1. Intro: 1st Class Stances: How's it going, everybody? My name is Kevin Chambers. Thank you so much for checking out my class. I greatly appreciate that I have a tremendous amount of information and lessons to share with you all. So please take your time, have fun and, of course, be safe. Just remember, whenever you learn something new, it takes time to cultivate and developed. So please follow me on skill share. That way you'll have all the recent updates and notifications for whenever I post up a new class. So without further ado, let's begin. Your first class is stances. In my humble opinion, stances are your foundation to build upon, no matter how skillful you become. If you have a weak foundation, everything else will crumble. In this class, you will learn traditional stances, reforms, sparring stances for fighting and a self defense stance for the streets. Upon completion of my class, you will be able to successfully and safely go into these different stances which will only help you in my future classes. I like to start off my students with stances because they are the easiest to learn. Use such a foundation up to build on, and this builds patients within students to prepare them for the advanced techniques to come. I know all will do. Fantastic. Good luck. Here are a few pictures of myself when I was younger and the students that have talked over the years. Thank you for allowing me to teach you and guide you into the universe of martial arts. Were start your training with a simple warm up. Be safe and of course, have fun. 2. 1st Lesson: Warm Up: Hello, everyone. And welcome to your warm up video. Very excited to be teaching you guys again. Thank you so much. Of course, you ladies too. And before we begin, I'm a huge advocate on safety. So check out the slide presentation on safety. Okay, so we're going to start off with some head rotations, do about 5 to 10 reps going one way, and then you're going to do 5 to 10 raps going the other way. Whatever you decide, just make sure your body is nice and warm. Okay? We're gonna be moving on to shoulder rotations. Make sure you do 5 to 10 going one direction. And then, of course, the other direction. Just a nice and relax. Moving on. We're going to arm rotations where you extend the arms and again, 5 to 10 going one direction. And when you get comfortable, go the other direction. Stay nice and member with this. This is just a warm our upper body twist. Now, as you can see, what I just did was one not to Onley one. So going one direction in the other direction that counts is one again. 5 to 10 reps for these and If you feel the need to, you can pivot on the ball of your foot. Now some hip rotations again. 5 to 10 reps go in one direction and then go the other direction. Imagine you're drawing a huge circle with your hips, and if you need to after you're done with this to shake it off or bounce up and down like you can see me, go ahead and do so and now we're going to touch our toe. So place your feet together and try to touch your toes. It doesn't matter how far you go. The point is, you're gonna continue to work as you get lower and lower and lower as you can see me. Eventually you have your forehead. Touch your knees. Now the trick is, do not have your next. If when you're reaching down, have your neck nice and relaxed. Try not to look up. Just look down at the ground or in between your legs, and so we come out. We're finishing up your warm up with ankle rotations again. 5 to 10 reps go in one direction, and of course you need to switch and again, just like the hip rotations imagine that you're making a huge circle and the wider the diameter of your circle, the more range of motion you're going tohave. Plus, you're getting a great stretch. Congratulations on completing my basic warmup lesson. If you need a drink of water or you need to wipe yourself off with a towel, please go ahead and do so. Now. If you feel the need to do a longer warmup, please be my guest and just press, rewind and do it all over again. It is crucial for you to warm up your body's because we minimize our injuries and we maximize our gains. So, without further ado, let's start with your very first lesson learning traditional stances. 3. 2nd Lesson: Traditional Stances: Horse Stance: congratulations on completing your warm of video. Now let's dive right into one of the most universal stances in martial arts called the Horse Stands. I've used the horse stance in many different styles of martial arts, including karate, taekwondo, Tom Sudo, who should come through entire cheap. So what makes a strong horse stance? Your back is nice and a line his shoulders are relaxed, not up both of your hands on a fist by your place, your legs are wider than shoulder length and your feet are facing forward. Okay, everybody. Now it is your turn to try. And don't worry. If you're having some trouble with the horse dance, just take your time. This is why you're seeing this at a very slow pace. So you can really see the intricacies of the horse dance front, back side in the 360 degree view for you. Now, in other styles of martial arts, sometimes the feet are at a 45 degree angle facing out. So you choose whichever works best for you. But make sure you try both of them. Okay, Now I'm going to give you a couple more pointers. Don't let your horse stance. Be too skinny, and don't let your horse dance. Be too fat. There is a balance. Try to find it for yourself. Like I said, it's a a little bit past shoulder one. Now imagine your weight is going through the center of your body equally, distributing the weight through your legs again through the center of your body. And when you're holding your horse stance, I want you to choose a focal point. This could be a leaf tree. Best friend, anything. So for some of you who may not be able to perform the horse stance, it's all good. Don't worry about it. Don't beat yourself up about it. I'm here to work with all skill levels and skill sets. So with that being said, here's a modified version of the horse stands Okay, So if your legs aren't as flexible, then don't go so deep into the horse dance. Just raise your stance a little, or however much you need to feel comfortable. Then it's time, progressives. You will continue to lower yourself. If you want to gain more flexibility and strength, you could do squats as you see me take your time. Like I said you for Just have fun. How does a feel? You just completed the horse stance? Congratulations. Keep up all the hard work, everybody, Thanks for tuning into the lesson and now move on to the front Sant's. 4. 