we are the sons & daughters of life's longing for itself - student project

I'll let you in on a little something: I binged on this class in 24 hours. I really wanted to push something out by the end of the weekend, so it kind of has a rickety DIY feel to it (which I guess goes with the ethos of the quote, yeah?). I definitely plan to spend time practising actual copperplate lettering and swashes.

Quote backstory: this is a revised line from Kahlil Gibran's "On Children," which goes:

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

This poem meant a lot to me because at the moment in time when I came across it a few years ago, I was trying so hard to put my own feelings into words and gently share them w/ my parents. (I gave them this poem, this did NOT GO OVER WELL!!)

Anyway, my roommate took that line ("We are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself!") and inscribed it in a copy of Kahlil Gibran's poems for my birthday and it always made me smile and made me feel purposeful and happy.

I had a lot of fun doing the sketches because I had a Japanese brush pen! Scan coming soon perhaps?

I had a lot of trouble picking colors so I went with white. :/ Any suggestions?? I'm somewhat self conscious about uploading this because everything I've seen so far has been so pro, with the most beautiful and intuitive-looking swashes!!
