I started out with a mind map because it's a technique I've never used before. I knew before I started that I wanted to do something with my grandpa's cottage in Traverse City, Mi but wanted to explore other options as well. I ended up with a boat made of books, a gun, and a camera; all things that remind me of the cottage. I'll probably also add the type "Traverse City, Mi" at the bottom of the frame. It'll be a very simple composition.
I don't have too much experience with texture so I'm using this project as an excuse to dive into it a bit more. My mood board above has a lot of great texture reference. I think the Colin Hesterly frames on the bottom are closest to what I'm going for.
I didn't like how my idea was turning out so I decided to do something a little different. I'm basically going to illustrate a bunch of objects that remind me of the cottage and lay them out in an organized spread. It seems like this layout is working so now it's just a matter of illustrating and texturing everything.
Things are starting to come together.
Getting close. I might illustrate one more object for the top left hole. I'll also play around with textures once everything is done.
Here is the final textured print version:
I also ended up hand painting everything and sold it at a charity auction. It was really nice to get away from the computer for a while.
