When a man loves cats...

Hi fellow letterers! I'm really excited to get working on this project :)

After much deliberation, I've decided to letter Mark Twain's quotation "When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade without introduction."

It's a bit of a long sentence to work with, which I was wary about, but I keep coming back to this quote so I'm going to give it a whirl.

I've done some PRE-pre-warming up on Pinterest, just to get a vibe going for colour, Mark Twain-era lettering styles and a vibe for some cat illustrations.  I think I'm going to go with a (hopefully) cozy colour scheme of black, gold, red, green.

I've been looking at some Civil War posters as I associated that industrial side of Americana with Mark Twain.  I'll try to balance that industrialness with a slightly more fancy, gilded age vibe, and maybe look at Parisian lettering of the time also as I associate that with turn of the century cats (Steinlen, Lautrec, etc). Mark Twain is known for his sense of humour, so I have to incorporate that too somehow.

I would like to create a background pattern too, maybe a cat pattern - something along the lines of the patterns included on the moodboard.

Anyway, this is all VERY early prep work...Still a lot of decision to be made!

Next I'll be working on my actual words warm up and I'll do another mood board to go with that.

Have I mentioned how excited I am?!
