Having a clear and concise brand mission statement helps you define who your target market is and how you uniquely service their needs. Brand mission statements allow you to focus on what your business and brand are all about and can be a great elevator pitch for your business.

This video is an excerpt from my class Branding your Creative Business: Define Your Brand

Your brand mission statement should be as simple as possible. Richard Branson suggests using Twitter’s 140-character limit to keep your statement succinct and engaging.

Amazon, Facebook, and Apple are brands with fine-tuned statements that give you a clear understanding of who they are, what they do and what they stand for.

Here are some simple steps to find a creative brand mission statement of your own:

Step One: Fill in the blank: I create _______ for _______.

Keep it simple and descriptive. You should write down exactly what you’re creating and who you’re creating it for.

Here are some examples:

  • I create stunning birthday cakes for fun-loving children
  • I create bright cushion covers for pet lovers who like home comforts
  • I take breathtaking wedding photographs for stylish couples

Step Two: Now that you have your statement, twist it around so it convinces your target market that your product or service is just what they need.

The key points to keep in mind are: what you do, who you do it for and how you do it differently.

Step Three: Develop your mission statement even further by digging into your brand ethos.

Answering these questions will help you define what your values are for your business and brand. As an exercise, try writing 5 statements that you hold true for your business. You can use these statements on your website to drive home your mission.
