Volcally

Volcally is an innovative platform that gives businesses the ability to incentivize volunteerism by rewarding people in their local community for using their unique skills and talents to support, enable and empower local nonprofits.  Visit Volcally.com for more detail.

When I started Volcally in September of last year, I "designed" the logo to be a word mark only, without an associated logo or icon, which was fine at the time.  However, we are now realizing that there are several places within the Volcally platform where having a custom, recognizable logo icon would improve the design and user experience.

Looks like this course will be helpful in getting on the right path towards creating a representative image/icon for Volcally.

I'll add progress updates below.  All feedback and advice is welcomed!

Choosing the animal & making a moodboard:

Choosing the right animal to represent our mission and focus at Volcally was difficult, and honestly, I'm not sure it even makes sense to use an animal, but this should be a good exercise either way!

I did a quick search on animal symbolism, and decided I would choose an animal who's symbolic impression most closely aligned with the Volcally mission and focus.

I checked out a few sites, and ended up finding a seemingly decent fit on the site www.spiritanimal.info/

I decided to go with the hummingbird.  According to the site:

The hummingbird generally symbolizes joy and playfulness, as well as adaptability. Additional symbolic meanings are:

  • Lightness of being, enjoyment of life
  • Being more present
  • Independence
  • Bringing playfulness and joy in your life
  • Lifting up negativity
  • Swiftness, ability to respond quickly
  • Resiliency, being able to travel great distances tirelessly

Sounded good to me, so I kicked off the moodboard.  I looked through hundreds of images, and narrowed it down to these:
