map-making journey

WEEK 1

Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? a gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.
I want to create a map that shows my favorite resources in the NYC Garment District. I want to share the map on my blog and hope it will be used by others interested in sewing and fabrics in NYC.

Why am I the expert to create this map?
Because I shop the Garment District often.

Who is my target audience?
Hobby sewers living in or visiting NYC.

What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding etc.).
All of the above minus open hours.

Do I want my final project to be printed or digital?
Digital, though perhaps I adapt it for print in the future.

How is it going to be used/held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note: type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web).
Viewed online. A downloadable version (PDF maybe?) would be great to keep on a cell phone.

“Dear classmates, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to.....”
Not sure just yet!

WEEK 2

Here is my first hand-drawn map! It's my childhood neighborhood drawn from memory. As I was drawing it I realized along the way problems with scale and proportion. Since I drew it in marker, there was no erasing.

Share your favorite resources for maps/guides on your project page so fellow students can better see the kind of things that inspire you.
Unfortunately I don't have any resources for maps to share right now. I will add them as I come by them!
