Workshop #2 Illustrate from Photos & Paintings

I have decided to continue to work on my Desert Whisperings Collection for these Focal Point Prints.  That was my original intention when beginning this series of 5 Workshops.  I almost decided to scrap the whole collection and move on to other collection ideas.  I have really struggled with balancing life and these workshops and my other responsibilities but I will push through with my original thought process.  I will be redesigning many patterns though as I was not entirely happy with the final patterns. I also may add a few new colors to the collection as I felt like I need a few more. I am grateful for this community here and the community Bonnie has cultivated through her Roost Tribe.

Reposted from below.

This collection is inspired by the desert of the southwestern United States. I reminds me of peace and tranquility. The warmth of the sun in the winter months. Gods beautiful creatures scurrying about and flying from spiny cacti toward the wide open sky. The enchanting flowers that bloom in the early spring weather and the plants that continue to grow all winter long.

This workshop was just what I needed.  I went into it thinking about specific patterns and color ways and didn't make one pattern that I thought I would make.  I had to revise some ideas as I designed.  I am not done with this collection as I have more ideas and hopefully can complete a few more pattern ideas I went into this collection thinking of.

Hello everyone. My name is Carolyn. I am new to all things surface pattern design and Adobe Illustrator. I have always had a creative side and have yearned to further develop my skills. I have had a soft spot in my heart for surface pattern design for some time now, I really just needed a little push to begin. I feel like there is so much to learn but you have to start somewhere.

Summer's Touch

As summer envelopes me, I can't help but notice the sweetness of everything about it. The feelings, sounds and smells that invoke the pureness of summer. The different textures are not always noticed but still have a place and beauty of their own.

Abundant

The blessings you have are so very abundant you can't begin to count them all. If only a short walk through the garden can begin to tell. As I walk through the trees I notice them hanging with their fruits growing ever bigger by the day. The vines heavy with bunches of grapes. The green herbs with their flowers teaming with honey bees. The butterflies flitting from one resting place to another. The small insects and birds partake in the blessings too. The wheat not too far away, blowing in the breeze nearing the day of harvest. Oh how the sweetness of your blessings are too many to count on just a simple walk through the garden.

Here is my first focal point pattern from the collection Summer's Touch.  This was the third pattern I created and it went slightly more smooth than the first two.

Here is the second color way at 100%.  The one above is at 200%.

Here is the second pattern in the Summer's Touch collection.  I call this one Stones.  The third pattern in this collection will follow Stones and is called Stones and flowers.  Super original, I know. :)

Here is the third pattern in the Abundant collection.  I call it Abundant Blue. I know, once again super original but I am new at this and hopefully I get better at naming.

I learned quite a bit from this workshop.  I plan on trying to create 3 entire collections and finish out the class project from Bonnie's first class.  I was trying to learn Abobe Illustrator and figure out my Wacom tablet and get acquainted with my new iMac. Did anyone else switch from a PC to Mac? There was definitely a learning curve and I had to redo quite a lot.  I hope in the future patterns I build that I can really envision the end product and how it will be used.  For these patterns I was just trying to figure out all the ins and outs of AI and how to use my new tools.

Thanks Bonnie for all your hard work! You are a wonderful teacher and a great inspiration!

If anyone would like to see more work of mine in the future you can head over to instagram.
