deep roots are not reached by the frost

After some true contenders I finally selected:

"Deep roots are not reached by the frost" - J.R.R. Tolkein

(Pulling up my nerd pants) This quote is one line of the poem "The Riddle of Strider" which appears a few times throughout Tolkein's "The Fellowship of the Ring".

I felt this line has such significance and beauty even aside from the context it was originally drawn from.
