Wildlife Conservation Society

Milestone 1 –

I chose the Wildlife Conservation Society (www.wcs.org). The WCS is a global organization that works to save wildlife and wild places across the globe. However, its greatest claim to fame is probably that they operate five of the most well-known institutions in New York City- the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Queens Zoo and the New York Aquarium.

I chose this organization because I see a few issues with the current logo and identity:

1. It doesn’t reflect the long history of the organization (120 years) and its position as a leader in the world of conservation.

2. Its integration with the various parks seems like an afterthought and it’s not well integrated into the overall identity system of the zoos.

3. It is often used on the web at small sizes and is hard to read and/or not prominently displayed.

4. Although I could not find a history of the current logo (when it was created, by whom, etc.) I think the organization would benefit from a more flexible design that can be adapted across mediums.

Since the WCS will turn 120 in 2015 perhaps it would benefit from a brand refresh in order to attract more people not only to the zoos and aquarium but to support their conservation efforts all over the world.
