I’m John Derry from Omaha, NE. I am an artist, photographer, and teacher. My background is basically all art. I have a BFA and MFA in Painting/Drawing. I have been involved with digital painting applications since 1983 and am one of the original authors of Painter (now owned by Corel).

After Painter, I authored the natural media brush libraries for Adobe Photoshop CS5 using the newly created Mixer Brush and Bristle Tips technology. As a result, my brushes are in use by digital artists worldwide.

I am passionate about pushing the boundary of digital mark-making tools for personal expression.

My goal is to author a series of classes that explore expressing yourself in a digital environment. I will begin with introductory lessons that focus on learning to be comfortable expressing yourself to others, something many folks never overcome.

In a digital environment you can blur the distinction between painting and photography...

I call it

dipping your paintbrush into a photograph.

Long term, students will take their newfound expressive voice and utilize them in applications like Photoshop and Painter on the desktop, and Procreate and Fresco on mobile. .

This creative journey begins with a single brushstroke!
