12.10.2013: Lettering Warmup

I've been doing a bit of work here and there when I can, trying to find longer spaces of time to work on this, as it clearly gets easier once I get in the zone. A number of warmup sketches below. I started with "Drinking" but found the 'ing' cumbersome and eventually just worked with 'drink'. I realize I can't cheat like this for the final project, but for a warmup, this seemed to improve my workflow. One thing I notice is that I tend to be happier with my tight pencil sketches than their inked counterparts; some charm or something is lost between the two, not sure what's going on there.

11.15.2013: phrase selection, research

"Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes" is an Oscar Wilde quote that's a favorite with my bar-friends. Seems like a good choice - short and sweet, with good narrative implications.

(I think I want to work off of the meaning of the quote rather than associations gleaned from its author. So not too decorative, bit of a rugged, working feel to it.)
