vintage fashion illustration

September 16

Ok, starting from scratch. To avoid any copyright infringement, I have switched my project to this vintage fashion illustration by Rene´ Gruau.

There's not much in the way of clearly defined "shapes," but I wanted to attempt something more painterly. I've got a decent grasp on shape building, but would like to get better at working with brushes and textures. I think this will be a good challenge for me. Sure wish I had a Wacom tablet though...

So I've blocked out the main chunks of color using primarily the pen tool. The next, and most difficult part, will be creating the painted look with brush strokes and textures. The colors still need some tweaking as well.

Been moving at a snail's pace at this, but I'm finally back at it and here's what I have so far:

I've started filling in the lines on her dress, but I still have a looong way to go I feel like. I've been playing with different line types and sizes, and trying both the pencil and brush tools. I think I like the brush tool a little better. Hopefully I'll get her dress finished soon so I can work on her face, and the textures in the back ground, Her face is going to be difficult because my original photograph is pretty low res, so when I zoom in, I lose some of the detail. But I'll work it out somehow. Definitely still wishing I had a Wacom.
