Featured Class: Design Great Stuff: How to Make Merch with Draplin
Attention all graphic designers! Join the legendary Aaron Draplin for a 4-week workshop dedicated to exciting graphic design projects. These smart, entertaining classes are jam-packed with advice and Adobe Illustrator demos so you can refine your work with shapes, type, and color, and gain core design skills for every logo or branding project in your future. This workshop is great for advanced beginners and above. Total beginners can still participate, but may need to leave extra time to learn basic functions in Adobe Illustrator.
Workshop Timeline
- Milestone 1: First up, in Logo Design with Draplin: Secrets of Shape, Type and Color, you’ll learn how to use geometric structure, typography, and color to create iconic designs. For your first project, you’ll draw on your own personal history to create a family crest. Share your work in the Project Gallery by June 24th.
- Milestone 2: Next, in Customizing Type with Draplin: Creating Wordmarks that Work, you’ll learn Draplin’s approach to type — an essential skill for graphic designers at all levels. In this 90-minute class, you'll follow along as Draplin digs for antique typographic references and then creates several type treatments of his own to design merchandise for Portland, his beloved hometown. You’ll learn about kerning, customizing letterforms, sketching type for print, and prepping your files. Share your own type creation in the Project Gallery by July 3rd.
- Milestone 3: Last, in Design Great Stuff: How to Make Merch with Draplin, you’ll learn how to choose a design that works, find the best vendors to make your stuff, and make multiple pieces of merch with one design. Share your own merch designs in the Project Gallery by July 13th.
