Visions | Skillshare Projects

Lucy Rivera

Teacher, Artist.

I am the art teacher at a continuation high school in southern California. While trying to catch up on credits and graduate, my students are dealing with major life challenges ranging from poverty, homelessness, young parenthood, to learning disabilites. I try to open a window of possibility for them through art, and strive to get them to realize how important having a vision is, whether it's the start of the creative process or having goals for your life.

One of my favorite things to do is show them how to screenprint in our art room, and every year I design a shirt for them. This year this is the design.  It began as an india ink sketch, minimally cleaned up with GIMP. (Poor teacher!).  I burned the screens by hand and showed them how to print on some bulk tees I was able to get donated.

First photo is the back, second is the front of the shirt.

One day, I hope to further this idea by having a T shirt company that features a rotating gallery of at-risk high school students art.
