I tried this method with circles rather than squares to see what kind of look I can achieve. More planning and positioning would be needed for it to look like much of anything. The way the interior relates to the edges of the workspace seems to be key in achieving a good look, as Helen showed by tweaking that first stroke to account for it being doubled.