3rd Lesson: Traditional Stances: Front Stance: How's it going? Everybody welcome to your next lesson. The front stance. Let's get to it. Just like the horse stands. The front stance is widely used in many different styles of martial arts. The question again arises. What makes a strong front stance? Keep your back aligned. Front leg is bent, but the back leg is straight. Your feet should be shoulder length apart. Shoulders are relaxed, fister by the waist and keep both of your feet facing forward. Okay, everybody. Now it is your turn to try again. Here's a 360 degree view so you can check it out in full detail. And just like in the horse stance, the front stands can be modified depending on what style you have chosen. When I was studying, wish you come food. I'd realized that their front stances rear foot is they sink outward rather than forward. You can choose whichever works best for you, but like I said, I highly recommend trying than both out first. So give it a try, and since we're doing a friend stance, you have to practice the other side. Go for it. Here are a couple of more pointers if you can see your front toes, then you need to bend your front knee More. 70% of your weight is on your front leg, while 30% of your weight is on the rear leg. Keep your hips forward When your rear foot is facing forward. Keep your hips open. When your back foot is outward again. Try both of these. How's it going? Everybody? If your stances are not the way you want them to look or they don't look like mine, don't worry about it, Okay? Just take your time. Be diligent. Be patient and be good to yourself. Here's some modified versions of the front stance. So what I want you to do is bring your front foot closer to your hips rather than away from your hips. You're going to see your toes. But again, we're taking the time to develop the flexibility that we need so we can go further into the front stance when our bodies are ready. If you need another way to help you with the front stance, you can start doing lunges as you can see me, and this will help you with building strength, flexibility. It's section such great work, everybody I know you're gonna continue to do well, just like I said before. Be patient, continuously work on it. And since you're working with the front stance, you have to make sure you try the other side. So if your left foot was in front Now have your right foot in front, and now we're gonna move on to the back stance. 5. 4th Lesson: Traditional Stances: Back Stance: Okay, everybody, welcome back again. If you have watched my previous videos, you now know how to do a basic warm up, the horse stance and the front stance. I was about to say back stance. This is the one that we're gonna work on today. The back stance. So this stands is primarily used in taekwondo and tongue pseudo. And when you look at it, the back stands kind of looks like an offset or modified horse stance. Front foot is facing forward on the back. Foot is 90 degrees. Both legs are bent. Back is aligned. As always, legs are wider than shoulder length, like the horse stance, and your lead arm is up while the other is on the waist. Okay, now it is your turn to try out the back stance. As you can see, with this 360 degree angle, my back foot is more so in a 45 degree angle rather than a 90 degree angle. And that is perfectly fine. You can choose either at a 90 degree angle or 45 degree angle. It is all up to you and what feels more comfortable for you, but try out both of them and challenge yourself. If you can't get the 90 degrees, then go for the 45 vice versa. This way you can see where your flexibility is and what's best for you. Here are some additional tips for you. Your back leg has 60% of your weight on it, and your front leg has 40% of your weight on it. If that's too hard for you, then just do like what we did in the horse stance and have the weight equally distributed through this center. Make sure you're and shoulders are nice and relaxed and you're good to go. As some of you may know, we're going to be modifying the back stance to help out a couple of people who may need the extra help. Now, just remember anything that's amazing in life. It takes time to cultivate, so make sure you're taking that time. The easiest way to help you with this stance is just shorten it up, just like what we didn't the horse stance. And if you need to do some squats for flexibility, well, building your muscle strength. Congratulations on completing the back stance now in Tung pseudo and in taekwondo. If you decide to bring that back leg up and shortened the back stance. That's also called the fighting stance. So now you have two different stances with end the back stands to work on. Now move on to your next lesson the cat stance. 6. 