When medstudents try design

My name is Anna and I'm a 5th year medical student from Moscow, Russia. Since I am studying a lot, doing scientific research and also going through a surgical subresidency I have a lot of information that needs organizing. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn as well as make something nice and useful for my day-to-day life. I started out with looking through my most used folders to get the idea of which icons would be most useful. Here's the top 5 I came up with:

  1. Clinical cases (patient charts and case reports)
  2. Photos
  3. Sketchnotes (lecture notes, materials for classes I teach)
  4. Science (research, published articles)
  5. Public speaking (Powerpoint presentations and additional materials)

I did some research using the websites you suggested, sketching the ideas as I went. Eventually I found a lot of camera pictures I liked already, so crossed out that one plus got the other four concepts I wanted originally.

Then I did the final sketches:

Then began the hard part! Since I have never worked in Adobe Illustrator before (or dealt with any kind of vector graphics really, just basic Adobe Photoshop knowledge here) I spent unbelievebly much time on any element that involved using a pen or pathfinder. But I stuck with it, used gridlines and all the other stuff you mentioned, even mastered the "shadow" effect. So, here's what my work amounted to:

Thank you very much for the class, I had a lot of fun with it and learnt a lot!

Any comments on my work will of course be appreciated.
