Hand-lettering is a fun and accessible art form for all! In this workshop, you’ll learn hand-lettering essentials, from initial research through final design. Create your favorite hand-lettered quote or phrase, a picture-perfect lettered postcard, and a chalk mural. You don’t need any experience for this workshop, just some basic art supplies (pens, pencils, paper, an eraser, chalk, and a chalkboard.)

Workshop Timeline
- Milestone 1: In Hand-Lettering Essentials for Beginners, one of the most popular Skillshare Originals of all time with more than 60,000 students, lettering artist Mary Kate McDevitt will guide you through lettering a phrase that you find meaningful. Mary Kate shows you how to plan your layout, create sketches, and select images to help define the tone and mood of your piece. Share your artwork to the project gallery by June 19th.
- Milestone 2: In The Golden Secrets of Hand-Lettering: Create the Perfect Postcard, letterer and designer Martina Flor gives you another angle on beginner hand-lettering. Martina looks to typography for guidance and inspiration, and thinks of this work as “telling stories with letters.” She walks you through designing a hand-lettered postcard to practice your new skills. When you’re done, send your postcard off to a friend! Just be sure to share an image of it to the project gallery first (by June 28th.)
- Milestone 3: In Hand-Lettering for Chalk Murals, a Skillshare Original with designer and letterer Lauren Hom, you’ll apply your new knowledge to a new medium. Lauren teaches you to avoid common mistakes (like arm smudging), plan your image for a larger space, and think about lines and angles in a larger composition. Chalk lettering appears in a surprising number of places — from cafes and supermarkets to chic boutiques and home decor. It is both a useful skill and a fun hobby! Share your chalk creation in the project gallery by July 8th.
