Vintage Poster

*New, updated project   Septermber 28, 2015

Hi everyone-

I took this class last year around this time and created a vintage coffee label. Then, a few weeks ago I saw Goodtype was collaborating with Skillshare and Mary Kate to promote this class and I wanted to take another stab at it. I recently finished a 365 days of hand-lettering project and I wanted to see the growth and progress I have made since last year. I decided to just work on a basic poster and not really incorporate it into a physical product.

Below are a few of my inspiration/research pieces that I found and really love.

This is a thought that has been floating around in my head for the past few weeks so I thought it would be fun to letter. "This moment, right now, is your life, live it." Below are my initial thumbnail sketches for the layout.

I ended up going with the bottom left layout. Below is the more refined and tightened sketch ready to be inked.

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out simply judging by my growth from my previous project. I feel like the layout is stronger and I have grown more confident in my lines. I still see many areas that could use some improvement but I also enjoy being able to to see it was made by hand. I really enjoyed coming back to this project and re-working it.

Thanks for checking it out!

Last year's project November 2014:

When I was in college package design and typography were my favorite classes. I loved figuring out how a package would work and what the end result would look like. My job hasn't always allowed me to produce new packaging and incorporate typorgraphy the way I want. So, naturally I was drawn to want to create packaging for the project. I love coffee and I enjoy trying different kinds. I thought this would be a great opportunity to create a vintage-inspired coffee label.  I haven't decided yet if I want to make labels for a bag or if I want to try and create a label based on an old coffee tin. I think the tins are so cool but I am gonna have to shop around a little bit to see what I can find to nail down dimensions.

Here are some of the inspirations I have been looking at so far. Some of these are modern designs based on vintage but they all had something that I found to be inspiring.

All of these inspirations have been pulled from online but I hope to get out this weekend and find some treasures that I can actually hold and study a bit more.

I came across a great find today. I found this vintage sugar tin and it is amazing. All the details and the colors are exactly the inspiration I was looking for. This makes me want to create a label for a tin instead of a bag but I may need to find something smaller for the actual project.

Inspiration Sketches

Next up I got to work sketching from my inspiration images. I found this to be really helpful. Sitting down and really studying the detail of each piece I picked out made me appreicate all the little details. I feel like I have been missing out by not doing this process with all of my projects. The hard part is going to be narrowing all my inspiration down into one piece. There are so many thing I want to include.

Confernce Call

These are the notes I made from my conference call. I think I have decided to do a label for a tin instead of a coffre bag. It feels a bit more vintage to me.

Thumbnails

The thumbnails were really fun for me but also a bit challenging. I had a lot of ideas swirling around in my head so it was hard to include everything. I also have a problem working in a small space so I felt like I was still drawing too large for the scale. I also feel like my final piece will allow me a bit more room that I originally thought so I may still be able to add some extra things in the end. Here are my current thumbnails.

I started to digitize and color my project. I am playing with a couple of different color palletes at the moment. I'm not sure I'm sold on any of them yet. I can't see to find the right balace. Do you all have a favorite or have any suggestions?
