Ziggy Really Sang

"Why do you like David Bowie so much?" asked an acquaintance, looking disapprovingly at my Aladdin Sane t-shirt and iPod full of the Zig's best tunes.  At that time I could only think of "Um... He's awesome?" But it made me think: Why do I like him so much? I knew it couldn't be as simple as his music.

A few months later, the answer just came to me as my brother commented on the cover art of my new Diamond Dogs vinyl.  "That looks so weird."  I knew right then that is why I love David Bowie. He's weird.  So am I.

I've never really felt accepted, being the shy, socially awkward kid that I was (and still am). One day, while listening to a classic rock radio station I heard the song 'Ziggy Stardust', and it just clicked. I heard more and more of his songs, spent hours on YouTube watching his music video and interviews, even read a book on his songs in the 1970s (The Man Who Sold The World by Peter Doggett). I became more and more obsessed.

To me, David Bowie is the answer to "Are we alone in the universe?" Not meaning aliens necessarily, but people. I've felt like the only weirdo out there, but Mr. Bowie has shown me that there are others out there like me. Not across galaxies, but in the B section of a music store.
