About this workshop:
Join me in learning how to apply 5 composition techniques so you can start telling more to your photographic stories. We’ll review the techniques we covered in class (Leading Lines, Depth of Field, Patterns, Rule of Thirds, and Negative Space) and how to apply them everywhere. The point of this workshop is to teach you how to identify these techniques and to continue training your eye to spot them whenever you’re taking photographs.
How It Works:
About this Class:
This class is available to all skill levels! Whether you're a seasoned photographer or someone picking up a camera for the first time, you'll learn how to maximize composition techniques to improve your photographic storytelling so you can get more out of your photos.
Equipment:
Preferably a DSLR especially for those depth of field shots, but in the right situation you can get those with a camera phone as well.
Timeline:
Feb 15-16: For these couple of days, I’d like for you to concentrate on getting Leading Line shots. Again, the awesome thing about Leading Lines is that they are literally everywhere! Have fun with these whether it’s finding a long empty hallway or doing a great portrait.
Feb 17-18: Depth of Field is a great way to play around with subjects and composition. For these dates don’t be afraid to step outside the box and try something different.
Feb 19-20: Patterns are another concept that are all around. Try to get a shot where the pattern is very obvious as well as one where it’s broken up by a subject just to give our eye a challenge.
Feb 21-22: Rule of Thirds is always fun. There are so many different ways you can go with this one. So for these shots, I’d like you to try a landscape shot first (either a cityscape shot or literal landscape) as well as placing a subject at one of the 4 intersecting points in your frame. Remember imagining there’s a grid on our frame helps place your subjects much better.
Feb: 23-25: For your last day, try your hand at Negative Space. To me, this is where you can get the most creative. This rule of composition can be wide open. The only thing I’d try to stick with is using the rule of thirds in these shots. It will really make your subject pop when it’s placed in the right place.
