Earning Revenue

Earning Royalties

Skillshare teachers earn revenue based on a royalty system. Each month, between 30% and 50% of Skillshare’s total Premium Membership revenue goes to a royalty pool for teachers. The remaining revenue goes towards marketing and promoting your classes, supporting and investing in the website and platform, and running the day-to-day operations of our business.

Through our royalty model, teachers are paid out based on their share of the minutes watched by Premium students across the platform each month. For example, if 5% of all minutes watched on Skillshare by Premium students happened in a teacher’s class(es), then that teacher would receive 5% of the revenue allocated to the teacher royalty pool that month.

Because we are a subscription service, the size of the royalty pool and the amount of minutes watched on Skillshare fluctuates from month-to-month. The fluctuations are based on subscriber activity, as well as the costs of operating the website (such as video hosting), and our marketing and promotion of your classes. Still, it is always true that the more minutes students watch in your class(es), the higher the share of the monthly royalty pool you will earn. On average, first-time teachers earn $200 in their first month on Skillshare, with top teachers earning upwards of $3,000!

You must get a minimum total of 30 Premium minutes watched across all of your classes within a month in order to receive a payment for that month. Please note, minutes watched by students through a free class or through a free access link do not count towards royalty payments.

Viewing Your Stats

You can see minutes watched data in the stats section of each class. View your total earnings and minutes watched in your Teacher Stats dashboard, located in the Teach dropdown menu in the upper right hand corner of your account.
