My plan is to continue to expand my Workshop 1 project into a collection. I'd like to focus on the florals and foliage that are influenced by my theme. I also plan to (eventually) tweak some of my patterns and incorporate my unused motifs from Workshop 1 moving forward into my collection as I see fit. I think my new motifs might end up being sketches, but may include watercolor motifs if I can figure it out!

I drew my initial inspiration from my visit to the Art of the Qur'an exhibit at the Smithsonian. This formed the foundation of my collection. From here, I started thinking of myself as one of these artists from centuries ago and decided to create a new moodboard with the feelings that this imagination evoked. Here's a new moodboard with the small story that draws on the inspiration of my collection.

Here is my third pattern in different colorways for Workshop #1. I may play around with all three patterns and see if i need to change anything and make additional patterns from my motifs later.

Illustrated Sketches:

The following are my illustrated sketches. I have not chosen my color palette yet and will be working on that next.

There are a lot of geometric shapes (which I actually had a bit of a difficult time with and still trying to figure out how to use the different transform tools in Illustrator to get shapes proportional and to get things to reflect and rotate correctly). Geometric shapes and floral motifs are foundational in Islamic art and the curvatures throughout my motifs are suppose to be reminiscent of calligraphy.

I used a wacom tablet to draw the sketches. It's my first time using one and there's a bit of a learning curve! :)

Inspiration and Mood board:

My theme is the Art of the Qur'an, which was inspired by my visit to the Smithsonian's Museum of Asian Art in Washington DC. It is the first exhibit of Qur'ans in the United States of its magnitude. There are more than 50 Qur'ans from Istanbul to Afghanistan on display that date back from the early eighth to the seventeenth century. I have always been drawn to the beautiful and intricate designs and colors within the scriptures. Because the Qur'an is meant to be heard and chanted, calligraphy is used to beautify the pages to express that orality. The designs not only serve as visual beauty to the reader, but it also helps the reader locate themselves when reading through the script.
