Wooden Mountain Dragon

8. Final Image

"A wood elemental dragon resembling an elephant who is a royal hermit atop a mountain with mighty tusks and wings and with the ability to breath ice."

7. Layout: Background and Scenery

The Dragon needed to sit atop a mountain so finding an impressive landscape allowed for more storytelling. Overall the Dragon now made a fierce appearance but the picture became too dark for my taste. I still wanted the Dragon to have a certain gentleness and wiseness.

6. Sketching 2nd round

After more feedback from mentor Andrew Hou I went to do another round of sketches trying to find a more fierce and dramatic character for the Dragon.

5. First Lineart, Layout and Color Pass

Having done research on the wings I went at doing my first complete lineart of the Dragon and thinking about the surroundings in which to put it and making a first color draft.

4. Sketching 1st Round

I started doing first preliminary sketches. Somewhere down the line I realized that I have no clear idea about how to design the wings. So after these sketches it's time to research wing design.

3. Silhouette

I went into researching silhouettes starting loose and rough with a very large brush.

Out of these I picked three to further elaborate on mixing silhouettes and previously found features.

2. Moodboard

I then put together a moodboard composing pictures I have taken myself in the natural history museum and outside with pictures I gathered via an image search on the internet. I was looking for textures for the skin, scenery and moods which would inspire me.

1. Keywords

In the first step I started off with throwing in a lot of keywords. I put it all into one sentence for the Dragon I am going to create in this project:

A wood elemental dragon resembling an elephant who is a royal hermit atop a mountain with mighty tusks and wings and with the ability to breath ice.
