Wild by Cheryl Strayed

I'm reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed for my drop cap project.  It's cheryl's account of hiking the pacific crest trail.  Chery's life is falling apart and in a last ditch attempt to change things around, she decides to hike the pct by herself.

The book is full of realy vivid descriptions of her encounters on the trail, from hunger, pain, danger, and the people that she meets.  So here's my brain dump of key words

so here are a few rough sketches: (sorry for the blue photos!)

I liked the idea of the S on top of a compass.  In the book, Cheryl starts off not even knowing how to work her compass, but learns on the trail.  The lower photo is meant to be a section of the map of the pct with the S forming part of the trail.  I think it would benefit from some color, but that's the basic idea.  From there I went to  Cheryl's backpack

Her backpack is nicknamed "monster" and she can barely lift it herself at the beginning of the hike.  Cheryl talks about bein in a semi-upright position for most of the hike, so I thought the S could be squished down a bit by the pack.

I also liked the idea of incorperating the boot that is on the front cover of the book, making the Letter S from the lace.

FInally, I came up with the idea of having the S be incorporated into the boot print.

Personally i feel like a lot of these are a bit too far from a drop cap, and have just become an illustration, so I think the compass and the map at the top would probably be the best, although the boot print could function as a drop cap as well. I'd love suggestions and feedback!