5th Lesson: Traditional Stances: Cat Stance: How's it going? Everybody? Thank you so much for continuing your martial arts training with me. Let's begin now with the cat stands. Okay, so the cat stance could be very tricky. But if you can imagine that you have the ability to pounce just like a cat, you're going to be fine. So how do we set up the cat stands? Your front foot is facing forward. That back foot is on a 45 degree angle. Both of your legs are bent. The back is aligned as always. Your lead arms up while your rear arms on the waist and your front foot is on the ball of your foot. Okay, Now it is your turn to try out the cat stance and karate. The Japanese term for cats stands is Nikolas Adachi and I had such a hard time with the cat stance. I couldn't keep the majority of my weight on my back leg. My shoulders are always raised up and I couldn't relax, but I kept Daddy and eventually I mastered it. So what I want you to really focus on with the cat senses that front foot you need to be on the balls of your feet. Now, if you need to overcompensate by going on the tip of the foot, then that's what you need to do. Because when you over compensate, you can really figure out. Wow, that's how much I have to stretch out my foot in order to get back to the balls of my feet . So just keep practicing that here are a couple of more pointers. Be very, very light on your feet. Think of a cat about £2.20 percent of your whites on the front leg, 80% of your weights on the back leg and find the balance. How's the cat stands treating you all or Nico ascii Daci. Did you try the other side? Make sure that you're practicing both sides. So here's the modified version of the cat stands to help out those who need it if you can't put 80% of your weight on your rear leg like when I was first learning and try having your front foot flat to gain more balance and this will even out the weight. If you having trouble with being on the balls of your feet, you can do cafa razor, So imagine you're on your tippy toes or when you press down on the gas pedal, it's the same principle. If you're still having trouble with being on the ball of your foot, sit on the edge of a chair and raise your heel so that you're on the tip of your toes. Amazing work, everybody. The cat stance is one of the hardest stances toe learn, so just take your time with it. You have one more traditional stance, and it comes from Wing Cheung. 7. 6th Lesson: Tradition Stances: Wing Chun: everybody, thanks again for tuning in. This is your last traditional stance coming from Wing Cheung, one of my favorite styles. What's so great to me about the wind Chung stances that you could also use it as a self defense stance and a sparring stance as well. So how does the wind chung stance? Work? Let's find out your back is aligned. Another common thing. The shoulders are relaxed and down. This are by your waist. Toes are pointed inward as well as your needs are pointed inward and are bent. Okay, give it a try. Wyn Chung became popularised worldwide by it Mind which spawned an amazing trilogy. And they're working on the fourth by one of my idols, Donny. Yet it mine was also Bruce Lee's instructor. And in Chinese, the term for instructor is seafood. Now what's important about the Wing Cheung stance is your hips are facing forward while you're toes are pointed inward when you have your hips facing forward again. This builds the foundation so that you are always moving forward because you want to imagine that you're going to room your opponent. That's why you have the strong foundation you defeat your opponents with tactics. Here are a couple more pointers with your toes facing inward. Imagine that you are creating a triangle now. This isn't a shout out to Jay Z. It's just for you to see the triangle again. Have your hips engaged forward. And if you want to further explore the wind, Chung stands. Have your elbows tucked in. Your dominant arm is out in front of you with their elbow slightly bent. That arm that's in front is your antenna, and you can feel the opponents energy. So if your knees are hurting it too much because the way that your toes and your knees air facing inward, here's a modified version that I'm going to show you, which can also be used for fighting stance. So you kind of get two on one. Check it out. The simplest way to help you modify this stance instead of your toes facing inward have been facing forward, and I do apologize. I fail to mention that when you're in the wing cheung stance, be at other hand, not the antenna is right in front of your chest or your center. Well, that's it for traditional stances. Everybody great work continue to work hard. The next thing we're going to do is something a little more exciting. Sparring stances that can be used in the streets as well. So we're going to start off with my first style that I learned karate. 8. 7th Lesson: Sparring Stances: Karate: thanks for tuning in again, everybody. We are now going to take your training to the next level, and now we're gonna be working on sparring stances. So let's go into it with karate first. All right, now you can see that this karate sparring stance is very similar to another stance that you've already learned. Let's say the horse stands. It's just modified very slightly form or practicality. If you ever have to get into a fight, choose what side works best for you, whichever is more comfortable. Both legs are bent, feet are facing the same direction. Your lead arms up elbow is about 90 degrees and the other arm is on your stomach. Here are a few combinations for you to check out. That way you can see how they work in a real life situation. Okay, now it is your turn to try out the karate sparring stance. As much as you get that feeling of, you really want to try out the different combos I showed you. Please do not do them unless you've had previous experience and martial arts or any other type of physicality, because I will be making future classes that will go over many different combinations in different stances so that you can get a wide variety and that will you can play around, see what works for you. See what doesn't work for you. And make sure since this is with your lead foot in front, you want to make sure you try the other side. You're gonna find a lot of advantages and disadvantages from having your lead foot in front or your other foot in front. So go ahead, give it a try. If you want to move around, see how you feel. Do that, too. But I'll also be making another class on specifically movement only. Congrats on your first sparring stance. Let's keep this energy moving forward and we're gonna move on to taekwondo and tongue pseudo at the same time. You're see why check it out. 9. 