1. 1 introduction to batik: Hello. My name is Naomi. I'm a textile artist. Today, I'm going to show you how to make a
basic batik fabric. Bati is an Indonesian
technique of decorating fabric by
using wax and dye. I have included in a class
project for you so you can practice all the techniques that I'm going to
be showing you. I will see you
whenever you're ready.
2. Tools and Materials needed: What tools do you need to start your biotic? Here is a list of all the materials and tools that you need to get started. You will lead a copy of the design are the sketch that you want to report this under fabric. Some paraffin wax, bee's wax, clear tape, or any type of tape you have that will secure the fabric. Chanting tunes. Chanting tools are traditional tunes. I used to draw an apply hot wax onto the fabric in batik. Some small paintbrushes, HB pencil, a white piece of cotton fabric, soda ash. Depending on the day that you are using, you must follow the instructions of the day that you are using. You may or may not need it. Salt. Also, depending on the instructions of the day that you are using. The die, spawns and node, MOG our cup. Rubber gloves to protect your hands. Walk spot. Walks port is used to melt the wax and keep it at a constant temperature so that he can be applied onto the five-week. A container for the dipole, a big spoon to stir the dye bath. A
a kettle for boiling water. And all part for boiling out the wax. And a stove. And don't forget to protect the table where you are going to work. Okay? So when you're ready, I will see you for the next step.
3. Transfer the design to the fabric: Hello and welcome back. Now that you know all the tools and materials that you need to meet the basic fabric. We are going to the next step. Firstly, you will have to cut the fabric, the size that you want. Pre wash it to remove all the dirt and eyes that it may contain, Latin dry, and then iron out any wing goals. I have done that already with my family. Now, I'm going to transfer the design to the fabric. Take the sheet of paper that you have the design on. Place it on the table flat and put the fabric on it. Make sure the fabric is in the right position. We got a piece of the fabric so it can't move. You can see the design of the family with the pencil on the fabric. Now that you have your design on the fabric, we can go to the next step.
5. Dyeing the Fabric : Now it's time to dye the fabric. Decide on the color you
want for your batic fabric. Make your dye bath as
instructed by the manufacturer. Don't forget to wear gloves
to protect your hands. Make sure you have
enough dye bath to submerge the Btic
fabric completely. For my dye bath, I'm using one
teaspoon of blue dye. This is the color that I choose, and I'm dissolving
this in warm water. I also need ten
soupspoons of table salt. I am dissolving this in
two liters of cold water. And I need four
soupspoons of soda ash, and I am dissolving
it in hot water. I am now mixing the dye and
salt solution together. I'm also adding the
soda ash solution before adding the baticFwor. Make sure the dye bath is cold
before you add the fabric. Otherwise, the wax will melt. Submerge the fabric in the
dye bath for 30 minutes. Less if you want a lighter color or more if you want
a darker color. You can also use
more dye if you want a darker color and less dye
if you want a lighter colour. Make sure the fabric
is kept submerged because any contact with the air will begin
the fixing process. Move and turn the
fabric occasionally. When the time is
up, take the fabric out of the dye bad
and hang it to dry. Do not squeeze the fabric
to remove the dye bad. Just let it dry
naturally as it is. I'm going outside to hang
my fabric to let it dry. I will see you for
the next step.
6. Boiling out the wax: First, I'm going to remove as much wax as possible from the fabric. I am going to do that by running the fabric. Place the magic fabric between two black newsprint. And I run it by using the correct setting recommended for the fabric. I am using an old iron that I only use for Batoche. If the newsprint is saturated, replace it with an adult one. I remove as much wax as possible from the fabric. Now let's go outside and boil out the rest of the wax. Out the rest of the wax. I am putting the fairway into a suspend boiling hot water for three minutes to remove any remaining wax. Make sure the Batoche fabric is covered with boiling water. Use a wooden spoon to stir the fabric in the boiling water. Now removed the batty fabric from the boiling water and place it into a bucket of cold water. The cold water will solidify any leftover wax. The wax from the water and discard it. Remember, you should not use this wax again. Troy into the rubbish and not into your sink because it will block your bikes. Give the fabric is good. Shake to remove even more of the wax, grants it again in cold water. If there is still more Watson the fabric. Repeat the boiling process again for a couple of minutes and rents the fabric again, we called water. Repeat the process until there's no more wax left on the fabric. On your show, your bad IQ fabric has no more wax on it. Wash it, and let it dry. This is the way the fabric looks. When it is dry. We have finished diabetic fabric.
7. 1 conclusion: Well done. You have finished
your first batic fabric. I hope that you
enjoyed my class. I kept the design simple because my main priority was for you to understand the processor
involved in butti. Now that you know everything, I hope that you will
explore and create your own different
patterns and designs. Let your creativity flow because you will find
inspiration everywhere. It's all around you. Be sure to keep
practicing and look at the project resources if
you forget the steps. And don't forget to share
your creations with me. I'm looking forward
to seeing them all. Thank you so much for
letting me be your tutor. I wish you lots of luck and
happiness as a batiqu artist. I look forward to seeing you soon for another
project. See you.
