Example Project: Creating the Wild Island Farm

Example Project: Creating the Wild Island Farm - student project

Here is an example of how your class project can look like, based on my own personal answers to all three steps:

1) THE DREAM

My ideal world is part planthropocene and part equality. I want a world in which no one is discriminated for how they look, for their bodies or their health, for who or how they love and how they express themselves, be it in gender or otherwise. I want it to be fair and balanced and in harmony with an evergrowing return of nature into our lives. Plants everywhere. True wilderness, even within urban areas. Unity with Mother Nature and interactions with it based on respect and reciprocity. People thrive on relationships and community - between and with each other but also with the environment.
Within this world, I live on my island, deeply rooted into my community, surrounded by plants and trees that will outlive me, with the peace of mind that all of it will still thrive when I am no longer a part of it.

2) THE STATUS QUO

I have dedicated my life and most of my freelance work to the environment and have implemented many small and big changes into my daily life.
I gave up my dream of being a world traveler and am now rooting myself into a small island community and natural environment. I only travel out of necessity. I recycle (even though I know it is kind of pointless) and pay special attention to groceries and waste, always trying to do better than the month before. I learned how to cook and compost and stop buying clothes and stuff I don't need. I volunteer for an organization and work on sustainable projects. I also host the Climathon, a readathon about books that focus on the environment.

3) THE AFFIRMATIONS

There is a lot I could do better in, but I know I need to take it one step at a time. Some of my goals for the next two-ish years are:
- to further align my work / income with sustainability (if possible)
- to have more personal conversations with people about environmentalism and related topics
- to continue learning how to set boundaries for my mental health
- continue integrating into my local community
- continue hosting the Climathon
- continue to educate myself even more, especially in the topics of oceanology, geology and indigenous justice & wisdom
- finishing & truly starting The Wild Island Farm (the old island house I mentioned in the beginning of the class). The attached land is so degraded from decades of industrial farming and we are regenerating & rewilding it while also using it as our ground for growing our own food. It is a long, long journey. This year we could do little but in the next one or two years we will get closer and closer to the dream of self-sufficiency and a place that thrives even without humans.
