"Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye"-Bill Hicks

I've always struggled with hand type, it always feels more rigid than I'd like. This made my drive to not only survive, but thrive in this project exponentially greater. In the end, having the discipline to continue sketching rather than jumping onto the computer was truely the most difficult part, at least for me :P

Bill Hicks has always been an inspiration to me, this quote being my favorite of his. So I dove right in...

Here is some of the reference I collected, the full pinterest board is here: https://www.pinterest.com/dannisinisi/watching-television-is-like-taking-black-spray-pai/

In the beginning I approached the quote assuming that the word "spray paint" would be the key. I sketched various styles for that mainly based on it's punch within the quote.

As I started sketching quick layouts though, I quickly realized that I didn't want that to be the focus because in fact I wanted the visual depiction to be more about the viewer.

After attempting to work within a square and messing around with the flow of the phrase I decided I felt too constrained based on the length of the quote so I started going vertical with some condensed type styles. At this time I found the lockup I was looking for... having the key words span the width and integrating some spot icons/illo elements to bring some playfulness to the otherwise bold all-caps type.

The first word was the toughest...struggling with that for a while I tried literally every kind of type I could think of. Something more rounded and sans serif but bold weight, something with serifs that showed an unfinished line quality... on and on. I eventually asked my friend Kelsey what she thought of it and she brilliantly suggested a play on the MTV logo (originally created by Patty Rogoff and Frank Olinsky of Manhattan Design).

Then I started working on the icon to inset within the center. My goal was to create something that abstractly related to the 3rd eye and potentially connected that with a T.V.

I'm thinking of doing a singe color print from this, so I kept it simple, just added a hint of texture to help tie all of the type styles together. Not entirely sold on it, any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated!
