Not sure if I have approached it 100% correctly, but I'm rather happy with the end result, it kind of just created itself - I would have never thought I'd end up with a Japanese influence for my tiger ;-)
So the process:
I worked mostly with this image (focused around the eyes and overall feel)
My rather rough drawing:
Whilst not entirely symmetrical (and over-embellished) it did provide me with the necessary angles and lines I needed to start building my tiger.
The circles around the mouth gave me a great idea (shape) to use for the top and beard - my Japanese (half-moons) style/influence. I immediately gravitated towards the above colour scheme - teal was just the ticket...
but soon settled on the following colours instead. More harmony, I felt...
I settled for one of Adobe's dotted patterns instead - I think it worked rather well for my handsome old tiger :)
