Of course someone can have moments of creative genius knowing close to nothing about a subject.

However, usually it is the case that people who are very knowledgeable about a subject, and have tons of experience in that field, come up with most of the creative ideas and discoveries.

This comes from seeing some people thinking that it is more original to have no outside influences when it comes to their creative work.

This more often leads to unknowingly recreating someone else's idea, this is truly not original.

It gives the illusion of creativity without the work it requires, and it is almost pointless. (not to be confused with knowingly recreating something with the purpose of study)

A more kind approach to originality is to learn about all the great ideas and creative discoveries, and make combinations that are new.

In other words understanding for instance impressionism, and possibly giving it a new twist of modernism, maybe you paint modern life in an impressionistic way.
