unplugged (finished)

Milestone 3:

Okay, here is the final piece. I ended up tweaking my green color palette to get some more contrast, which I think was a good move. I also accidentally swapped the purple and the gray but ended up liking that better anyway. I didn't add too many things, and no texture because I wanted things to look clean. I definitely learned a lot and I don't know if I would have ever had the confidence to do an entire piece in Illustrator without this course!

Milestone 2:

As I was drawing my vectors, I was unhappy with the composition of my original drawing, so I decided to think about it a little and start over. I hadn't really considered how I would fill the whole 8x10 space. I'm glad I took the time to start over and get something I was actually happy with. Getting used to Illustrator took a while but I'm pretty happy with the overall result.

I like the first colorway but decided I would do a second just for the heck of it. What do you think? Is it "quiet" enough? Looking forward to experimenting with texture/pattern.

Milestone 1:

I was really torn as to whether I wanted to illustrate "quiet" or "loud," so I started by making word lists of each of them.

quiet:
sad
rain
alone
room
reading
mute

loud:
loud fashion/patterns
horns
blaring
speakers
annoying
instruments
yelling
attention

The initial image I settled on was a girl reading in a big chair by rainy windows. I sketched this out but felt it was too cliche, so I kept thinking. I came to the idea of unplugged headphones or the volume turned all the way down. I started by sketching some headphones and Walkmans (old school) and also some other things that represented no sound:

I liked the idea of something unplugged the most, and maybe something like a stereo turned off in a darkened room. Eventually I settled on an amplifier, as my own amp sits quiet most of the time, so that is what I want to stick with. I took some pictures of it and sketched from reference so that I could add lots of detail later if I wanted to. I'm toying with the idea of adding a guitar in there as well but I don't want to over-complicate things. I want to keep things clean. Something I really want to emphasize is that the amp is OFF.

I welcome any feedback :)