8th Lesson: Sparring Stances: Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do: everybody. So in this lesson, we're going to be covering two different stances, taekwondo and tongue pseudo, and I'll explain to you why. So the reason why I am covering to fighting stances in this lesson is because both styles are very similar to each other and they both come from Korea. So instead of me teaching you another lesson, I figured it would be much easier just to cover both. Choose whichever lead leg you want, just like karate. Your feet are shoulder length apart. Your lead hand is down while you're rare. Hand is up. You're gonna be bouncing up and down on your toes. As you can see, that's what I'm doing. So again, here's some combinations for you to check out. Now it is your turn to try out the taekwondo fighting stance. Now. There shouldn't be any tension when you're bouncing up and down. If you want to try to find your rhythm, just think of your favorite song or even listen to it and try to go with the rhythm. That way you can have a nice cadence when you're bouncing up and down. And when I was little, I was told the reason why type Ondo practitioners kick so high is because they were literally kicking opponents off of the horses. It's amazing to see what some taekwondo practitioners can do. I hope one day you'll be able to kick as high as you want to kick and even myself. I've been doing this for so many years that I'm still obtaining my middle splits so that I can kick directly above my head. Only time will tell and you will see it in future classes. Okay, now we're going to transition to the tone pseudo stance just to remember everything you did in taekwondo. But I'm going to be showing you the very slight differences that tongue pseudo has and taekwondo has with their fighting stances. One of the main differences is your lead hand is up rather than down, and your feet are facing forward or a 45 degree angle. Here, some combinations for you to check out on what your notices. Taekwondo tongue, pseudo karate. They all have very similar moves. The more styles you learn your see the similarities. Okay, Now it is your turn to try out the tongue pseudo fighting stance. This really shouldn't be that difficult for you to transition. All you're doing is bringing that late arm up and switching the position of your feet. The lead foot can be facing forward if you want to, as well as the rear foot can be on a 45 degree angle. Like I was saying to you guys earlier, just figure out what works best for you and you can still be bouncing up and down on your feet. Think of it as Kaffirs was going crazy. You're on the balls of your feet, jumping up and down, up and down, up and down. And what I've learned with tone to dough is that tongue pseudo combines the principles from taekwondo, karate and a little bit of kung fu. So that's why you can see a lot of similarities when you're studying other styles and they call it a different name. But it's the same thing. Splendid work, everybody to fighting stances in one lesson for you. Let's move onto your next one boxing 10. 9th Lesson: Sparring Stances: Boxing: Welcome back, everybody. As you can read the title for this lesson, it is boxing, so let's get to punch in. In boxing, there are two different stances. Southpaw, which are for left handed boxers and Orthodox, which are for right handed boxers. Guess what you will all be doing. That is exactly right. You will be trying both sides to see what works best for if you're right handed your left leg leads. That's Orthodox. Both legs are bent, feet are forward, hands are up. Elbows Aaron to protect yourself and shoulders are nice and relaxed again. Here's some combinations for you to check out. Enjoy. Now it's your time to shine. You want to stay light on your feet, and in the moment you throw a power punches when you should be grounded and salad. You all know of Mohammed Ali. Float like a butterfly sting like a bee. You also may be wondering why in my attic boxing into your martial arts training. We'll know boxing is a country sport, but every punch boxing has to offer has been used in various styles of martial arts, especially the jab cross. So keep this in mind that you don't want to limit yourself to one style. That's why I'm giving you so many different stances to work on so you can play around, take pieces from wind chung, take pieces from taekwondo, take pieces from kung fu and put them all together to cultivate the ultimate weapon you want to become. Boxing is a great style toe have in your tool kit for martial arts. The boxing stance has used universally and other styles of martial arts, whether it's crab McCall, rustling or MM may, just with some few modifications. So let's move on to the movie Thai kickboxing Stance. 11. 