla! 55. Big/Small, Fast/Slow: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna learn five really important objectives on We're going to learn different situations in which you might be able to use So the 1st 1 we've already learned the word for expensive, which is way. So the opposite of that jeep or inexpensive is pne pne. So that PN is second term e is for okay on again, Be careful of opinion. Opinion would have you say something like P and E, but it's not that it's p N e p any okay, you're going to say this is too cheap. I don't know why you would say that, but if you do want to say that type vanilla type E Anila that tie and love means something is to put the objective in the middle. Okay, so that's cheap and expensive. What about if we want to say big and small? So the word for big is no. Okay, so if you want to say something is very big, you would say and or if you want to say it's not big, you'd say Buddha, the word for small is see how see how. Okay, See our third. They want to say it's too small like you ordered a You've ordered a pizza and it's come out and it's only this size you could say Ty Si Allah Ty si Allah Too small. Okay, so the last two that we're gonna look at are the words for fast and slow. So the word for fast is quiet. Quiet. So you want to say very fast, That's quiet. Or you want to say to fast talk. Quite so this is actually quite a useful one. If you're in a taxi on the driver is going extremely fast. You can say Taik Wyler on the driver's gonna know. OK, these guys not comfortable with my Michael Schumacher esque driving, So that's fast on. The word for slow is also 1/4 time. So very slow and man or too slow time Mandela. So, for example, we're back in the taxi and you're late for your plane and you're on the way to the airport and the drivers going really, really slow. He's really sticking to the speed limit and you want a toe. Put his foot on the accelerator in, Say time, Mandela to slow. Okay, it's a quick review. Big, small, quick, quiet, slow on expensive, quick, cheap pne 56. A Little Bit of...: Okay, so let's look at a way of making requests. So first of all, let's think about asking for a discount. There's a second way to ask for a discount set of the first thing we need to learn is e d N e d n So that's eat as in one and TN that we've already seen from, like, sandy and three o'clock the anti to order food. But together E v en means a little a little something. OK, so if you want to say a little cheaper, you would say P any media pne is cheap on cdn is a little pne. OK, Do you want to say a little bigger dying? Okay, So if you want to ask the question can this thing be a bit cheaper? Can you make it cheaper? Can you give me a discount? He would say curly pne cdn ma copia needy Emma. Okay, okay. Is can or is it possible pne e d n a bit cheaper and mark the end makes it a question. Okay, p m e t Emma, So we can use it for negotiating for asking for discount. We can also use this in a number of different situations. Let's say that you're back in that taxi and the driver is going too fast. And you've already said tie quieter too fast. You can also ask him, Can you go a bit slower? How would you say that? You would say, OK, Manny D and MMA remember the word for slow? Is that so? Okay, Manny D Emma means can you go a bit slower? Can it be a bit slow, man? Idioma? 57. I've lost my passport: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna talk about what happens if you lose something and you have to report that you've lost that thing. I'm gonna look at what happens if you lose your passport. Okay, So do we remember the word for passport in Chinese? Is who job? Who? Just Okay, So the word fought to lose something in Chinese is field fuel. That's the first time on it. Once again, opinion looks like, Do you? Do you? But it's actually pronounced as deal as almost like a lefty on the letter o together deals . And we're also going to meet an old friend here, which is so that love we remember is when a verb has been completed, something has been successfully completed. So we have to say viola deal. And that means I have successfully lost something. Okay. The losing of my thing has been completely so. If you want to say I have lost my passport, we would say war viola water. Just so remember that what that means. My Okay, water is my water. Who job is my passport or dealer? What a job. I have lost my passport. Okay? Gil is to lose. Le needs have been completed. What? Who job is my possible 58. Valuables: Okay, So in this video, we're gonna look at three other valuables besides your passport, which you may also have the misfortune to lose when you're in China again. Andi for each of them. I'm not going to tell you what it is in English. What I'm gonna do is explain the meaning of the two characters and have you guess what it means. OK, so the 1st 1 is in now, then now, so that the end was fourth. Turn on. That means electric. And now is third time. And that means brain. So, electric brain bien. Now, what could that be? What valuable item of yours is? Your electric brain electric brain is a computer, and it's also used for Okay, so computer laptop again says the 1st 1 The 2nd 1 is Schulte Sure t so their second acted t we've already met means machine. Okay, Just like a plane is a flying machine Fe t This one is short t so this would show is 1/3 term and it means your hand. So what is a machine that you hold in your hand? The machine you hold in your hand is your your your cell phone, you move out. Okay, So what I'm about done is show t OK, And then the final one is Tien Bao Vien Bar service. CNN we've seen before is part of shots here, Which means how much money CNN is money and bar is a back. So a money bag would be your wallets. Okay. Wallet Sambar sambar. Okay, so quick. Review Word for computer is again now for wallet CN Bow on for your phone, Shorty. So test. How would you say I have lost my computer? Would be dealing with Didn't know doula would get enough. 59. Where are you from?: Okay, So what we're gonna look at in this video is the question. But I have been asked the most, by far of any question in my seven years in China. Okay. And that question is wary from So this one has got a lot of pieces. So I'm gonna give it to you as a whole phrase first, and then we'll break it down. OK, so the question is nation Nago, no shit is You are shouldn't up. Macca means which natca you are. Which and then the next word is towards Yeah, that means country. And there's a death there, Nationale Go! Go, Jack. So that is related to the word that comes afterwards. Which is Jen? That means person. Okay, So if you wanted to kind of directly translate this, this would be You are which countries person? Okay, because that is the same as when we say water like this is my something water. The end now is my computer. So do you are a person in the possession of which country I suppose, is another way to say Ok, shit Niagara Gorge. And one other thing to note is that quite often people will leave that person off of the end of the question so more often now actually here using Mnangagwa. Giada. So there's no began at the end because, you know, it's implied I'm not. Another country is a nuclear weapon. I'm in other countries, person, so you should now. 60. I'm from...: So we've learned how to understand the question. Where you from? Let's think about how we answer it. So what we're literally going to say is I, um America person been used America as an example. I am America person. So I am would be war. Sure, war should. What is sure is, um are is the verb to be okay. Wash it and then the next part is America, the United States. So the word for America is make war made war. That's 1/3 tone on a second time. May is in some situations mean beautiful. And here it's the sort of special work for America. Andi court is part of the word for country which we saw in the last video courts. Yeah, yeah. Okay, Sit together. The United States is make war. And then the last piece we have to say is, Yeah, that means person. So altogether. I am American. We would say Washington, make war in Washington, Make Warren Okay. There's one other way that you can say this, which is instead of saying rent at the end, you can say that and that turns this the thing that for it which in this case is make War America. It turns that into objective. So washing make water washing may water. That means I am American. So there's two options you're going to say I am American. You could say washing Meg Warren, or you could say washing made water.
