Travels with my aunt (Schokoladen-Strecke in Berlin)

I want to create an illustrated map of (Nuremberg city) Berlin as a gift for my aunt. We traveled together to this city last spring and we both loved the city very much.

About Me:

Hi! I'm Maria, from Spain (Canary Islands) I work as illustrator and animator freelance and i love travelling and making illustrated sketchbook travel. You can see some of them in my website www.mariabombassat.com. I'm very interesting about making maps to improve my skills :) Since a few years I travel every year one time to Germany with my aunt, she's a very nice person and very funny (I love her very much!!) so my project will be a gift for mi aunt!! The city: (Nuremberg) Berlin. Nice to met you all! :)

The briefing:

  • Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? a
gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.

I’m making this map as a gift for my aunt, she’s getting old so i want to recolect memories of our trip together to (Nuremberg) Berlin and put it all together into the map.

  •  Why am I the expert to create this map?

Well, the map will be about our memories and personal experiences, so I think I’m the right person to make it ;)

  • Who is my target audience?

The principal target for my map is my aunt, a 72 year old women. She’s classic and cultured. She’s single and she likes to spend time listening classical music, reading folktales, translating tales from German to Spanish or watching classic films. When we travel together, she always looks previously the best candy shops in each city (she’s crazy about chocolate!) that we are going to visit. Also, she likes to visit classical buildings like palaces, castles or churches. She’s a very imaginative person, she likes to go walking everywhere, sometimes even if it's snowing or raining… And one more thing I think very curious of my aunt, she’s always looking to find a coin on the road, she says it gives luck, so she’s always scanning the ground.

  • What level of detail do I need to include? (Names,
addresses, contact info, street names, website,
hours, descriptions, color coding etc.).

I think that the map need to have drawings of principal buildings, maybe some particular street names, and highlight the places where we use to stand or places with anecdotes about our trip. I don’t think it must have a very high level of realism, but it has to be nice and understandable.

-

After thinking if I'm going to have the "leitmotiv" of the chocolate in the map maybe I can include the information about each shop, the logo the address... maybe something special of each shop?

  • Do I want my final project to be printed or digital?
How is it going to be used/ held? What other
constraints do I need to keep in mind moving
forward? (Note: type can be smaller on printed maps
than when viewed on web).

I would prefer to give her the map printed, but I want it digital to put it on my website.

-

The map will be printed as a postcard to send it as a Christmas card.

  • “Dear classmates, I need your help/expertise/
guidance on how to.....”

Dear classmates, I need your help and your feedback to make something nice, a little classic, but, at the same time, I would like to experiment a little, not only with the graphic style but with the ideas. Thanks!! :)

After reading the briefing I've been thinking that maybe a good point to start my map could be the passion of my aunt of chocolate so I'm thinking that maybe i'm gonna change the city of the map because at Nuremberg we didn't find so many candy shops as we found in Berlin. Also I'm thinking that maybe I can make the road that we used to take to visit all the candy shops in Berlin. I have to think about it mmm but I think it could be more interesting. I'm thinking that it would be great to make a postcard with the map and send it as a Christmas card.

Hand Drawn Map Excercise:

I choose to make this excersise with the route of a month-long trip to the southeast Asia that i did a few years ago. I first drew the map with the itinerary:

Then, looking into my travelbook I realize of all the labels of the diferents beer of each city so I though it was a good idea to mark each point of the map with a bottle beer.

Well, I'm going to start my project:

Finally I'm going to show in the map my aunt's favourites chocolates shops in Berlin, so there is some information about them:

G. Buchwald - Bartningallee 29, 10557 Berlin

Leysieffer - Kurfürstendamm 218, 10719 Berlin

Confiserie Mélanie - Goethestraße 4,10623 Berlin

Rittersport - Franz. Str. 24, 10117 Berlin

Lindt Boutique - LP12 Mall of Berlin, Voßstraße 32, 10117 Berlin

Fassbender & Rausch - Charlottenstraße 60, 10117 Berlin

Galeria kaufhof - Alexanderplatz 9, 10178 Berlin

This is the Google map situation of each shop:

The shops are a little far away from one to another but I think that drawing the Tiergarten Park will bring closer the places.

I've been thinkig of drawing the front of each shop with the name and put a leyend aside with the address information.

There are the elements for the map. At the begining the idea was to do it using watercolors but finally, because of the deadline and I wanted to experiment a little bit, I drew in paper with ink and painted the elements with digital colors in photoshop. I'm happy with the result. Now I have to put it together on the map!

So here is my map finished. I'm happy with the result, maybe the colors are a bit cold, but I wanted to transmit the atmosphere of winter and snow that we felt my aunt and I when we went to Berlin. (We are from the Canary Islands, always spring weather!!!) I think it's not finish at all, I always want to retouch but I have to say Stop to myself! :)