10th Lesson: Sparring Stances: Muay Thai Kickboxing: How's it hanging? Everybody? So now we're moving on to Mui Thai kickboxing. Get ready! Movie tied Kickboxing is a very hard style with great conditioning to strengthen the body. The stance I'm going to be teaching you is more of a traditional stance but could be easily used in sparring on updated version that practitioners use now would be the elbows air down into front like in boxing. Both fister up about eye level. Your lead leg is in front on the ball of your foot. Shoulders can be up or down in your elbows are down, not out to the sides. Here are some combinations. Make sure that front foot you're on the balls of your foot, like in the cat stance. Okay, for those of you who have watched my previous videos, you already know my style. It is your turn to try out the movie Todd. Kickboxing stance, repetition and perseverance are your two best friends Whenever you're working on your martial arts, especially if you're learning something that so, here's a great quote about repetition. I fear the man who practices one kick 10,000 times rather than the man who practices 10,000 Kix one time you see where I'm going with this. If you can set a great foundation for your punches, your kicks, your elbows or knees, whatever weaponry you want to use and you practice it so much that whatever situation you're in, you can use those tools. If you're practicing all of the kicks and all of the punches and everything else just one time, that's not gonna be very applicable for you in case you have to use it, which I hope none of you have to go through. If you want to see some great movies, check out Band Down Kickboxer. Can you believe it? Two more stances left for you and you will be all complete with my class. Let's not waste any time and let's move on to geek undo 12. 11th Lesson: Sparring Stances: Jeet Kune Do: was good. Everybody, This is your last sparring stance before you move on to your self defense stance. Ironically enough, though, whatever fighting stance or sparring stance that you have chosen that's your favorite could also be used as a self defense stance. So don't limit yourself and let's begin. Would geek undo created by the legend himself? Bruce Lee When Bruce Lee began creating Hiss style, he took principles from various styles of fighting, from boxing to wing Cheung Kong, food to taekwondo and many other styles, and cultivating what works best for him. These air the ideas and principles I want you to have. Your feet are facing inward, but the rear can be outward. Your knees are bent and relaxed. Your rear hand is up to protect your face while your lead hand is in front of your body. With the elbow slightly turned out and your ear foot is raised more than your lead, check out some of the combinations from G. Couldn't do so. Just remember some key pointers here. Both of your feet are raised, but the rear foot is raised higher. I'm not doing it in the video, as you can see, because my camera man was going insanely slow, and I couldn't hold the position, even as martial artists have been practicing for years. Still have things we have to work on. But what's so amazing about J. Could do is whatever style you have learned G could do. Compliments, your style, the way that crop Mughal continues to evolve, and we'll adapt to whatever works in her real life situation. The same can be said for G couldn't do in its principles. G can do favours form Les Nous so that it can assume all forms. And since G can do has no style, it can fit in with all styles. As a result, G can do utilizes always, and it's bound by non likewise uses any techniques which served to its act. Okay, before I send you all off to your last lesson within this class, I love to read Joe Bruce Lee quote Knowing is not enough. We must apply. Willing is not enough. We must do. Yeah, so continue your training with the last lesson of this class 13. 12th Lesson: Self Defense Stance: Kevin's Stance: welcome to your final lesson. It has been a long and beautiful journey, and the greatest thing about it is we are just beginning. So this is my personal self defense stance that I use. Use it. However, which way you need to remember everything that you learned from watching all of my other previous lessons. My stance is rooted and G couldn't do. But it is a combination of a few other stances that I've learned over the years. And since I kept an open mind to learn from what I can from these different styles, I have grown tremendously. And so you, my lead arm is covering my stomach on a diagonal. My rear hand is in front of my face. My lead foot can pivot to face inward or forward, and my knees are slightly bent shoulder like the part year, some different combinations. Originally, I was going to give you a few different self defense stances from crop McCall and the name etcetera, etcetera. But then I realized that all of the different stances I've given you, they can be used as a self defense stance, excluding your traditional stances. So try this out, See what works for you. This in particular just works best for May because of my size, my ability to use speed over power and tactics over direct one line movements or attacks. Now, if a martial artist is to say that their style is the best, that they are lying to you because no matter what they say, every single style has its pros and cons, and the term best is just opinion. It's not fact. So weigh out the pros and cons and everything that you do. That way you could determine what's going to work best for you again. Try everything. You also learn sparse stances from car Got a as well as taekwondo tongue, pseudo boxing, mui, Thai kick boxing G can do and my own personal states. Stances are incredibly important for you. They helped build your foundation to help you with footwork that builds strength and endurance. I mean, the list goes on and on and on, so make sure you're practicing every single one of them. Figure out which one works best for you. It's a lot of trial and error, and what works best for me may not necessarily work best for you and vice versa. Also, please make sure you participate in the class project, which is either recording yourself or taking a picture of yourself in your favorite stance . And if you really want to challenge yourself, hold that stance for 30 seconds, then try a minute and then try three minutes and make sure you posted into the class project.
