You're so fucking classy

Hi!

I'm Stacia, a recent Graphic Design grad from Minneapolis. I started becoming obsessed with lettering my sophomore or junior year of college. Everything I have done I have mostly taught myself so I am really looking forward to learning some techniques to make my work better. I tend to be really critical of my own work. I can love something I am working on and end up hating it later that day. I'm hoping that learning more techniques and tricks will allow me to be a little less critical :)

I am an avid fan of the HBO series Girls, so I couldn't resist a chance to letter a quote from that. The quote I chose is "You're so fucking classy." Despite it being a bit vulgar, I love the irony behind it. My plan for the lettering is to make it look classy, yet playful, because I feel like that's exactly what the quote is! I might have gone a little overboard on my moodboard, but I found so many things that I love. I definitely like the color scheme of blacks, golds, and other neutrals. I don't have a lot of ideas for the lettering itself but I would like to include a bit of script. I would also like to work on my ornamentation.

Really looking forward to this class!  I always appreciate feedback, especially if it's not necessarily positive...I am looking to improve!

It's been so long since I have had time to work on this. I'm hoping I can make some good progress this week. Here is my first round of warm-up sketches for the word "classy."

These are some of my rough thumbs. I would like any feedback! I am hoping to do a lot of ornamentation around the edges so I'm wondering which layout and type styles might work best to make it look classy rather than cluttered.

I've "refined" two of my thumbnails to figure out general layout:

Here are the two drafts I created based on these. If anyone has a preference for one or the other, I would love to hear which one and why:

After talking to a couple people I decided to go with the first draft. Here is the revised pencil sketch:

I wish I could devote more time to refining this but alas, work has taken over. Here is the final for now and I hope to return to it soon.
