Understanding how to edit photos

Hi everyone. I'm Victorio and I'm learning how to take better photos with a recently purchased Nikon 3200 DSLR camera. So an introductory course on using photo editing tools is just what I need!

The following pictures are 'Before' and 'After' shots of some of my more recent photos that I've taken and edited. In terms of software, I use GIMP. One day I'll graduate up to Photoshop or Lightroom. For now, GIMP is serving my needs quite well.

Now it's on to the photos!

Photo Set #1: AMERICAN GOTHIC

The above picture was one that I took on an overcast day. I liked the building's architecture, particularly the symetry and color. But I wanted it to be a bit more dark. I exported it into GIMP, where I duplicated the image. I then used the 'Levels' tool on one layer to adjust the midtones. My next step was to use the 'Unsharp Mask' tool to make the details stand out more clearly.

After, I switched the mode to "Overlay' for the additional layers. To tone down the harsh light coming from the sky, I used the 'Blend' tool.

Here's the result:
