Watercolour & Mixed Media Explorations

For this project I used mostly Winsor & Newton artists' quality tube watercolours, along with a few tubes from other brands. Lightfastness is important to me, so I only purchase pigments with high ratings.

Negative Space

I wanted to include both foliage and a word in my painting, so I came up with this:

Masking Fluid

I had never used masking fluid before. I chose Art Spectrum, an Australian brand, which worked well. I applied the masking fluid directly over my light pencil lines, as Ana Victoria suggested. Removing the masking fluid also removed most of the pencil lines, which was handy.

I like the way the colours transition from lighter at the top to darker at the bottom.

White Paint

I decided to use the same motif for white paint as for negative space to compare the two techniques. The white paint is Dr Martin's Bleed Proof White.

I prefer the white paint version because the watercolour texture continues naturally under it, and the white motif sits on top, thus coming forward more. The white is really white, rather than the pale ivory colour of the paper in the negative space version.

In addition, I used more violet in this version, so the colours are what I was aiming for but didn't achieve in the negative space version. (The scan looks too bright and doesn't show the more subtle texture very well.)
