"You ought to be ashamed of yourself!" - W.W. Denslow

I Love old screen printed illustrations, and Denslow's best of all! So, I decided to attempt to duplicate one:*)

The Original:

My Evolving Copy:

I started by blocking out the background, mostly using shapes and pathfinder.

Then, I blocked out the characters using the blob brush:*)

Next, I edited my colors:*)

Now I've patterned some of the shapes, and offset them, to imitate the screen printing!

Next, I traced the outline, mostly using the blob brush. I then turned the outlines into a compound shape so that I could use a navy-black-navy gradient. I think the original outlines were all in navy, but they look black in the center because they overlay the yellow.

Getting close to the end! I decided to take the outline trasparency down to 80 and I inserted the text! I also used the Roughen effect on the text:*)

Lastly, I added a PS Color Burn for a little texture ( I used this paper texture: https://mandarinelechat.wordpress.com/2011/10/20/digital-watercolor-texture-effect/full-resolution-paper-texture/ )

I'm soo Happy with the Outcome! I would never have been able to accomplish this without these videos:*) My last illustrator class got me no where near this! :*D
